Sobre mimGrad student in English adolescent lit, stuck in NY, next on the list is Alaska and of course, the UK. Ever since I read that Truffaut tried to read at least a book a day, I thought I could try too. Needless to say grad school and life tend to interfere with that design. I love film, especially American classics and anything French. Am hopelessly obsessed with all things British – their book adaptations, films, tv, music (lately Flogging Molly, Fratellis)

Sobre a minha bibliotecaI tend to favor British authors over American, so there’s quite a lot of British lit of any period. Tons of biographies, film, fantasy, mystery, and poetry (The Romantics will be tackled extensively soon). Lately I’ve been immersed in all these history books, let me not bore you with how truth is more of a stranger than fiction

Lorna Doone? That's a long time ago. I dug out my copy and found that I had bougth it in July 1983 in Hay-on-Wye after a brief stay in wonderful Exmoor, where the book is set. I read it soon afterwards and don't remember a lot about it, only that it was an entertaining read. So, I would just persevere for a bit and it will probably become better soon! Hope you enjoy it.

To my surprise The Hunger Games was a hugely enjoyable read, full of suspense up until the last page. I am not usually into sf or YA, but this one was great. I have already ordered the sequel, which - according to the NYT (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/11/books/...) - is at least as good.
Thanks for adding me to your interesting libraries. I have just returned the favour, since it seems we have quite a few books in common and share a love of British fiction. I hope you get to go to Alaska soon. I visited it in 2005 and fell in love with it rightaway.
Stumbled on your profile via the Barbara Pym Club. Love those photos and love North and South. It's the best! Great library by the way.
Hola! So, how was that cutie Teddy Thompson? I'd heard of him before, but never heard him perform. Any recs? I'll head over to iTunes and get in some trouble! Just sent you a Netflix Friends invite, and I just added Firelight to my queue. I'd never heard of that movie before! And I also added The Best Years of Our Lives. Haven't watched that much of Dana Andrews, either. Looks like that will be remedied soon! Haven't seen Wire in the Blood or Midsomer at all. My parents are watching all of the Midsomers now (they're on Netflix too) so I hear about it every once in a while.

I'll let you know about Mr Perfect in Marple as soon as I watch it. I should be getting it next week some time. Can't wait! And crap, I didn't know they'd cancelled Primeval! I hope they do make a movie out of it, it's totally doable. I know it's kind of cheesy, but it's good. And I'm super excited for new Doctor too! Christopher Eccleston was great, and I thought I'd hate David Tennant, but now I love him. I'm still kind of upset that he's no longer the Doctor, though it will be interesting to see what Matthew does with the character. I've been waiting to see Blackpool for quite awhile (it's been sitting in my Saved section for a long time) - didn't know David was in it! Now I'm even more annoyed that I haven't seen it. And Green Wing is SOOO funny and hilarious. I've been waiting for it to magically appear on Netflix too! I've only seen seasons 1 & 2, and BBC America hasn't shown season 3 yet. Jerks! You'll love it, whenever you see it.

That's it, I'm going to pick Excellent Women for my bookclub next year. So now, my two picks are EW and Carmilla. I tend to pick books primarily based on length. I have a hard time finishing a 350+ page book every month, but that's probably because I'm always reading at least 4 other ones, and I lose track of time. We meet the first Friday of every month, and I have such a hard time keeping track of it! It's been 6 years, and I'm still always rushing to finish the book in time. I don't mind reading long books, but I have a harder time doing it when I feel like I'm being forced. Does that make sense? Cuz it only kind of makes sense to me. We're going to be reading Les Miz over two months, and I'm pretty nervous about reading 600+ pages a month. I'm really trying to finish as many books as possible for my 999 challenge on here, so I have a prayer of finishing both the 999 and the book by the end of the year. Aaaah!

