Review of Uncorrected Digital Galley

Life has been difficult for Milan Swanz, but this night an offer of a ride home turns into something much more malevolent and soon he finds himself chained to a stake.

And then the unthinkable happens. Milan Swanz is burned alive.

Officers Chuck Skidmore and Mona Kurtz hear Swanz’s tortured scream, but they are too late to save the man. Painters Mill Police Chief Kate Burkholder is called to the scene where there are few clues and no answers.

Why was Milan Swanz burned alive? And who is responsible for the heinous crime?

=========

Sixteenth in the Kate Burkholder series, this story delves into the little-known early Amish history to reveal a dark and troubling legacy. Pulling readers into the telling of the tale from the outset, the unfolding story is one of mystery and suspense. With all the expected characters in place, readers will find this intriguing tale an exciting addition to the series.

The brutality of the crime sets the stage for a complex and compelling plot that finds Kate digging into Amish history. Relentless in her pursuit of the truth, she soon finds herself in danger and readers will find themselves turning pages as fast as possible to discover what comes next.

One of the highlights of the Burkholder stories is the relationships between the characters and the cohesiveness of the officers in the department. Readers of the series as well as those who enjoy police procedurals will find much to appreciate in this captivating tale.

Highly recommended.

Thank you NetGalley and St Martin's Press/Minotaur Books for providing this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

I had no idea when I chose to read this book that it was knee deep into a series I haven’t read. I guess I will see how well I can follow. If there were less than 13 books before this I would have read them! From other reviews it seems this book can be a standalone novel.

I did find this novel to present enough information that it can stand alone. It centers on Chief Police Kate Burkholder of Painters Mill, Ohio. She is asked by town elders in Belleville, Pennsylvania's where Kate was raised to look into the case. She lived in the Kishacoquillas Valley of Amish Country until she was 18 years-old. She is asked to help find the killer of Amish bishop, Ananias Stoltzfus, a dark, complex man who was brutally killed. Although this occurred in another state when she is told the main suspect is Kate's first love, Jonas Bowman she knows she needs to be involved even though she hasn't seen him since she left. Due to conflict of interest, Kate is asked to step back but when she is threatened she thinks that she might be closer to this case than she realized.

It is filled with suspense with reflections to the past and present secrets. I can imagine the previous books must add to the backdrop of the characters development and history.

I received this book from Goodreads First Reads in exchange for an honest review here and on my blog Samwise Reviews, and I was really impressed. I have not read the rest of the series but I felt this did great as a standalone. The book started with a lot of excitement and then it built up towards the finale very well. Kate seems like a really well put together character and I look forward to picking up the previous books in this series to learn more of her back story. Also, being set among the Amish community was a refreshing change of pace from the other mysteries and thrillers I have read lately.… (mais)
