Best Books of 2009

The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. The highly awaited novel by the author of The Shadow of the Wind was every bit as good as its predecessor and worth the wait.

A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway. Paris between the wars and a young writer learning his craft. A perfect book.

Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven by Susan Jane Gilman. Gilman's account of a disastrous backpacking trip to China in the early 1990's.

The Likeness by Tana French. The excellent sequel to In the Woods is a clever Irish mystery.

Scottsboro by Ellen Feldman. A fictionalized account of the infamous Scottsboro, Alabama trial of 1933.

The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan. The Great Depression as experienced from the center of the Dust Bowl.