I do like fantasy books, and I've got a red copy of Jonathan Strange that has been starting to talk to me recently! But again, the length is scaring me away a little. I'm going to have to wait til next year to read it. I still have to read 31 books for the 999! Are you doing any of the reading challenges on here? It's great, but it's also making me crazy. I'm a total list person (despite the fact that I am constantly losing the lists I make), and I'm getting so excited and overwhelmed with all of the books that I want to read. Here's the weird thing. Despite the fact that I love most everything British and Jane Austen, I haven't really read that many books that fit into that mode. I think I was always too afraid/nervous to just read what my little heart wanted to read, without trying to broaden my reading horizons. Actually, I just realized that. Hm. So now I should make a concerted effort to only choose books that I truly want to read. Right? Right! At least I picked categories for my 101010 challenge that fit that new rule a little more than this years.

Hm, recommendations for you. Well, one of my favorite novels is The Portrait of a Lady, and I really liked Jude the Obscure, despite the not-super-cheery outlook on life. Oh, I totally Loved Time & Again. And Jane Eyre is another fave. Hmmmm. Well, what kind of a reading mood are you in these days? I was thinking about doing the group read of Briar Rose next year, but just saw that you rated it 3 1/2 stars. Maybe not.

I loved loved loved Men In Trees! James Tupper is one hot man, hey? I'm hoping they release a series DVD soon, I'd totally buy it. It was so cute and smart and funny. I haven't watched Sanctuary or the IT Crowd, but will add them to my Netflix.

Alright, I should get going. I got guilted into having a Lia Sophia jewelry party at my house this Wednesday night, and I have to pick up the paper piles around here. Once I get on LT I tend to lose hours. Ugh.
In the meantime, here's a bit of funny for you
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0mJu0T03...
And a bit of Mr Lovely for you
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F74pqHTR2...
Sigh...
Have to say, I kind of hate your guts for referring me to youtube to watch MI-5. Once Mr. Hot Stuff was onscreen, I couldn't tear myself away! I'll have to get back to finishing season 7 in the next couple of weeks...going to try and watch only 1 episode a day. Yes, I'm on Netflix...my "name" on there is LL 1319881. I'm pretty much always at the max of 500 on my queue, and I have a word document on my desktop to update as space becomes available. Sad, I know. But necessary. I love Netflix! If not for them, I don't know how in the world I'd watch all of the British stuff I love! I've thought about buying a zone 2 DVD player, or whatever they're called, just so I can watch BBC stuff sooner! BTW, I think it's hilarious and awesome that you added Gene Tierney's autobiography since I just put in on my "to be read soon" shelf. I love her! The very first black and white movie my parents let me stay up late to watch was "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir". I've loved her ever since then. And, then of course I love "Laura", and not only because it's my name!

That totally gorgeous boy in your class must be chatted up! Do it! How can you pass him by? I have to say, I'd be so nervous that I'd probably just ramble for awhile like a Nervous Nelly, I don't really act normally around gorgeous guys. He sounds PERFECT! I mean, he's probably either gay or taken (isn't that always the case?) but it can't hurt to find out! What if he is British? OMFG, you'd have to marry him instantly! Oh, the sacrifices.... Does he kind of look like Matthew MacFadyen? Cute Boy sounds like a cross between him and Richard.

As for TV shows, I've seen lots of Inspector Lewis, Poirot, Miss Marple (from the 80s/90s, but did you know that Richard Armitage was in one of the new ones? I have it in my Queue, will have to look it up and report back...anyway), Inspector Lynley, The Vicar (obvs), As Time Goes By, Keeping Up Appearances, Are You Being Served?, A Fine Romance (you're right, so quirky and great), The Last of the Summer Wine, Robin Hood, Green Wing, Primeval, Skins, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Mistresses, Coupling .... brain is going dead. I've only seen a few bits and pieces of Doc Martin and All Creatures, though my Mom loves them both. (I think I inherited my Anglophilia from her a bit...she's the only person I can talk to about BBC stuff, though not really cute boys. Awkward.) Also seen a couple Monarch of the Glen and Ballykissangel, but that's kind of it. Yes, please raid my Netflix and rec away!

