Sobre mimI've written two novels: Roo Kickkick & the Big Bad Blimp (Sceptre: UK) and Kung Fu High School (Harcourt: Harvest); the latter of which had its film rights picked up by The Weinstein Company. I am the mostly proud owner of a Masters degree from the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England. During the school year, I teach Creative Writing rather poorly at Chapman University in Orange, CA. On occassion, I write for .ISM Magazine. For more information, feel free to stop by my homepage.

The highest good is like water.
Water gives life to the ten thousand things and does not strive.
It flows in places men reject and so is like the Tao.

In dwelling, be close to the land.
In meditation, go deep in the heart.
In dealing with others, be gentle and kind.
In speech, be true.
In ruling, be just.
In business, be competent.
In action, watch the timing.

Very cool Ryan,

Hey if you ever happen upon some old copies of the Calliope (I have no clue if that's even the continuing name of the student lit journal) I had a disturbing short story called "Me & Dad" included in it. Think that was '89 or thereabouts. I had input the '91 Calliope recently & that's how Slick referred me on to you. Next time I'm at Borders or B&N I'll check out the YA section and look for your work.
Hello Ryan,

Slickdpdx, whose taste in lit is impeccable, recommended I check out your site. Glad I have. We have a Chapman connection. I graduated from the first class of Chapman University in '93; most of my undergrad I attended what was then known as Chapman College. Very thrilled to see they've hired a solid writer as yourself for their creative writing program. I was in several creative writing classes in the late 80s/early 90's, taught by the late Chapman icons, Terri Brint Joseph, Paul Frizler, and Thomas Massey, and current icons, Mark Axelrod, Martin Nakell, and Myron Yeager. Ask Axelrod if he remembers his first year there being forced to improvise and add Stephen King to the syllabus because most of the students refused to read Balzac's, Old Goriot. Look forward to checking out your work.
Really loved Roo KickKick, too! You are a gifted writer, bursting with ideas and you have wonderful way with words. No joke. Vivid characters, clever narrative and a compelling story. Best description of a musical performance I have ever read was your description of Shoe's gig.

Just wanted to say thanks for writing another book that I enjoyed so much. Can't wait for the next one!
I finished After The Banquet last night. I enjoyed it. It was really well done and a pleasure to read, but I still like Spring Snow and Runaway Horses best. I am curious what made the mid-life crisis and self-discovery of a fifty year old woman a more compelling read for you. Was it a writer thing? I also thought it was interesting how consistently interested Mishima was in politics in his novels - not the content so much as how they work. That is a strong element of the Fertility books too.
Thanks for your Mishima suggestion. I'm getting it!
I really really loved Kung Fu High School! Thanks for writing it. I'll have to track down Roo Kickkick.
