Thank you for adding me to your "Interesting Libraries." I am looking at the titles you have listed above, and furiously writing them down because they sound so interesting! Of course, I am familiar with Celia Rivenbark. When I lived in Wilmington NC, Celia wrote a column for the Wilmington Star News. As a result, heeding her advice, I do try to keep a frozen casserole for those emergency situations, e.g., a death in the neighborhood, etc. Tickled pink that she finally started writing books. She is a hoot!
My husband's cousin and her husband lived in Fayetteville, and we visited them quite a bit during our 16 years in Wilmington. Sure do miss Dolly.

Sorry for the delay in replying but I have been on vacation. I did enjoy 'South of Broad', but agree that there were perhaps too many characters (especially characters I didn't really like...). However, I did like Conroy's style, and will be looking for other books he has written.

Hi! I loved the book Olive Kitteridge but truly could not tolerate Olive as a person. I think Olive reminded me of a family member I actually have. LOL

I see you've read Atlas Shrugged. I've had it on my nightstand for months and pick it up, open to the first page, squint, and put it back. I want to read it but the length and the tiny print put me off. Worth the effort?

I HAVE read everything Bill Bryson has written, I guess that makes me a huge fan! The only other travel writer I love as much and have laughed myself to tears reading is J. Maarten Troost, Sex Lives of the Cannibals, Getting Stoned with the Savages and Lost in Planet China. They are both cut from the same cloth!
I don't know what to do now that Olive Kitteridge has ended for me, I neeeeed more! I will have to appease myself with her other novels....

I remember when I still lived in Philippines I have a collection of books just like you; but when I moved here to America I had to give away my books that I've been collecting since I was like 7. Now I have a whole new collection and its growing. I love to go to Books-a-Million! That's where I get most of my books; but sometimes I get my books from book fairs that we have at school. well that's it for now.

I went to her website after the first book. She has left multiple openings for other books and she is young so there could be lots of others. Anne Rice waited a decade I think before she wrote her second Lestat book. Anyway we can but hope.

I spent the weekend doing nothing but reading the last three Twilight books. I hated for them to end. No I have to wait for the second film. I liked the film. I think it caught the flavor of the books. I will be looking into the other vampire books you mentioned but not immediately. Everything else has stagnated while I was off in vampireland.

Well I am halfway through Twilight and am looking for the rest of the books. One of the reasons I watch the film first nowadays (I waited until I could watch the first Harry Potter film before I began the books) is because film versions usually suck. That way I can see the film and not hate it. I am doing a post later today on Twilight on my blog www.candyschultz.blogspot.com.

I saw the film last week and really liked it - did not expect to. I have watched it twice and now I must buy it so I stop renting it. So I thought I would give the books a try. I love vampires. I used to have my own real fangs years ago, made by my dentist. I kind of miss them but they eventually fell apart. I see you got the Flannery O'Connor bio. I just received mine today. She is near the top of my list of great writers and I can't wait to dig in. Take care.

Hi-I recently finished The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb, and I loved it. I'm now re-reading one of my all-time favorites, A Prayer for Owen Meany, since I'm reviewing it for my book club. It is even better the second time. We were in Davidson, NC for Thanksgiving - perfect weather. My daughter and her husband bought a horse farm in Davidson, so we all enjoyed carriage rides and didn't even have to muck out their horses' stables. Take care, Pat

Hi - you're absolutely right: we do share an inordinate number of books. The last really interesting book I've read is Seven Types of Ambiguity by Elliot Perlman, and the one I cannot wait to start is Wally Lamb's new book. I love the way he writes. I have Lace Reader on deck and just finished Freeman Walker, an ER book. There's just never enough time, is there?

I just now noticed your comment from July. I spent the summer on my bicycle, but now I am back hitting the books. Your list is VERY impressive, and truth be told, I have glanced at it several times since I started my account. I still have a lot of work to do just to get all of mine tagged and added. Right now I am reading Outlander by Gil Adamson (not the Diane Gabaldon series). Very captivating! I think you might enjoy it.