As far as books go, I'll read just about anything. Jane Austen and Henry James are some of my faves, but I'm up for anything and everything. A friend of mine (ReneeMarie here on LT) recommended Barbara Pym to me, specifically Crampton Hodnet and I just got The Enchanted April through PBS. I'd like to read more books like that and like...well...anything that would make a great British movie! BTW, I'm excited to see Bright Star too, though I think I'm going to have to either see it by myself in the theater or wait for the DVD.

I do watch a fair bit of American TV, though none of that Reality shite. I love House (and have a decent-sized crush on Hugh Laurie, though how can you not), The Office, Fringe, Castle (b/c of Nathan Fillion), Glee, 30 Rock and a few others that I've watched for so long I just have to keep watching them, you know? I also loved Northern Exposure! My Uncle lives in Alaska, and anything to do with the state, my parents and I are all over. I was also all about My So Called Life. It was so me when I was in high school. I'm just finishing watching the last disc now from Netflix, and while I tend to also see it more from the parental point of view, the magic is still there. I think I love it even more! And Brian Krakow, and Rickie, and Jordan Catalano. What a great name, hey? Reminds me of Jake Ryan, one of my first celebrity husbands. Sigh....

Eeek! It's 11pm! I need to start winding down (like you, British stuff gets me all wound up!) and get to bed so I'm fairly awake at work tomorrow. I think my clients would appreciate it!

Wishing you sweet British Boy dreams....

Laura
Um, hell YES I am Anglophile! Been one my entire life! Glad to find another like-minded soul here at LT. I am also in love with the Vicar of Dibley. I even held off on watching the last DVD (with Mr. Armitage) until I knew I wouldn't be interrupted by anyone stopping by my house so I could drool over his wonderfulness by myself and not feel like an idiot. I kid you not, but when they showed his place, and there were PILES of boxes of books, I instantly started drooling. Could that be any more perfect? And him being all cute and smart with his sweater on? Don't think so. Oh, and when he opens the door and has those wire-rimmed glasses on? YUM!

I know, most of my friends know that I love anything British, and when I start talking about a TV show, or a joke, or if they happen to come over and I'm watching BBC America (which is pretty much most of the time) and laughing, they have no idea who anyone is, can't understand what they're saying, and don't always think it's funny. (Remind me again why they're my friends?!? Just kidding, obvs.) I used to have a big crush on Alistair whats-his-face, who used to host Cash in the Attic, and I'd get teased endlessly. "Alistair? Could he have a more British name?" Don't care! And I love David Tennant, and Jonas Armstrong, and the boys on Torchwood (except for Burn Gorham - I'm sure he's a great guy, but his whole mouth situation scares me), and oh soooo many others! I told my friends that I had a celebrity crush on Nathan Fillion and they were sincerely shocked that he was not from anywhere in the UK! So much so that they kept talking about it for weeks! (Hm, maybe this means I have a problem. And if I do, I am totally fine with that!)

So, do you have any recommendations for me to watch and/or read? I'm always looking for new ways to get my next UK fix! I've seen most Jane Austen movie adaptations, all of the Robin Hoods, all Vicar/Rosemary & Thyme/Poirot. Oh, and I can't believe you haven't seen any Robin Hood! It's sooo great! Kind of cheesy, with some funny moments, and Richard is dead sexy, very bad boy with a heart. And Jonas is certainly not hard to handle either. Both of them are so cute with Marian, it breaks my heart! Kind of in the same way Edward / Jacob break my heart too. By the way, when does Richard start MI-5? I missed it starting with season 3, but I'm watching some episodes right at this very moment that were on BBC today while I was at work. I keep hoping he'll pop up soon!

Enough British gushing for the moment! Hope you're having a good Monday!
Hiya - Clicked through to your profile (saw on the home page that you added Dear Fatty to your library and I LOOOOVE Dawn French) and I have to say that I squealed out loud when I saw your pics of North & South and Richard Armitage! Hellooooo, Gorgeous! Love your Doctor Who profile pic too - is that Miss Hartigan?

