Sobre mimI am the founder and lead developer of LibraryThing.
Sobre a minha bibliotecaMy interests run to ancient history, Greek and Latin. So far I've done maybe 1/4-1/3 of what I have. Frankly, it's also gotten a bit mixed-up and redundant, as I use this account for testing. (There are a couple books I test out with, because I know they have certain fields or are in certain libraries.) That said, I've got a good chunk of my history, religion and archaeology in. Greek, Latin and novels to come....

Happy turkey day to you and yours!~!
My question:
Would there be any way of providing L.T. members with a calendar on their profile page to keep track of specific L.T. events, group reads, etc? Just was curious as that would be such a convenience as opposed to keeping it on my "paper calendar" with all the other "family" and "personal" appointments, etc.
Just kind of picking your brain here.
Mull it over if you have time and get back with me. If I don't hear from you, I will take it as a negative response and keep on keeping on with what I am doing.
Thank you for all you and your team do on L.T. to increase our reading spheres and enjoyment of reading. I appreciate it no end. L.T. is one of the biggest things in my life after family and friends.

I appreciate the ER option very much. It's nice to receive unedited copies of books!
Thanks.

I am tempted to stay because a number of friends have requested that I do, and because I do not have a replacement for this bookish community elsewhere, but at the moment I feel leaving might be the better option.

There is a related account I created - Existanai_Wishlist - which would also need to be deleted.

What a great site! I am eager to try it out. If it is as good as it looks, I'll have no choice but to sign up for the unlimited account. My only concern is getting the thousands of ISBNs into the data base. I own an iPhone and just got the RedLaser scanning software, which does a great job of scanning bar codes. The question is: how do I use my iPhone with RedLaser to get my books into LibaryThing?
There is a thread on this subject: http://www.librarything.com/topic/75167
As you can see, everyone thinks this is an easy thing to do but is not quite sure of how to go about it. I wonder if this is a priority with the LibraryThing development team? While the kitty cat scanner is cute, it would be one more thing to lug around and I don't want to do that since I already have my iPhone with scanning software installed with me at all times, and I am certainly not going to input information manually. If it comes to that, I'll keep searching.
Please let me know if you feel this is something you plan to do in the near term. I'd prefer to stick with one product and not hop around.
Thanks for considering this.

I wonder if you really took the time to read the relevant posts this weekend before you gave your "stern warning", or if you just counted up the flags, looked at the pictures and made a hasty judgement based on your own sympathies.
True, most of existanai's posts were extremely snarky, and some were even flagworthy (the fact that there was a certain amount of baiting going on is no excuse, but ought to be a mitigating circumstance). But I'm unclear how insinuating that some posters are Nazis is different from codyed crying "racist!" every chance he gets, or Oakes insinuating antisemitism whenever the subject of Israel comes up. Of course, you can throw your hands up and claim you can't police the site, but it sure didn't take you long to clamp down with a threat of excommunication in this instance.
It's become clear in the last several months where your sympathies lie. You not only contribute to, but initiate threads citing your "concerns" with the current administration. You pass over some of the more absurd claims of the PoliCon contingent in silence, but are quick to jump in to tell anyone on the perceived left how wrong or ill-informed they are when they contradict your own pronouncements. Of course, as this comes from the site owner, it can only have a dampening effect over time. Sure, we can express our opinions, but be prepared for the little L to show up in anticipation of a condescending slapdown from Tim.
Who knows? Maybe in a couple of years you'll be able to freeze out all left-of-center discussion on this site. Then it can be a happy haven for the Twilight devotees and the subterranean troglodytes of the Political Conservatives forum. (By the way, I've noticed that you tend to stay away from the PoliCon forum....do they scare you?)
In short, a bit more of an even hand would be appreciated.

I am not interested in skipping through the hoops of the TOS game. That's all it really is. I can certainly tone down my posts; but none of my other posts on LT approach anywhere near the level of anger that surfaces when I read the twaddle your brother and his friends post; and I cannot and will not shut up if I have to log in and see more of this shit everyday - for reference you can revisit the thread that prompted your warning, and look through the oh-so-amusing jokes about Muslims.
If you cannot or do not want to think this over - that is, if you cannot or do not want to consider what it means to be considerate of other people's humanity, what it really means to be offensive, or what it means to personally offend, not merely by attacking someone in debate but through words and gestures that express contempt, hatred, propaganda, deliberate misinformation, malicious xenophobia and the rest of that retinue - that is, if you are not willing to rethink how almost each and every thread about Muslims, Blacks, whatever ends up being a lowing, bleating, braying cacophony of smug hatred that ought to be a violation of TOS, if it isn't already - then yes, I do wish to leave the site. I too would regret it since I have made a few interesting friends/acquaintances here - however, I'll wait for now to hear how you interpret the TOS, whether or not an expression of racism or xenophobia counts as a violation, and if it doesn't, I'd love to hear why you think it doesn't, or if it does only when it meets certain (stringent?) criteria, and what those criteria are, and whether you agree with me that the bulk of certain forums should be flagged for being highly offensive to the broader thinking public, no matter what misused "freedom of speech" is threatened.

You make people work, don't pay, and addtionally, you get money from them.
You are worse that OCLC, and Amazon, they don't pretend to be working for humankind.

I like the idea of an LTcon, try it once say in Boston and see what happens. Maybe shoot for Fall 2010. Maybe some of the favorite authors could be asked to participate, and of course a panel or two of LT Authors would be fun. Does Boston have an annual book fair of some sort? If so, maybe hold it at the same time, if feasible. I have daughter in Cambridge and would enjoy an excuse for getting up that way. If it's a success the next location could be decided on at that meeting and real planning could begin.
Just a thought.

I would like to ask you for some explanation how it's happened that my review about "Traveller in Romance: Uncollected Writings of W. Somerset Maugham" has disappeared and the one for Raymond Toole Stott's Bibliography appears in its place duplicated?!
This is extremely disappointing for me. I take a great deal of pains with my reviews, especially considering my bad English, but since I thought LibraryThing is safe, I don't have any other copies of them. It seems I should make a back-up of all my reviews and keep every review of mine stored somewhere else except on Library Thing.
I would appreciate an answer as soon as possible.
Best regards,
Alexander Arsov