Hi, I've just joined LibraryThing this past week and am intrigued to find people with similar reading taste to my own. Some of what you say is my position exactly: I too look for deep meaningful books about life; I too go for award-winning books; I too like to own the books I read and if they're good I don't like to part with them afterwards. I wasn't planning to add books I've read but loathed to my library - they go to the charity shop. I like the quote about the reading list being a window to the soul.
I went through an Anita Brookner phase a year or two ago, and read Hotel du Lac (amongst others), which I loved. I've just read A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini - which made me wonder if he is a front for a woman writer. How could a man relate so intimately to a woman's world?
If you read Lionel Shriver read We Need To Talk About Kevin, and be warned, she's a tough cookie and ruthlessly intelligent, she'll take the wind from your sails.
I've bought Half of a Yellow Sun and it's waiting there for me to read next.
I've been disappointed with both Carol Shields and Jodi Picoult. The latter weaves a clever plot, but I found the rhythm of her book (can't remember which I read)repetitive: short sections always with a little swipe at the end, as if to impress, over and over again. Clever, but not subtle. That's what I thought anyway.

Gotcha on the lists! Yes, it can get to be very addictive. Like you, I enjoy the Orange Prize winners. One of my favorites is one of the first winners - Helen Dunmore's "Talking to the Dead." I read "Septembers..." earlier this summer and thought it was well-done for a debut. Let me know what you think of "Inheritance..." since it's on my list. Just finished "Books: A Memoir" by Larry McMurtry. A bit scattered in spots but for folks like us, how can you resist?!

I love to read and write and have started a blog which I attempt to keep up to date. I enjoy reading almost anything that does not have a staple in the upper left hand corner. I hope that an upcoming vacation will allow me to get caught up on some of my books.

Which one? The 100 Notable for 2007? I'm a total NYTBR junkie and look at their book page site every day on line. Have to say that I miss their old format, when they used to do what I thought was a more detailed analysis of the year's best books in all categories, including mystery. Per the 2007 Top 10 Best, I was amused by the inclusion of "Then They Came to the End." My husband loved it while I found it to be a bit too clever. Felt like the author was trying too hard.

Just picked up the new one by Larry McMurtry: "Books: A Memoir." If nothing else, I covet the cover! What are you reading these days? - Ellison

Thanks for the add as well! I see that you are a former English major.... did you ever finish? Do you have a career in a field dealing with books? My reason for asking is I'm looking to go back to school. I have a degree in Intercultural Studies but I want to pursue a career in Literature. I will have to go back for a year or two to get an undergraduate degree in English since my current degree doesn't support going right into a M.A. program in English. But from there I'm somewhat clueless as to what path to take. Any suggestions?

Ditto on [The Seige] one of my alltime favorite books. You might try [Hunger] by [[Elise Blackwell]] and [The Madonnas of Leningrad] by [[Debra Dean]] if you have not read them...also set in Russia during WWII. I also just read [Skeletons at the Feast] set in Germany during WWII and LOVED it.

I have History of Love to read after Septembers of Shiraz, part of my Orange July. I actually heard about it from a review in a magazine. I have book marked Book Club Girl, on your recommendation. You also just read Hotel du Lac, which I recently picked up due to the talk here on LT. Does it live up to the rave reviews? I just finished the Twilight series, and really liked it. Fun and easy.

Thanks for the suggestions about Jodi Picoult. My goal actually right now is to read all of her books. Im on my 3rd one now "Salem Falls." I do plan on reading "My Sisters Keeper" soon, I have seen things about a movie being made and out in 2009 so I want to make sure I read it first. I was disappointed though with Lifetimes version of the "Tenth Circle." Its was too far off from the book.

for me, the secret is a good book because it was a source of inspiration and deep thinking - especially on a the very valid point that we tend to think about the things that we don't want, as oppose to those that we do. (did that make sense at all? lol)

HOWEVER, i would borrow it, if you can, because it's not that good of a book on which to spend your hard-earned money!

