Just One Look is an incredibly refreshing look at the toll relationships can take on people. And, more importantly, the resiliency of the human heart.

Covering the years from 1965 to 1979, the author deftly weaves into the story the tsunami like waves that shook America during those years. From the assassinations of JFK, MLK and Bobby Kennedy to the tragedy of the Vietnam war, her characters live and die in realistic situations.

Even hot dogs, apple pie and baseball appear in the background of the growing pains Dani, John, and their families experience on the road to maturity.

I don't want to give away any of the plot, everything is crucial to the unfolding of this book. This is definitely much more than just a "beach read" as it states in the reviews. It is a must read for anyone examining their own lives.

Thank you to the author for her book that I won on Tattered Pages Book Club (FB).

The book starts in 1984 (the present) and then goes back and forth to Jane's childhood in Odessa, TX. She didn't have the best life that's for sure and moved out when she was 16, away from her drunk mother and her absent father who was always working. She fled to California when she was 16 and lead a crazy life and finally got her act back together living with a vet and his wife and getting her GED and going to college to get her master's in psychology.

It goes through her romantic lives and her drinking but no so much as to bog down the book.

When her mother dies, she goes back "home" for the funeral and to see her father who she didn't want anything to do with after she left. She was always in touch with her older brother Tom, who helped her find her way to the vet and his wife who were like parents to her.

In the end, she takes a "trail of tears" road trip to different places in TX and finds her way back to her husband who she really does love.

Alternating between past and present, this book tells the story of Jane Jennings, her childhood with an alcoholic mother and her current life as a psychology student and wife. The chapters about her childhood were touching and sad and pulled me in. The chapters about her adult life were a little stilted. Jane considers herself to have a large vocabulary and be knowledgeable about psychiatry so these pages are interspersed with big words and psych terms that I suppose help to understand the character but I mostly found distracting.… (mais)

In Sweet Jane, the main character, Jan is coming home for her mother’s funeral – she hasn’t been back since she ran away at 16. The book includes dual time lines to represent Jane finally facing her past and slowly tells the story of her life with a drunken mother that can’t get past the death of Jane’s baby sister and a father that enables his wife and puts his children at risk of her emotional abuse. Jane’s present life look successful, but her demons of the past have put a strain on her marriage. She goes home to confront the past and hopefully finally put it behind her. The novel was compelling in parts but the dialog was stilted and ending was rushed. The author needed to flesh out the characters more, including her husband, Jason.… (mais)
