I share your impressions of Crazy for the Storm.

My favorite parts were the descriptions of the father-son relationship. I also enjoyed the trip to Mexico when Dad and son were visiting the grandparents.

I also like the author's descriptions of Dad's girl friend and his mom's boyfriend, Nick. The book was distinguished because the author seemed to have a chance to work our a lot of feelings. I think this book could be a first rate movie.

Your group's book selections sound interesting--I always look forward to your comments. We still select books at the end of the school year for the coming year, but I admit it's tricky to stay committed to the list when new and exciting books are coming along all the time. Our selections for 09-10 include The Book Thief; The Broken Bridge: Fiction from Expatriates in Literary Japan; The Elegance of the Hedgehog; I'm Sorry You Feel That Way; The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society; Oh!: A mystery of 'mono no aware'; The Blue Notebook: A Novel; The House at Sugar Beach: In Search of a Lost African Childhood; and Half-Broke Horses: A True-Life Novel. Of these, I've already read 3, but I don't mind skimming through them again next year.

Of the ones you mentioned, I'm reading Lost on Planet China, which I picked up at Kinokuniya on a whim. The writing is youthful and edgy, the author intelligent. Probably the combination of good writing and intelligence will carry the book, but I have yet to see whether he will be able to add much insight to his observations, as he seems to have no background in east asian studies. It will be fun finding out how he copes in China. I hope I will end up liking it as much as I enjoyed Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven.