Thanks for adding me to your interesting libraries. So far my library is a mostly books I have read by year since I started keeping track in 1997. I tag books ‘read’ if I know I read something, but it was prior to 1997. I have also started to use it to keep a list of titles to get from the library. I have not yet tackled adding all of the books I own.

I haven’t really spent much time exploring the social aspects of LT, but now that I have started looking at some other libraries, I see that I could spend a lot of time exploring!

Thanks for including me! Isn't reading the best thing in the world? ;-) I, too, want to own all my books. Sadly, I need more space for my addiction - my poor bookshelves are stuffed full, and piles are accumulating everywhere. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. You can never have enough books. I used to feel guilty about my TBR stacks, but I recently read a quote - on LT, maybe? - that basically said to keep acquiring books meant you were curious, interested and alive, (or something to that effect) and I felt better about my ever-growing collection. Obviously I didn't write it - I'm not that eloquent with my prose! I'm taking a 2-week all-reading vacation at the end of the month, and I'm so excited! I've got my lawn chair ready, stocked up on my ice-tea fixins, my iPod is charged, and I have my TBR books ready to be pored over. Happiness! I hope your summer reading goes as well as mine is. ;-)

Ooooh! I loved The History of Love (and The Thirteenth Tale, too). I though the characters in History were amazing - didn't want to leave them when the book ended! I've just finished The Law of Dreams, which was interesting, but not what I would call a plot-driven novel. Just picked up the Book Thief last night. Thought it was high time I read it.

Hi there! I actually don't like sci-fi or fantasy much either, but I absolutely love Stephenie Meyers' books. They aren't hardcore, overwhelming sci-fi and fantasy. There is so much more to the storyline that they are very enjoyable. I think you should give them a try... I hope you do and enjoy them!

I have looked at my anti-recommendations to see what I am avoiding and it is mostly sci-fi and math-related books, so I guess they're on target since I dislike most of that category. What are your least favorite topics? Just wondering where you are - is Cumberland County in PA? I read an interesting quote this weekend: "Know the library of a person, and you know the person." Must appeal to English majors...

Hi-Thanks for your note. You share more of my books than anyone on this site, so I will scrutinize your library for more noteworthy books. Yes, I rated I Know This Much Is True with 5 stars - something I rarely do unless I am very touched in heart and mind. I love Wally Lamb - what a talent. I just finished Mudbound, which I liked very much and am now reading Bastard Out of Carolina, which isn't new, but came highly recommended. Please stay in touch.

On the prize winners: I often find that I enjoy the nominees more than the winners. (Gilead, The Inheritance of Loss, and The Gathering weren't among my favorites, but many of the non-winners, like The Accidental, were.)

I love Jodi Picoult, I have read every book that she has written. Another author that I am really enjoying is Elin Hilderbrand. Have you read the Twilight books by Stephenie Meyer?

Thanks for adding me to your interesting libraries, I'm having a browse through your library which may take a while! I see you have 'The Grass is Singing' on your to read list, this is an extraordinary book, a must read. Beware of 'The Comfort of Strangers' if you have a vivid imagination as it has a truly shocking ending!Also I really enjoyed 'After You'd Gone' for it's emotive power & 'From Caucasia with Love' brings alive the struggles of mixed race sisters growing up apart in the USA. I also enjoy following the Booker & Orange Prize winners & nominees, just finished 'The Road Home' by Rose Tremain & I have to say I did enjoy it though I am slightly surprised that it won, it's not as good as previous winners. I think I'd better check out the other books on the shortlist.

Hello Dawn,
Your library is one of my favorites on LT. You are a very prolific reader! Amazing for such a young person. At least I think you're young by your pic. It's very interesting how we generally rate our shared books very similarly since you seem much younger than I am...I am in my early 50's, married, and have a 20 year-old daughter.
We rarely seem to disagree in a big way on our ratings so your library will give me some great ideas on what to read! If you don't mind, could you tell me what you thought of The Scarlet Letter? I see it in your library as something you've read but it's not rated. I tried reading it about 10 years ago and I just couldn't get into it. I'm usually compulsive enough to finish every book I start but once in a while, I just shelve it. A friend of mine and I have our own little two-person book club going on LT and we were thinking of trying Scarlet Letter again. I'd be interested in how you rate it. Thanks!!

