Sobre a minha bibliotecai am an english major turned librarian. i have to own all the books i read so i hardly ever borrow. I have read all the books listed under my "own" category. I love collecting books from library book sales and browsing the aisles of bargain books.
here is a little key to my ratings and i am a very tough critic:
five stars- soul-stirring, moving, perfect
four stars- excellent read, never lost interest
three stars- good book, worth reading
two stars- just okay
one star- sucked!

My husband's cousin and her husband lived in Fayetteville, and we visited them quite a bit during our 16 years in Wilmington. Sure do miss Dolly.

Sorry for the delay in replying but I have been on vacation. I did enjoy 'South of Broad', but agree that there were perhaps too many characters (especially characters I didn't really like...). However, I did like Conroy's style, and will be looking for other books he has written.
Thanks for adding me to your interesting libraries list - I'm off now to browse your library!

I went through an Anita Brookner phase a year or two ago, and read Hotel du Lac (amongst others), which I loved. I've just read A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini - which made me wonder if he is a front for a woman writer. How could a man relate so intimately to a woman's world?
If you read Lionel Shriver read We Need To Talk About Kevin, and be warned, she's a tough cookie and ruthlessly intelligent, she'll take the wind from your sails.
I've bought Half of a Yellow Sun and it's waiting there for me to read next.
I've been disappointed with both Carol Shields and Jodi Picoult. The latter weaves a clever plot, but I found the rhythm of her book (can't remember which I read)repetitive: short sections always with a little swipe at the end, as if to impress, over and over again. Clever, but not subtle. That's what I thought anyway.

I have History of Love to read after Septembers of Shiraz, part of my Orange July. I actually heard about it from a review in a magazine. I have book marked Book Club Girl, on your recommendation. You also just read Hotel du Lac, which I recently picked up due to the talk here on LT. Does it live up to the rave reviews? I just finished the Twilight series, and really liked it. Fun and easy.

On the prize winners: I often find that I enjoy the nominees more than the winners. (Gilead, The Inheritance of Loss, and The Gathering weren't among my favorites, but many of the non-winners, like The Accidental, were.)

Thanks for adding me to your interesting libraries, I'm having a browse through your library which may take a while! I see you have 'The Grass is Singing' on your to read list, this is an extraordinary book, a must read. Beware of 'The Comfort of Strangers' if you have a vivid imagination as it has a truly shocking ending! Also I really enjoyed 'After You'd Gone' for it's emotive power & 'From Caucasia with Love' brings alive the struggles of mixed race sisters growing up apart in the USA. I also enjoy following the Booker & Orange Prize winners & nominees, just finished 'The Road Home' by Rose Tremain & I have to say I did enjoy it though I am slightly surprised that it won, it's not as good as previous winners. I think I'd better check out the other books on the shortlist.
Regards,
antoinetta.

Your library is one of my favorites on LT. You are a very prolific reader! Amazing for such a young person. At least I think you're young by your pic. It's very interesting how we generally rate our shared books very similarly since you seem much younger than I am...I am in my early 50's, married, and have a 20 year-old daughter.
We rarely seem to disagree in a big way on our ratings so your library will give me some great ideas on what to read! If you don't mind, could you tell me what you thought of The Scarlet Letter? I see it in your library as something you've read but it's not rated. I tried reading it about 10 years ago and I just couldn't get into it. I'm usually compulsive enough to finish every book I start but once in a while, I just shelve it. A friend of mine and I have our own little two-person book club going on LT and we were thinking of trying Scarlet Letter again. I'd be interested in how you rate it. Thanks!!

Unlike your last friend I wasn't as keen on Greer's "Story of a Marriage." I thought it paled next to his last book, "The Confessions of Max Tivoli."
Have you read either of George Hagen's books? "The Laments" and "Tom Bedlam." Kudos to both of them.
Enjoy!

The World to Come
The Story of Forgetting
The Story of a Marriage
Have you read any of them? WOW - you are in for some gems.
I a wee bit jealous.

Thanks for your comment. I just finished Kate Vaiden by Reynolds Price. Grabbed it at the last minute as I was going on vacation. I had read Roxanna Slade by the same author several years ago. I like Kate Vaiden and would like to read more by Reynolds Price.
Have you read anything by him?

