Sobre mimI am a Swedish booklover and bibliophile.
Sobre a minha bibliotecaI have been collecting books all my life and have about 3600 books in my library. My favourite subjects are thrillers, mysteries and history. I prefer signed first editions.
I have finally decided (October 2008) to follow the example of The British Library and several members of LT and register my DVD´s and CD´s as well.
I want to use LT as a record of my library in terms of what I really own.
All the items to be seen here are physically part of my collection and owned by me.

thank you for your message. Sorry for the delay in replying. I am just getting used to using LibraryThing. Yes, I have looked through your library and find it very interesting. By now we have 16 books in common, but I think that number will increase as I still have a lot more books to add. Unfortunately I have a habit of buying a lot more books than I read so I am trying to rectify this and read more and buy less. But the temptation is always there to buy buy buy!! haha.
You have a superb collection of crime writers and thrillers. Where do you get the time to read them all? I see that you have several of Ken Bruen's books. He is one of my favourite authors. I love his Jack Taylor books, and have them all. I am planning on reading them all again in the coming months.
Yeah, I am happy to say that Ireland has quite a lot of very good authors, and thankfully we are now producing a lot of very good crime and thriller writers also, which is a pleasant change as before many Irish writers wrote what were good books, but were often very depressing or serious.
You mentioned Ian Rankin. I have the first of his books but have not read it yet. Is he good?
As for Swedish writers, I have 2 of Stieg Larsson's books. I have read the first one, and it was brilliant. I also have the first Kurt Wallander book by Henning Mankell (it is called Faceless Killers in English). I work in the public libraries here in Dublin, and I have really noticed how popular Swedish and other Scandinavian writers have become in recent years, especially crime writers such as the ones you mentioned: Hakan Nesser and Jo Nesbo. Also there is an Icelandic author Arnaldur Indriðason, and others such as Karin Fossum. I notice that you do not seem to have any books by Daniel Silva. I would definitely recommend his books to you. He is a brilliant writer.
I would love to be able to speak Swedish. I think it is a lovely language, and I do have a Swedish dictionary and some language courses, but I have not got around to starting them yet. It sounds a lovely language to listen to. What part of Sweden are you from?
I am from a small village called Crookhaven on the Mizen peninsula (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mizen_Head) in Cork myself, but am currently living in Dublin.
So I hope you are well, and look forward to discussing books recommendations with you in the future.
Kind regards,
Tim

Good to hear from you again. Thanks for the Bellairs list which seems to be complete and correct as far as I can tell. The remaining titles, as you quite rightly say,are getting very expensive. I see that you have found a couple recently and I am on the track of yet another one. I don't know if the remainder will ever pop up,we shall just have to wait and see.
At the moment I am in the process of entering my collection of DVD's - a long and rather tedious process,as I'm having to find most of the covers on Google image, and enter the whole thing manually.
I'm also weeding out some books which I don't need any more,so that is giving me a bit more essential space. Thus with DVD's in and unwanted books out,the total library is a bit like a see-saw at the moment. No doubt it will settle down soon.
Best wishes.

I have today acquired a copy of 'Crime in Leper's Hollow' complete with dust jacket. This leaves me with a duplicate copy without a dust jacket, which I bought via ABE some time ago. I see that you do not seem to have this particular title of Bellairs yet. If you are interested in my copy, then the ABE description reads '1961 hardcover (albeit I can see no date) blue boards, spine sunned, pages lightly tones,a good firm copy,no d/j' which seems a fair description to me. I paid £5 plus postage and packing, and that would be the same to you if you are interested.
We can sort out the details if you want to go further. I won't of course mind if you do not want to go any further, but thought I would give you the chance.
All the best.

Great to hear from you again.
Yes I'm pleased to have reached 11,000+books,albeit I seem to be slipping down the list at the moment, due to a number of members entering stuff that they don't in fact own. Hopefully that may change when the long-awaited Collections feature finally arrives.
The Bellairs titles that I still want seem to be either completely unavailable or way out of my price range. I may find the odd one or two - who knows - I will keep you posted on that one.
Of my recent reading I would say the best have been 'The Shape Shifter' by Tony Hillerman and 'The Blackpool Highflyer' by Edward Martin.
Although I have all of the C.J.Sansom books I have been unable to meet him so far and get a signed copy,as I am told his health is not good and he does not appear very often. No doubt this is why the signed copies are so sought after.
I will look out also for a Stuart McBride, who is a new one on me. Thanks for the suggestion.
Summer has indeed arrived and temperatures are about the same here as in Sweden. In fact I checked what it was in my garden shed this morning, and it read 100C. I made a quick exit I can tell you.
Best wishes and keep up the good work (Bellairs wise)

