Always good to see an anthropologist at work. There are times, like these, I wish we, the world, had more anthropologists in positions of public service/government. I am afraid some government positions are filled with people who define "public service" in an ironic way.

I think I recall that you are the anthropologist who took the trouble to document the importance of "magic" stones among the folk healers in Borneo. Was this a unique regard for stones? Or just for the mystery of their origins? May have run across this in SPIRITS CAPTURED IN STONE, (which is filled with important observations).

Hi Jay,

How kind that you showed interest in my catalogue. Probably you curiosity was aroused the fact that I am an anthropologist too. Since about thirty years I after I graduated, I learned a honest trade and became a librarian. Since that I worked in different places in the Netherlands as a librarian and now I am running a rather big library with almost no users (too specialised) somewhere in the deep south of the country, far from Amsterdam and near to Brussels. Many books (mainly in the field of local history and social and economic history), and just a couple of scholarly users make an excellent environment for a renewal of my anthropological interest. I am now doing some research on the crossline of classification, antrhopology and knowledge organzation. It is now in a rather vague stage. I nicknamed the project "bungyjumping into the Cosmos"

Hi Jay, we share Unni Wikan's "Managing Turbulent Hearts"...I was married to a Balinese, and I thought her book revealed a deep understanding of the North Balinese. I recommend it to all my Baliphile friends. I'm glad I found your profile and am now aware of your books. Where did you study anthropology?
