So stop by and star it and stop by my 50 Book Challenge and say hi. I finished "The Eyre Affair" today and it was a lot of fun! A blend of mystery & fantasy, with classic books, as a major plot line! It probably qualifies as lighter fare but I will continue to read the series. Hope you are having a great weekend!

Lucky you - not only did you get some lovely shelves, it sounds like you didn't have to put them together! Actually the hardest part for us was getting the box up the stairs to the second floor. We quickly decided the best thing to do was open the box and take it up piece by piece. Oh the thigs we do for our books! :)

Hi - Sounds like we have the exact same bookshelf! We happened upon it in Costco and took the last one they had. We'd look for another if we could figure out where to put it. It really is a lovely piece for put together furniture.

Thanks, I appreciate that. It’s interesting to see how different people take away different things from books. You know what else? A few weeks ago I listened to his audiobook of When You Are Engulfed in Flames, and I liked the sections recorded in a studio much better than I did the bits he recorded in front of a live audience. He’d pause for a laugh and that wrecked the flow for me.

I don’t think I’d call him obnoxious, but I’m one of those who thinks he’s going to be read 100 years from now. I do think that DS thinks he was obnoxious when he was a kid, and that comes across in his stories. The one where he stuffs all his Halloween candy in his mouth so he doesn’t have to share any with a neighbor’s kid is a case in point.

I’ve read where some critics think he’s going to be our next Twain, but I think he’s this generation’s J.D. Salinger. His sister Amy Sedaris is also funny as hell, I asked for a copy of her book on entertaining, I Like You, for Christmas.

hey, sorry about the very long delay in replying to your comment. I see that you did accept that copy of "tunneling to the center of the earth," and in my opinion, it was a wise choice. Over the past few years, I've become a devotee of the short story form, and I'm really enjoying what a lot of contemporary writers are doing with their short story collections. I don't know what you thought about the book, but I flipped for Kevin Wilson's writing, his play with the surreal amidst the banal, the way he divulges novelty quirks about characters, only to render said quirks beside the point. I think his language is evocative, if a bit devoid of the sensory (I have to agree with the NYTimes Book Review on this), but he makes up for it with a startling sense of the present. I reminded me a lot of Miranda July's short story collection, but, with respects to July's book, a bit better, a bit sturdier.

Unfortunately I have not read it yet. Until you messaged me I totally forgot I even had it. I picked it from the review stack because the synopsis on the back reminded me so much of the old Twilight Zone episodes I used to watch in black and white as a kid. I looked very briefly at some of the writing and nothing stood out as either outstanding or particularly egregious, so I figured the chances were good that I would enjoy it. I say what the hell, give it a try :-)

Thanks again, I've mooched the books. And there's no need to refund a point--I seem to have plenty of points, probably because I have quite a few listed (I also sell used books online, so I list ones that aren't worth much on BookMooch--though it's all a matter of opinion, isn't it?). So no worries.

I just noticed your listing and review of Four Queens--that sounds like one I'd enjoy. I'll have to add it to my list--the mountain of books to be read is very, very high.

I'm reading a very good historical fiction right now - an ARC of Blindspot by Jane Kamensky and Jill Lepore. It takes place in 1764 in Boston and is about a Scottish painter outrunning his creditors and a woman who is estranged from her family and passing as a young boy as the painter's apprentice. I'm really enjoying it.

I see you went and got a copy of "Novel History". I stumbled on it when I was looking up another book about writers and writing and ended up starting it immediately. Have you had a chance to look through it? I read the articles on books I'd already read first and then the others. I've added to my TBR as a result.

What was especially interesting was that different historians have different takes on the value of historical fiction.

Hi! No, I haven't read it yet, but it's on my list for my ARC Challenge this year. I think it sounds very interesting and it's not a large novel. It's not a topic that I've read much about. I wish I could better help you decide. :) I got mine out of the blue, so I didn't have to make a decision beforehand.

I have finally read The Scarlet Pimpernel. The prose was occasionally over-wrought, but I'd expect that for the time it was written. The story was wonderful. There are quite a few more books about The Scarlet Pimpernel. I might have to check them out.

Hey. I use the "that IS a bargain" tag for any book that I either got for free (which is why it's on all the ARCs in my library) or got for far less than the printed price (for library sale books or ones I get off the bargain table at a book store). It is more of a note to myself so I stay within my book budget than a comment on the quality of the books.

See the conversation with Tim Spalding starting at message 34 for further information). I'm still planning on upgrading the account to paid, since I think LibraryThing deserves the money even if the project is killed. Lifetime memberships start at $19 and end at $55. I was planning on being "typical" and give $25 (which is what is automatically selected). Thanks for sending me to the blog on Darfur. I'd like your opinion on the Darfur book you will be reviewing (Tears for Darfur? I read so many titles on the blog, I can't remember the one you are doing.)

I am in the process of setting up a blog--since this is new to me my son is helping me. I'm in California and he lives in Buffalo Grove, IL, so it's taking time to get me trained. I have several posts up but I haven't learned to make links yet. As soon as I do I will review The Translator (not quite finished with it yet, almost) and put it on the blog. I feel like she did--in May when I got the list of lectures for 2008-2009 season I had to look up Darfur to even see where it was--this really has been happening beneath the radar and I am appalled! This is why I'm anxious to be well prepared for the lecture. I'll have some tough questions to ask! I appreaciate you info.

Hi - I'll second Talbin's thanks! I read The Kite Runner a couple years back, and while I recall much of the plot and the basics of that scene, I don't remember how graphic it was - clearly not enough to strike me as "too much." (Note to self: skim through my copy of The Kite Runner.) Thanks again for letting me know, that would have driven me nuts!

