Sobre mimI teach English, writing, and journalism at a public high school in New England. I love music and I think I feel a musical biography kick coming on.
I'm especially looking for good YA books to suggest to senior high readers who might be reading at a middle school level (for example), and for inspirational or "how to" or curriculum or public policy books re: education.
I'm committed to expanding the canon of books we teach high school kids. The books we require our students to read should be relevant and interesting to them, and should reflect the cultural diversity in the classroom to the greatest extent possible. Our students should also be reading more books by women. I'm not against teaching "the classics" (and I teach those too) but I want to expand our students' (and our) notions of what makes "great literature" worthy of reading and discussing. I would be very interested in hearing from other lit teachers about ways you've expanded your classroom canons.
Currently reading Thompson's Through Ebony Eyes and Kozol's Shame of the Nation.
Since it's summer, I'm looking forward to lots of historical mysteries for recreation when I'm not prepping for my new fall classes!
Sobre a minha bibliotecaMany books listed up to this point are books I plan to read. I'm finding LT the best way yet to keep track of those, and to add more to the list.
About my tags (especially for historical mysteries and other series I follow or intend to investigate this summer):
"first" or "start" indicates first in the series;
"next" indicates the next book I will read in the series -- I try to read series in order.
Books further along in a series won't be listed in LT at all until they're "next" (unless I've read them already). IE, a book that's listed here that's part of a series but has no tags is probably a book I've already read (perh out of sequence).
"Star" ratings and "favorite authors" will usually be for fiction only.
I'm thinking about cataloging some CDs (mostly choral and early instrumental music) and I'll be looking around to see how other LT'ers do that.
I haven't really started cataloging my professional (teaching) library yet (see above), or books re: religion/theology.
My "library" already includes books I've learned about through LT and plan to read.
I prefer viewing style "A," by authors.
March 09: When adding new works to library, sort by viewing style "D," sorted by entry date: they're easier to find and tag that way.

Procrastinating at the keyboard when mundane household tasks are calling. Spring Break and I should be a bit more productive, but alas . . .
Wandering in public library just two days ago and picked up L'Engle's Walking on Water, thought looked good and made note of it, and today I see you've added it. (Insert twilight zone music here) Have you read yet?
Trying to start Irish Cottage Murders (new series to me) but not sure I'm in the right mood. The book I just finished was disappointing (Killing of Monday Brown), and I need a grabs-me-in-the-first-two-pages book next, maybe even a bit of fluff.
Peace, Love, and Books,
Beth

Welcome to LibThing. We share quite a few books and I will be checking your catalog for more. I will also be letting my friend the teacher know about some of the books you have. She teaches special education in middle school.
I agree with Donna about the Early Reviewers group -- easy and fun to write a review.
Good reading,

So glad you're "thing-ing!" My email (nonschool) is mamasigs126@yahoo.com and mamasigs126 is what I have here as a user name. Their search engine is lousy tho so here's the direct link to my profile page: http://www.librarything.com/profile/mama...
Great way to keep in touch!
Donna