I received the Bellairs book from Powell's yesterday. It looks good and I've moved it to the top of my -to read- stack.
Sorry that I didn't convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius. I should have thought of that. I looked Dalecarlia up on the computer. It's a complete contrast to where I live. I also found some pictures, very beautiful.
My youngest daughter is engaged and has decided to move back home to save money -so- I'm losing one of my book rooms.
I meant to tell you that one of our television stations is running the "Wallender" series by Henning Mankell. I've only seen two of them and I wasn't sure if I was going to like them as they seemed pretty bleak, but after the second one it's starting to grow on me. I don't know how well the series follow the books but I wanted to ask if you have read any and what you thought of them.
My husband sends his regards and has suggested that I find something other than his painting to supervise -so- more time to read.
I'll let you know how I like the Bellairs book.
My best to you and your wife,
Debbie

Sorry for the delay in responding. We are painting the outside of our house. To be honest I should say that my husband is painting and I'm supervising.
I have ordered George Bellairs book " Fear Round about". Have you read that one yet? I've just received " Butchers and Other Stories of Crime" by Peter Lovesey. I read his Sergeant Cribb series years ago and enjoyed them.
I do envy you being able to hold onto your books from your boyhood. I lived abroad from my teens to my early twenties and a number of my books were lost in shipping.
To answer your question about our weather, I've had to have my air conditioner on for awhile now as our weather is very changeable and spring doesn't last long. Our summers are long and very hot with temperatures ranging from the high 90's to over 100 degrees. Today it's in the low 80's and a beautiful day but they are forecasting in the 90's next week.
Is Sweden anything like Norway? My parents lived there for a couple of years and liked it. I'm sorry to say I don't really know anything about Sweden. What is your area like and do your summers get very warm?
Right now I'm reading a biography and listening to " The Beekeepers Apprentice" on audio.
You might check out Powells Books at powells.com. I bought the Bellairs book from them and noticed that they sell signed 1st editions.
Best Wishes,
Debbie

I checked out the links you suggested. Very helpful and much appreciated. VJ Books looks really interesting and I will be keep my eye on it.
I've never bought books on Ebay, I probably should check that out. I do buy from amazon marketplace sellers. I also use Bookfinder.com, Abebooks, Alibris and Strandbooks.com. We have a wonderful book store here called Half Price Books and I have bought a number of hard to find books there.
I envy you your signed first editions. I don't own very many myself as I have to budget my book buying.
Do you have a library or are you like me and have books all over the house? I do have two rooms set up for my books but they won't hold them all and I'm always in need of more bookshelves.
Right now I'm reading a book by Kate Summerscale called " The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher" and I can't say that I'm enjoying it. Have you read it? I don't like to give up on books but I may on this one. I'm not sure what will be next as my "to be read" stack is rather large.
Best Wishes,
Debbie

It was good to hear from you and I appreciate the recommendations. The books by George Bellairs look good and I have added some to my wish list. I haven't checked out any by Brian McGilloway yet, but I intend to.
I guess you could call me an Anglophile also, not only do I love their mysteries but I'm a huge fan of their history.
Have you ever read Margery Allingham? She is usually grouped with Christie, Sayers and Marsh. I also like Minette Walters and really enjoyed her book the "Sculptress". There's the Nero Wolfe books by Rex Stout. I read a number of them years ago and plan to add them to my audiobooks soon. Right now I'm listening to " The Twelve Caesars" by Suetonius and finished reading "The 6th Lamentation".
Best Wishes,
Debbie

Sorry it's taken me so long to answer you, been quite hectic here.
Thank you for the recommendation of C. J. Sansom. After looking at Amazon I've added the first book to my wish list.
I've noticed you have quite a collection of Inspector Morse DVD's. They happen to be some of my favorites along with the "Wire in the Blood" series. I've not read the books yet but Colin Dexter is in my tbr list.
I usually have more than one book going at a time and my mood seems to dictate what comes next. I belong to Audible and download books to my ipod (the eyes aren't what they used to be} and I have to say I'm really enjoying listening to some of my books. This, however, will never replace the pleasure I get from being with, looking at, and savoring the feel of a book.
Best Wishes,
Debbie

Thank you for adding me to your "interesting libraries" list. I'm always glad when someone finds something they might like.