I had been thinking about it and trying to figure out the best way to post the 12 steps on my blog (as a regular post or on the side bar, or what?), which is why I hadn't put it on there already. I decided to do it as a regular post, because my sidebar is so skinny (and I only have one - for some reason my template won't accomodate two bars). Anyway, I've now posted it here. If you want to link to it or put it on your blog, that's fine with me (and feel free to tweak it or change anything you don't like).

I am trying to be careful of ARCs. For a while there i had so many I had no time for the
books I really wanted to read. Interesting about the necklace....wonder why we got it ?
I have no memory of requesting it either.
I just finished First Daughter... did not enjoy it nearly as much as I had hoped.
oh well.. such is life.

I just got The Necklace from Random house. No idea why, but I will have to read and review it.

Did you get anything in July? I have fire. I think its slightly better than The Eight, as far as having TOO much
of too many people and things. Especially in the past. All in all okay read, but reads that will go to mooch.

Actually, *blush*, I had listed my ARCs to see how many people had wishlisted it. When I did it, I thought I was just going to burn through them... toast 'em and post 'em... but it hasn't worked out that way. I'm slowing down badly. I can only hope that I'll speed up again when school starts back up again. :-D

Hooray! Glad you liked it. (was the pool in Mexico for your honeymoon?) And, what an exotic setting to read it in! I wrote that I was going to start it after Shades of Glory, but then I started getting ARCs like crazy, thanks to you, I think.

So I'm working through ARCs and bookclub books now - just finished Stealing Athena which I thought was excellent, and will start One More Year this evening. Plus, for bookclub I've got Born on a Blue Day. Oh, and am reading ARC the Power Makers.

I've read the first two Willig books and have the third. I found that after reading two in quick succession that I was just not in an appreciate enough mood for the third.

Have you checked out the group devoted to the Scarlet Pimpernel?

Oh, cheers! Actually, I would love to know how the genesis of Alive in Necropolis came about. Did the story come to him fully formed, or did he sit down to write, for instance, a cop story that to which the supernatural elements came later, or story set in Colma, or what? There's just so much going on in the book I'm intrigued as to what came first. That's wonderful that he'll be appearing on your blog, by the way. Congrats!

I almost, almost picked up The Scarlet Pimpernel yesterday when I was feeling edgy and not knowing what to read but picked up Firefly Rain by a fellow North Carolinian instead. I'm loving it so far! I will get to to SP - probably after I finish Shades of Glory - my boring challenging April ER book.

Did you know there's a group called We Seek Him Here... for fans of the Baroness and the Scarlett Pimpernel? It sounds like a religious group, doesn't it?

Smart idea. I'm trying to decide if I should change my name to Books on the Brain- I messed up when I started my blog so whenever I leave comments it says LisaMM, not BOTB, so I wasn't sure what was best to do on LT. If there was a way to change my name on wordpress to match my blog (and who knows, maybe there is), I would change it everywhere to be consistent.

Hi Jen, thanks for the info on the barcode scanner, but I only have maybe another 50 books to enter. I give away so many of my books and only keep the ones I feel I have to keep (not that many!) The ones that are going in my LT library are the ones in my TBR pile, or the "keepers", and all the ones I've read for my book club. So it's not really overwhelming at all.

Hmm, since it's your blog, it's your contest, and therefore should fit into what time is best for you. I guess I'd probably announce it now if you think you'll make it to your 100th post pretty soon, but if you aren't sure you'll make it (what with the traveling/wedding plans) you could consider waiting until after the wedding. Sorry this is probably no help at all!

What kind of a contest or celebration do you want to have? I think that will determine how you go about this. Either way it would be great. I did a contest where I had someone pick a book for me to read and, after reviewing it, I sent it to her. If you have that kind of a contest you'd want to announce it sooner. If timing is an issue, and it sounds like it could be, I would go with announcing it early.

Middlesex is one of my favortie books of all time! It's lyric, Homerific at times, and hypnotic. It drew me in with the first line, "I was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless Detroit day in January of 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan, in August of 1974." and didn't let go until the end. It's an odyssey, of a hermaphrodite finding her/his true self. It's one I could reread... and I'm not big on rereading. I wanted to turn it back to the front and start over again when I finished. It might even make the list of books to take to the Desert Island. You'll have to let me know what you think of it!

The Nen. I like it. And, honeymoon? Congratulations. My 17th anniversary is in one week exactly, so I'm a fan of marriage.

I, too, am more neurotic about books since joining LT, although I'm reading a higher caliber book more frequently.

Keep remembering that reading is supposed to be fun and DON'T make it too much of a chore. You don't want to lose that joy and if it's a reading for pleasure book, you don't really owe anybody anything.

I saw The Inner Fish mentioned on a thread somewhere. Haven't bought it yet. My husband is willing to buy me all my 888 challenge books for my birthday, so I'll get it end-of-June. At least it's on a list now so I won't forget it. LT is making me more organized, for sure.

I'm glad you like the spreadsheet... I thought about adding it onto my blog, but blogging my book reviews takes up enough time per book that I didn't want to mess around with posting an updated graph every time I finished a book. I guess I could post an update once a month or something... worth considering.

In any case, enjoy, and if you come up with any other stats you'd like, let me know and I'll add them in. :)

The trouble with owning all of these books is finding a place to store them. I am trying to be a little more conservative and use the library more than I did last year. I figure that if I read a library book and really love it that I can be on the look out for it. I just found an old Book Club version of Silver Nutmeg by Norah Lofts and I am over the moon about it. I'm going to work on a post about my finds at the recent library book sale. There was some great historical fiction finds there.

I'm also working on a list of TBR books similar to yours. There were a lot of great selections you mentioned.