Thanks for the friend invite! The cat is Cuppy (real name Cupcake) who is the funniest cat I've ever been owned by. She is my constant companion except when there are strangers around--strangers are anybody other than me and my husband. Right now we have company in the house so she is hiding out in the closet and I won't see her until bedtime when she'll sleep on half my pillow.

You asked me to recommend if I ran into some "good 'uns." And I see that you've put "What Was Lost" on your want-to-read list. Stop whatever you're doing and run out to grab a copy. It's amazing. I also loved "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle" by David Wrobelewski (sp?) and "Consequences" by Penelope Lively.

Unlike your last friend I wasn't as keen on Greer's "Story of a Marriage." I thought it paled next to his last book, "The Confessions of Max Tivoli."

Have you read either of George Hagen's books? "The Laments" and "Tom Bedlam." Kudos to both of them.

Yes, I have read The Last Chinese Chef, and I thought it was a great read. I read it a few weeks after returning from a trip to China, so I was especially interested in the descriptions of Chinese cuisine and culture.

Thanks for your comments. Over half my books are also on your library shelf, so your name keeps popping up and I decided to add you to my "interesting libraries" list. Do you own all the books you've listed? I'm listing only books that I have read. I'm trying to go back over the years and remember what I've read and write a brief synopsis of each.

I like your rating system - - brief, to the point, and similar to mine. And I noticed, with a few exceptions, that we rate books similarly.

I noticed one of the books you haven't read yet is Lucy Grealy's Autobiography of a Face. I highly recommend this book, and then read Ann Patchett's Truth & Beauty. It gives you two interesting perspectives of the same person.

I just read The Black Tower which will be published in August. I got it from the Early Reviewers on here. I have read one other book by the author, Mr. Timothy. Both are reviewed on my blog as well as here. I read The Golden Child by Penelope Fitzgerald last week and it was hilarious. I review almost everything I read on my blog and then cut and paste them to here.

My library is all over the house which is not the way I want it. I would love to have one room with all the books in it. It would have to be a pretty big room.

I have enjoyed looking at your library too. I recently read Water for Elephants and LOVED it! I do not actually own all these books--many I borrowed from friends of libraries. Just finishing up Water for Elephants, which I see you enjoyed. I'm also reading A Complicated Kindness. So far I quite like it. Not sure where I'll go next - there are so many things on my TBR list I don't know where to start.

What did you think of Eat, Pray, Love? I hear about it at every turn, but remain skeptical - not sure why.

Hi -

You pop up on my profile as highest matched library, so I began paging through our same 221 books. I saw a lot on your "own but haven't read yet". There are many that I would encourage you to move up your pile. One I have really fond memories of reading is A Short History of a Prince by Jane Hamilton.

Jane is a local author here and I have had the opportunity to get to know here. She is terrific and has written a lot of great books. I think this one is my favorite of hers. Pick it up and let me know what you think!

Sorry you didn't like Amy Bloom's "Love Invents Us" which struck me as a neat title for a profound phenomenon, worthy of Augustine or Arendt (who provides the book's epigraph).
Notice you didn't rate Joan Didion's "Year of Magical Thinking" too highly either (another recent favourite of mine).
Guess it just shows how different we all are on LT (and elsewhere)

I did like the quote from Jessamyn West, however, and thank you for that.

Have you read Marisha Pessl's Special Topics in Calamity Physics? It's her first novel and it is so interesting...different than anything you've read before...I promise. Part murder mystery, part comin-of-age...just good stuff! Reviews are mixed, but it did make the NYT Best Books of 2006 list. It made my Best of 2006 list, too!