Hope that you are well and that the books continue to flow into your home. You are still adding our old friend George Bellairs to your library I am pleased to see. Between HorusE and us we shall soon see him in print again. Now that really would be something wouldn't it ?
I don't know if you read any Fantasy, but I am in the course of reading a series of books by a chap called Walter Moers who,for something different is rather good. The best of them is one called "The City of Dreaming Books" (you can see why I like this methinks) The are all set in a weird country called Zamonia in which live many extraordinary creatures. (see the many reviews on LT) I am finding them great fun to read and they have in addition many illustrations and maps which are all drawn by the author.
I generally keep an eye on your latest entered books as I find that we have many of the same books (or type of books) in common. The more we seem to enter the more true that seems to be.I even see that you have just put in 'The Histories' by Herodotus a book that I have had in my collection for some time too.
Speak to you again soon.
Best wishes.

Sure, I like books and literary topics. As you can see I really like anything British -- maybe an Anglophile, who knows? Of course I really, really like Jane Austen and other authors such as Colin Dexter. I don't have his books but I do have all of the Inspector Morse DVD's which are based on his books.
I am in process of cataloging all of my modest DVD collection, such as, Foyle's War, A Touch of Frost, Rosemary and Thyme, Midsomer Murders etc. I believe the New York Library also catalogues their DVD collections. So, I'm using them as my guide. Therefore my catalogue will include books & DVD's that are owned by me. I don't add wish books to my listing -- only those that I am keeping.
My main interests are American History, English Mystery, Romance - Christian, the Classics.

How is the reading going there in Sweden and have you been adding much to your ever-growing collection ?
Things are a bit quiet here,as there hasn't been all that much published recently that interests me overmuch.I don't know about Sweden, but in the UK ,as soon as we get near to Christmas (say about the end of October) all sensible book activity comes to a halt. We seem to get an over-abundance of (so-called) 'Celebrity' type books which are of no interest at all or 'Coffee- table' type books, ditto. Somebody (I forget just who) once termed this type of book as 'Things in Books Clothing'. I think that fits the bill just right.
Anyway the main purpose of this is to thank you for you conversations this year and to look forward to more stimulating ones in 2009.
Both my wife and I would like to send you our best wishes for Christmas and the coming year.

Thanks for the message.
I felt that I had to reply straight back and ask if you would put your bookseller right regarding P.D.James. She is in fact very far from 'frail',and she happily signed and dated books for an audience of well over 100 fans at the event that I told you about. The only thing she said that she was unable to do was to add dedications to the books,as that would take all night.
I did notice the four books that we share, but now make that five as I've now entered another George Bellairs,"An Old Man Dies'.We do seem to have a very similar taste in books don't we.
Speak to you soon.

I've just returned from a talk and signing at my favorite shop, Heffers of Cambridge. Here my wife and I met P.D.James,who I see is one of your rated authors.
She gave a most interesting talk followed by the signing of her latest book,"The Private Patient". I have just completed reading this and I must say that I thought it one of her best for some time. Didn't much care for her last one "The Lighthouse".Considering that she is now in her 80's,she is really with it.A great lady and in my opinion the present Queen of Crime Fiction.
Have also been to various other signings, which if you are interested, the details of which I discuss with bookstothesky and HorusE.
Have you been to any signings in Sweden recently ? and if so I would like to hear about them.
All the best.

Mycket svenskt.
God läshöst! häls EvaCarina

I'm delighted to hear that you have got a copy of a George Bellairs title. As yet I haven't come across "An Old Man Dies",but I do hope you enjoy it anyway. They are completely unassuming stories, which I suppose could be described as 'cosies' but I really like them, not least for the fact that a lot of them,as I think I've said before, are set on the Isle of Man .Added to which the poor chap hasn't got many followers on LT,so please spread the word if you can.Of course if you don't like the book/author,you are welcome to castigate me for the recommendation.
I look forward to your report.
Thanks also for the link, which is useful. Most of my copies have been found on ABE,although a few have been found in secondhand and charity shops.

