My apologies if I've given anyone the idea that I've read all of The Night Land; I've read the early chapters only, and sampled bits of the rest. I hope you can point me to the person/public posting where I gave this impression, so I can clear it up there too?

I love the idea of The Night Land; the setting and early chapters are among the most fascinating weird stories I've ever encountered. People I respect like it, in particular China Mieville. But...well, you understand the problem. I still hope to get through it someday.

My current recommendation for enjoying this story: skip chapter 1, read starting at chapter 2 until he goes out into the Night, then track down John C. Wright's novella of about a decade ago, "Awake in the Night." It's written in actual English, and is a satisfyingly creepy story set in Hodgson's (now public domain) milieu. It's in an anthology of stories in that setting, and was also in the Dozois Best of the Year's SF for whichever year it was. There's an online excerpt.

I was unfamiliar with the Weird until I picked up Mystery in Space, but I enjoyed it quite a bit, though moreso volume 1 than volume 2. I'm looking forward to Starlin continuing with these characters in Rann/Thanagar: Holy War, though.