Yes, I have read The Last Chinese Chef, and I thought it was a great read. I read it a few weeks after returning from a trip to China, so I was especially interested in the descriptions of Chinese cuisine and culture.
Happy reading,

Well, thanks for adding me to your interesting libraries. You’ve been on my list pretty much since I discovered LT!

I like your rating system - - brief, to the point, and similar to mine. And I noticed, with a few exceptions, that we rate books similarly.
I noticed one of the books you haven't read yet is Lucy Grealy's Autobiography of a Face. I highly recommend this book, and then read Ann Patchett's Truth & Beauty. It gives you two interesting perspectives of the same person.

My library is all over the house which is not the way I want it. I would love to have one room with all the books in it. It would have to be a pretty big room.

I'm in the process of finishing "The House on Fortune Street" by Margot Livesey. Don't know if you enjoy her books, but I thought this one was excellent. Not sure what I'll start next but I'm leaning towards "The Boat" by Nam Le...Best, Ellison

You pop up on my profile as highest matched library, so I began paging through our same 221 books. I saw a lot on your "own but haven't read yet". There are many that I would encourage you to move up your pile. One I have really fond memories of reading is A Short History of a Prince by Jane Hamilton.
Jane is a local author here and I have had the opportunity to get to know here. She is terrific and has written a lot of great books. I think this one is my favorite of hers. Pick it up and let me know what you think!
All best,

Notice you didn't rate Joan Didion's "Year of Magical Thinking" too highly either (another recent favourite of mine).
Guess it just shows how different we all are on LT (and elsewhere)
I did like the quote from Jessamyn West, however, and thank you for that.
You have an impressive collection.

Thanks for the brief holla-at-your-boy/shoutout on my ever-popular quotes page and profile. Whereabouts did you get your english degree? Are you in the south? I think the writer who expresses some amazing lines each time I read them are the following: Mark Twain, Flannery O'Connor (!), and Lorrie Moore. Good god, what a talented bunch.

In the meantime, I'd love to recommend a book to you called "Burning the Sea" by Sara Pemberton Strong... it's only available used on Amazon, but it only costs a few cents (such a shame -- it's worth so much more!!) -- it's an incredible story and beautifully written.

I see your reading Clan of the Cave Bear, Is this your first time reading it? I loved that series, so much.. I just devoured it.. then waited so long for the last book to come out and when I got it, I couldn't read it because I felt I needed to re-read the older books, which I plan to do "someday" but with so many books yet to be read, it might be a long time..
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I've only just begun cataloging and have only listed much of my last two years of reading. It seems we share a far number of fine pieces of fiction. I noted on your profile that you sometimes read off the awards' lists...are you aware of the Orange Prize in the UK. Each year's list is a fabulous place to find thoughtful, original and quality fiction written by women. Their website is also a great resource for book-shoppers!
Perhaps, someday I'll log in the thousands of books in the house but....I'd rather be reading!

I am currently reading "To the Lighthouse" by Virginia Woolf, and will also read Tracy Kidder's "Mountains Beyond Mountains". A few others on my shelves are being eye-balled right now, but I'm enough overwhelmed by the choices that I'm waiting until a particular book starts REALLY calling my name (it may, in fact, be Mary Doria Russell's "The Sparrow".
I just finished reading the Narnia Chronicles recently. They were fabulous; life-changing. Now I'm on a C. S. Lewis kick. I'm glad I waited until adulthood to give them a shot.
Happy reading!

I hope you like "curious incident", it was fabulous. I recommend it to everyone. it's one of my daughter's favorites (14yo). I'm searching for more books to give her to read, she's in a funk right now because she's spoiled by books like that.
Our book club is reading the charles baxter, I haven't picked it up yet.
I love Louise Erdrich (noting an earlier comment), but I read her 20 years ago, so I don't know if that lasts. Love Medicine is the one I recall as best. Her husband's Yellow Raft in Blue water (Michael Dorris) is awsome!
I'm currently recommending (in addition to the pulitzer;s) Sweetness in the Belly and A Small Island. (sorry I am terrible with authors generally). These are two canadian authors that show a perspective on Muslim and Black issues that is different from what you would get in the states. The books are definitely stories about people and characters first though.