I have to make this quick as my wife's due back from grocery shopping in a few minutes and I've been taking too long responding to HorusE and Devenish here on LT. I will write back more comprehensively in the near future.
First, thank you for the female author suggestions. I had never heard of either of the ladies mentioned and I look forward to investigating their writings.
Second, I wanted to give you, Horus and Devenish this link (from my friend jackanaples here on LT) to some foreign mystery authors in the hope you'll find something of interest: http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entert...
I've got to go now, but I'll talk more later after investigating your recommendations.
Take care,

I have just read Bookstothesky's last comment on your page, and am delighted that you are in contact with him.We have had many interesting conversations in the past, and I must say that I have learnt quite a lot from him,not least about fantasy fiction, which I am rather lacking in knowledge I must admit. That of course is one of the great strengths of LT,putting one in touch with those who know more than oneself.
I am also very interested in Scandinavian crime authors,so if you can think of any more (in addition to those you have already mentioned)please do let me know.
That said,I have to agree with you on English authors, perhaps as you would expect me to.I am especially drawn to those of the Golden Age,but in addition to the well known names I tend to collect and read some of the perhaps less favored today. I mean such names as Peter Cheyney,Edgar Wallace and no doubt the most obscure of all George Bellairs . This last chap set a lot of his many books on the Isle of Man,and they all featured his detective Chief Inspector Littlejohn and his assistant Cromwell.
All the best and hope to hear from you soon.

Sorry I took so long to get back to you. Your message of interest in my library came along roughly at the same time as a couple of others (one of those unexplained cosmic convergences, I guess:) and, as the others' libraries weren't as comprehensive as yours or quite as interesting to me because of my recent interest in Nordic crime writing, I figured I would just respond to them quickly and then savor your library later; kind of a delayed gratification type of thing. Unfortunately, life/work came along and intruded at various levels, and other messages got posted, pushing yours down, and I forgot about you for a bit; again, I apologize, and I thank you for finding my library to be of interest.
I'm truly envious of your ability to read both English and Swedish, as there are only a smattering of crime novels translated into English so far from your country and your neighbor countries (not counting Mankell, whom I've yet to read, strangely). I read the first novel by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö a few months ago (like it a lot) and I've purchased a couple more since then. I also read the first Hakan Nesser book but, though the ending was interesting and satisfying, I didn't really enjoy the main policeman character (his name escapes me at the moment). I do like Mr. Nesser, though. I spoke with him for a few minutes at a book fair here in Los Angeles a little more than a year ago and found him to be humorous and pleasant. Of late, I've been eyeing Stieg Larsson's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and I plan to give it a read soon (if I can ever get through Michael Stanley's A Carrion Death, like I promised Devenish:). Probably my current favorite Scandinavian author would be Norway's Jo Nesbo and I sure wish they'd hurry up with the translations of his books.
It looks like we share a friend in Devenish and that we are all on the same wavelength when it comes to book ownership on LT, along with a few others, of course. It would be nice if Tim, et al., would get the their collective acts together and overhall the site to break out other ownership categories like they promised two years ago (yes, it's been that long), but what can you do?
Anyway, enough of that negative LT stuff. It looks like you and Devenish and I also share a passion for book signings. Are there a lot of author tours and signings at bookstores in Sweden? If so, are you able to attend any of them or do you get your signed books through the internet?
Speak with you soon,
bookstothesky

It's great to hear from you again. In answer to your question about how I manage to store my collection, the answer is 'with great difficulty.' Now,let me try to give you a proper answer. Most are kept in an extension to the house. That was built a few years ago,and the idea was to clear the rest of the house and to leave it completely free of books. That idea lasted just a few months before they started to spread once more, until they now inhabit every room again. Some are double-stacked and some are simply stacked. Included in the total (as you will see on my Profile Page) are about 300-400 CD's and Audio tapes and they are much easier to store. I have however not listed DVD's.
I'm pleased that you agree with me as to only cataloguing items actually owned.I really do think that the only fault with LT is the way that they count non-owned items as part of the over-all totals. Fine with me if people want to include whatever they like, but as I say these things (or rather non-things) should not counted. If you want to read more on this subject, you might like to have a look at Bookstothesky's profile page. He gives some further interesting insights (I think) into this subject.
I see that we now share 453 books,my goodness, that has jumped up a lot.
Best wishes

Har du läst Rebu's Scotland: A personal jurney? Vet du om den går att få tag på?

Hope this helps. Thanks for your list which is helpful.

I see that you have sent a request through to connect with me as a 'friend',and this of course I am delighted to do.I see that not only do we share 195 books to date, but that most of the authors on your favourite list also feature strongly in my library. In the case of Stephen Booth,Colin Dexter and P.D.James,I am lucky enough to have met them and to own signed copies of several of their books. I see in fact that you prefer signed first editions, and I have collected a fair few of these, mostly on the crime fiction front.
Anyway I am pleased that you contacted me,and I hope to hear from you soon.
All the best from the UK.
