Work as a web/technology consultant, currently working on LibraryThing itself. I've worked on the in-place editing for your catalog. I wrote most of the code behind Common Knowledge. I wrote most of the code for displaying reviews on the site. I prototyped most of LibraryThing Local. And I've dabbled in most of other code at some level or another. See my WikiThing page for more information about my past and current LibraryThing projects.
I also do quite a bit of archaeological data research. I am a member of the Coroplastic Studies Interest Group of the AIA and I am the primary developer of numerous archaeological data tools including Digmaster and the DATS Project. I was also the director of digital tools at the Lahav Research Project's 1999 paperless digital dig season. I have presented papers at AIA and ASOR.
You can get me at christopher at librarything dot com.
Also do quite a bit of photography, drawing, and painting. You can find some of my photos on Flickr under the username of conceptDawg.
I graduated from Mississippi State University and on weekends in the Fall you can most likely find me back in Starkville for a football game and some tailgating. Feel free to contact me and hang out at our tailgate if you're going to a game at MSU.
I live in Mobile, Alabama, USA. I'm not from here. We just ended up here because my wife is a chemical engineer and got a job at an oil refinery just west of the city. I grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas and went to Catholic High.
My ideas about design and interface were summed up rather brilliantly by Mr. Emerson quite a while before I came along:
"The beautiful rests on the foundations of the necessary."
"We ascribe beauty to that which is simple; which has no superfluous parts; which exactly answers its ends."
Goodness, that is perfect.
Sobre a minha bibliotecaMost of my books are related to either art and art history or computer technology. I have a few fiction paperbacks, but those usually end up being given to friends or "loaned" out permanently when I am finished with them.
I have eclectic interests: archaeology; history; technology; history of technology; secret societies (freemasons, templars, mostly from my interest in archaeology as I've been to many of the places where their histories played out).

We already have a catalog of 1100 materials in our church library which we catalogued using Collectorz software. If we were to switch to LibraryThing, is there a simple way to just mvoe that collection to your database?
Also can we back up a LibraryThing database to our computer here at the church?
You can reply to us at stgregoryofnyssa.library@gmail.com. Thank you!

I searched Common Knowledge by Related Movies under "Blade Runner".
It brings up both Blade Runner and The Kite Runner. Should it do that?

I tried Tim on this a while ago a didn't get a response. Perhaps he's too busy. Perhaps you are too, but something like, "Gee, that is a problem. We'll look into it," would be nice. Perhaps my catalog is just too big. Anyway...
More than a month ago I posted a set of problems to bug collectors:
http://www.librarything.com/topic/70403
bluetyson reported some similar issues but we didn't get a response.
The problem with adding books may be related to entering tags using the "tags to add" box on the left of the add books page, rather than with selecting collections as I originally thought.
I have also found two new problems. My full list of tags (all collections) will not load on the tags page. This has always been something of a problem, but in the past I had found that in Safari (as opposed to Firefox) and on a reasonably fast computer it worked. Now, no dice. It doesn't even seem to try. My main statistics page also doesn't load. Tried on several computers with fast connections.
I feel like I'm slowly losing functionality. But for a start, the inability to save the edit page is the most serious problem.
Thank you,
Eric

As a developer on Library I am hoping that you will be able to resolve a problem I have, namely:
The books in my library, that I cannot find covers for, and which previously had captions (author and title) have now completely disappeared. Can you please tell me how I can get the information back on the blank covers. This is also happening for any additional new books that I add.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

I have a question, and don't seem to be able to find the answer elsewhere. I have two separate accounts on LT, one for books and one for music (I know, I know!). Obviously, much if the music collection is unique, as I have the only LT copy of many items. The question is, supposing I want to integrate the accounts now that collections is available, is there an easy way to do this? I've tried "adding" to my main account from my music collection, but rather than just transferring the unique record, it asks if I want to use Amazon or some other source.
Am I missing something, or am I just looking for trouble?
Thanks,
Maki
P.S. Thanks for all your excellent work on this site.

The new widget thing with the book covers is awesome, but there does not seem to be any instruction as to how and where to place it. I have a book blog www.rabbitreader.blogspot.com and i would love to place it there, but nothing tells me how -- nothing in English, anyway ;->

Now matter what I do I cannot make it appear as part of the count on the author page. If I click to edit my copy and then click save, it will make the Nelson Doubleday page say I have all 45 books. It will stay sometimes for a few hours, but sometimes only a few minutes, and then it's back to saying I only have 44.
Why is it doing that?
Thank you for all you do,