Happy Reading,
Laura
Thank you for the comment on my profile pic!
I am going to add your library to my favourite ones, so I will have time to browse through your shelves.
:-))
Noticed you liked Breath, Eyes, Memory, and I was wondering if you'd be interested in reviewing my new novel and posting your comments here as well as a few other book-related sites. Thought you might like my novel since it's also about a young girl struggling to grow up in a violent atmosphere. I could e-mail you the novel in an e-book format if you'd like (I'm currently out of physical copies). If you're interested, send me your e-mail address (mine is mail@christophertusa.com), and I'll send you the e-book. Here's a link to a summary (and a sample chapter) in case you'd like to read more about the book before you commit:

Thanks,

Oh my gosh, another lover of North and South, oh my life is complete!! I LOVE that miniseries. It solidly knocked Pride and Prejudice out as my favorite adaptation. BBC should be very proud of themselves for this totally brilliant work. Have you read the book?

LOL on the book buying, believe me, I can totally understand. I went into Barnes and Noble the other day to buy one book and ended up with three books and a journal(and I don't even journal). I have decided that I need to marry rich to fuel my book buying habits :)

Hope your having a lovely vacation.
Trish
Hi there Christine,
Thanks for adding me to your interesting libraries. I am always honored when anyone thinks what I read is interesting.

Patricia

PS: Love that picture of the lady in green.
Didnt really like the ten year old. Loved the kid though. So frickin talented.
Hey! I do like the show True Blood, I've watched all of season 1, and I agree with you about the naughty parts of the show - most of the time it's just not necessary, but this is HBO we're talking about; I don't think they know how to make a show without sex. Anyways, besides all that, the show is pretty good. It differs somewhat from the books - Tara's life is examined more closely, as well as Jason's, and the finale will have you scratching your head :)
I have not read the Dresden Files, what are they about?

And His Dark Materials is an amazing series, I could not put those books down! Well, I'm off to read...
Thanks for adding me to your interesting libraries! We have a lot of books in common, a lot that are some of my favorites! I noticed you liked Atonement...I love that book so much. Also, I saw you have the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris. Have you read them? I am quite addicted to them.
I did not know about that Jane Austen "film", thank you! Haha that was hilarious. I suppose the timelessness of Jane Austen inspires people to do with it whatever they will and adapt it in silly ways? Hahaha. I've never seen "Being Human"... I will have to check that out so thank you for that as well!
:D

Lets keep an eye out for other musicians...I would love to go there, its looks cool. Cant wait to hear all about it :)

I made $30 yesterday woohoo! lol
I totally forgot about having to file to graduation lol

Ill do it today, maybe...?

And we DID have that conversation about her, I remember telling you that the FU song was great, I even sang it lol

You never listen to me, I want a divorce!
PS You like Jane Austen, as do I naturally... are you planning to read the Pride and Prejudice plus zombies novel? I already have it preordered, hehe.
You seem brilliant (in both the American and the British sense of the word). Just want to say that. I have only put up 100 books, and here you share over half. I am a Brit Lit student as well. You also love geeky sci fi like the Dresden Files and Doctor Who. You're amazing.
LOL! The last video you sent was about us! I was laughing so hard my stomach hurt!
WHEN??? LOL

I just awoke and your comment totally made me spill my coffee from laughing.

Im so sore. Ugh. I had this dream last night that I was like Harry Potter and had a magic and and was sent on a mission to get out of a cave in under one hour while battling obstacles. I had to fight toilet monsters and clog the toilets to flood the place while helping a giant fat sluglike man out of a pothole he was jammed into.

::sighs:: I wish I lived in a book.
This poem is...for us.

Lies Lies Lies

She sits in front of me,
With coffee in hand
And speaks of intricate things.
She laughs and smiles
And calls me 'sweetheart'
And I sit unsuspecting that,
She wont call me at all.

Lies Lies Lies

And he,
He sits and watches her speak
And offers words she devours.
The same words hes said a dozen times
Because he is as intricate as a snake in summer
When the trees can mask even the brightest liars.
No, he says he'll give her more
And she sits unsuspecting that,
He wont give here anything at all.

Lies Lies Lies