I know you've been swamped (not only handcuffed to collections, but also helping out on other widgets, gizmos and jiggers that are thrown your way); nevertheless, I am hoping that you might have a moment to spare...
I would like to redo how covers are displayed on my profile page. Currently, I am using img tags in HTML pointing to the files used to display covers at the same size in my catalog. Ideally, I would like to use the coverthing_dynamic command instead, but it does not currently support a height parameter (only a width parameter).
Before I begin to aggresively bump the talk topic where Tim said that he would implement a coverthing_dynamic height parameter, I thought I would ask you if the pending collections capability is likely to provide a method that serves my purposes.
So...
1) will the initial release of collections feature the ability to automatically display on your profile page the covers contained in certain collections?
2) if so, will this be available for any collection, or only a few predetermined collections?
3) if so, will covers displayed on the profile page be adjusted to have the same height (I hate ragged heights; don't mind different widths) and
4) if so, will the size of the profile covers be user-selectable
Ideally, I'd like to populate custom collections (such as "Recently Read") with only those books I wish to appear on my profile (not tied tightly to my reading dates, since I definitely don't want my profile to display every book that I've recently marked as having finished). Will this be possible initially?, soon?, eventually?, never?
Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer this -- the best I can offer in exchange is a laudatory entry on the LibraryThing Haiku page...

I am very, very new to the site just hearing about it through an ad for the Cat so please forgive me for what may appear to be an inordinately dumb question. When I was searching for the answer I came across your name. Since I too have a son named Chris who is a wizard with computer repair and networking, I was compelled to choose you as my best hope for a solution to my problem. Perhaps not the most sound of reasons but my reason nonetheless, so here goes:).
I recently purchased a Cat scanner hoping to be able to use it to facilitate listing books into the two book swapping sites that I use regularly. Since I have a library of more than two thousand books I hoped it would make posting the books I wanted to trade easier. I seem to have run into an unexpected difficulty however. While I have found that it works pretty well in scanning in and getting the correct title and author to come up on the list here at this site, for some reason the ISBN is not listed in the information about the book. I either need to be able to import the information from this site directly into Paperbackswap.com and Bookmooch.com or I need to have the ISBN number come up on the listing of the book's information so I can have two windows open at the same time and 'cut and paste' the ISBN number from this site to the other site.
Can you help me with this problem Chris? Since computers are definitely NOT my strong suit..being as my son calls me, "computer daft", I need some help to come up with a solution. The reason I bought the Cat in the first place was because my vision is deteriorating and reading the little print of the ISBN numbers is becoming increasingly difficult. The prospect of trying to use a magnifying glass and enter the sheer volume of books I want to list is just too daunting, but I want to be able to offer the books to other people who may want to read them but can't afford to purchase them. Please help me figure out a way to get the information the Cat provides so easily into the places where I need it to reach.
Thank you so very much for your time and attention,
Celeste

I add a book, then have to do the author search again, page ahead, select the next book, repeat.
I must be doing something wrong. Can't imagine you can only add one book at a time and not get straight back to the author's list. But I can't see another way.
It would take me weeks to input my library!

I just send in my lifetime membership $ so I don't feel guilty asking a question.
I was introduced to LibraryThing through friends. So, HOW do I check out a particular individuals LibraryThing info? (I am not interested in blogging etc. just want to see my friend's profile/books read etc.)
I thank you VERY much for your help. Honestly, I did check FAQ thoroughly.

My question: I have a library of approximately 3-4,000 books that I want to catalog based on the dewey decimal or Library of Congress or other such respected cataloging system. The software I've Googled is for much larger libraries which need to be able to check books in and out and a whole lot more than what I need. I'm looking for fairly basic library sofware for a home library that will allow me to inventory and organize my books in keeping with standards utilized for much bigger libraries. Do you or any of your friends or acqaintances know the names of software packages that do this?
Any direction or advice you can give me would be appreciated.

For the life of me I'm not sure just what it is you're competing for. Most of the dedicated LibraryThing users are "keepers" as well as readers and have paid the lifetime membership already because we appreciate all the sort and tag functionality. Meanwhile, I think the social network aspect, while by no means bare bones, doesn't seem quite as attractive as the way it's done on GoodReads or Shelfari!
I'm not looking for LibraryThing to make my 5,000 book database available to Goodreads - well, now that I think on it I suppose in a sense I am - so much as I'd like an "import my reviews" sort of functionality.
But, I guess this goes back to proprietary use. If I'm building the personal database from mostly Amazon data and writing my own reviews, once you have my membership fee what exactly are you protecting or competing for? This looks to me more like fish and kelp competing over who gets to use the ocean.
Can my tagging schemes be sold as some sort of geek algorithm?
I hope you're not planning to billboard this out like MySpace or Facebook where the functionality drowns in the net noise.

I like the new member page and have just one suggestion: Under the section entitled "Member's Zeitgheist", why not list the number of the rating of the size of the member's library as it grows. I was chatting to Tim one day and he easily told me I was 16,500 in size that day. I believe you have an easy way to do this, and I would be sooooo happy to see my numbers bring me up the ladder. And yes, I suppose it IS PURE ego and against my theology, but I just think it would be the neatest thing!

At present, I cannot even ping LT.com (www.librarything.com) any more. When trying and pinging LT.com, I get : "host www.librarything.com cannot be found". Because of this, of course, a call for whatever LT.com page is returning a 404 error.
I can ping (and reach) LT.nl [72.12.88.181] though. Then again, LT.nl (as a whole) is crippled far beyond the original report.
