Hi, Ruth - "Old husbands" prob all begin to look alike once past a certain age. And I'm past that age for sure. I don't do "threads" I guess. I'm not even sure what they are. But I usually duplicate my reviews on both LT and Amazon.com. Enjoy Florida. It's freezing here in MI - high around 20 today forecast. Good reading weather. My wife has begun preparing her annual giant batch of pierogies for the holidays. Hmm ... See you have The Florist's Daughter. I very much enjoyed that book. Hello, Ruth - Just read your "mini-review" of Amy and Isabelle. I just finished reading and reviewing Strout's ABIDE WITH ME, so now I've read all three of her books. I am simply in awe of this woman's "way with words" and the way she gets inside the skins, minds and souls of all of her major characters. If anyone ever deserved the Pulitzer, this woman did. I will be awaiting eagerly her next book, whatever it is. Since I see you are a dog/cat person, I will recommend one of my favorite dog books: Hal Borland's The Dog Who Came to Stay. It's a memoir written about forty years ago, but I just found it a year or so ago, and loved it. Memoirs are my new passion, after reading mostly fiction for fifty years or so. Maybe because I've been writing my own. Three books so far and working on a fourth volume. I agree that it would be interesting to meet many of the people I've met here on LT. I've arranged some great book swaps with some - other authors and readers. At my daughter's urging I tried Facebook, but canceled my account after only a few weeks. LT is much more my speed - and the people are a lot smarter. Nice "meeting" you. - Tim

I just wanted to pop over and congratulate you on your great and HOT REVIEW of "A Far Better Rest". Well done my dear.
I hope things are going well in your neck of the woods and that you are feeling much better.
Things are much better here and I feel like I am beginning to settle back into my life. Chrissy is doing great, is in therapy learning to walk and talk again. She says some words and walks with a walker but you can tell that "Chrissy" is ALL in there just by looking at her. She might even get to go home on the 11th barring any set backs. So good for her; our little fighter!~!

Yeah, what is it about France? Personally I think it's the attitude of the French: they secretly believe they are the superior nation and culture of the world, and they're so confident about that, that they've conned all of us into believing it, too. :-)

Or maybe it's the cheese. Any country with 250 kinds of cheese has to have something going for it.

Hey, Ruth, I just wanted to let you know how much I am enjoying my Writer's Almanac every day -- thanks to you! I have never really "gotten" poetry, but I am slowly succumbing to its allure. So much meaning in so few words.

Hope all is well with you. I bought The Likeness at our local library sale last night for $2.00. It may be awhile before I get a chance to read it. I'm hoping for a cold, snowy winter here in Missouri so I can snuggle up to a roaring fire and read, read, read. You probably don't get those kind of opportunities in Florida, although I'll be willing to trade places with you about mid-January!

P.S. I am an honorary member of the Bonnie Bunch. I'm considering changing my name to "Bonna."

Ruthie- Sorry to hear about your fatigue! I hope it's temporary! You were wondering about The Bonnie Bunch Book Club, it has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Well it's a phony. We were just goofin' off and came up with it,since we had all been reading the same books. The list Bonnie sent you, was a compilation of best books of the year, that others had contributed to her thread. Yes, it's a mighty list! Glad you are enjoying "The Likeness". Hi Ruth- I liked your review on "Olive" and I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I think it was easily one of the best books I've read this year and Olive's character is one of my all-time favorite literary creations. Check out my mini-review on my 1st challenge, message #171. Ruth, (my mother's name!) I do have one Herta Muller which I have not read. I picked it up used when I saw that she was one of the few women who have won the Impac Dublin Award. Now she is one of the few women who have won the Nobel!

Hi Ruthie- I finished "The Likeness" today and I hated to see it end. She is a very deliberate writer, likes to take her time but you end up so wrapped up in the characters, you don't want it to finish. You can check out my review! I will get your copy in the post tomorrow. Take care friend!

Our weather is pretty yucky right now. 40's to 60's with rain, rain and more rain. The best thing is the leaves. They are beginning to change!

Ruth- I hope you got your computer updates all taken care of! Yes, I'm a mail-carrier and I have a walking route in a western suburb of Chicago. It's not a bad job, it has it's ups & downs like any other occupation. I'm wrapping up my 23rd year.
Sorry to hear you were not a fan of "13th Tale". I've heard a couple nays on it recently and I thought it was much more beloved. We will probably go with "People of the Book". BTW, I'm nearly at the halfway point of "The Hummingbird's Daughter" and it's been quite excellent. He's an amazing storyteller! Good job on the Hot Review! I had one this week too, just my 2nd overall! Take care friend!

Mark and I have been discussing the possibility of another group read in November and want your input. We have narrowed it down to two books at this point. "The People of the Book" by Geraldine Brooks and "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield. So chat it up with friends or us and let us know if you are up for it and what you think. Probably the same plan as with "Pillars of the Earth" which seemed to work out perfectly for almost all of us.
Think it over and give one of us a shout.

I am so very sorry to hear about your kitty and other ills. Even if they don't find out what is wrong with her, hopefully she will pull through. We suffer so with our animals. Almost as much as we did with our children. I came home to a kitty with an injured right front leg. It is not broken as she will let me handle it, but she won't put any weight on it. I fixed up a litter pan and food and water area for her (all 6 of our cats are both in and out) but sadly, she won't stay in the house. She wants to sleep and potty outside. But I know she will be fine in the long run, most likely just a bad sprain so she is much better off than your poor baby.
Aren't we blessed to have the supportive husbands that we do? I appreciate mine more almost daily.
It is very good to hear from you. I hope that once caught up and the grandsons are back in school, I will have more time to communicate with dear LT friends like yourself.

Hi Ruth;
Just got home late yesterday and wanted to stop over and say "Hey, how's it going?"
Have you been reading any good books while I was gone? I only read one complete book while at Robbi's. "Battle Cry of Freedom" and it was mesmerizing. She and my friends kept me very busy for all of the 2 weeks. I was able to almost finish another on the flight home.
It was soo good to get home until I got home and found the dishes hadn't been done in 2 weeks; my last coffee cup was still in the sink. But apparently they ate out a lot. But the hubby took awesome care of the grandsons while I was away and of my mother also (and was happy to do it so I could go and spend some time with Robbi) so I didn't say anything about anything. I am just so appreciative that I was able to go and be with her for those two weeks. I got up at 5 A.M. today and cleaned the bathroom and did the dishes. The rest I will catch as catch can, but at least now the bathroom doesn't smell like a latrine and when I want to eat I can find a clean dish. So it's all good.
We went to the Pocket Sandwich Theater while I was there and they were showing a vaudevillian type play in which the actors interact with the audience. Popcorn fights are the rage and we had a blast throwing popcorn at the actors and other patrons and having popcorn rain down upon us as well. I can't wait to go back the next time!~! It was so much fun.
And they have Half Price Books stores all over the Dallas/Ft Worth/Plano/Irving/McKinny area. I think we hit everyone of them and I had to go to the P.O. and ship books home so as not to have to pay the heavy toll to check baggage at the airport. I travel so light. One very small back pack and my purse. That's it. Needless to say I do a lot of laundry while there, but traveling light just works for me.
Missed you and our conversations while I was gone. Can't wait to catch up on your thread and all the others. But I wanted to say hello as I know it will take time to play catch up.

Good morning Ruth;
I am loving your profile page. How very lovely, the luna moth. I have enjoyed reading your posts to the various threads and just need to find yours now.
I, too am a grandmother (of six), they have always called me "nanny" and my youngest niece (who is the same age as my oldest granddaughter) was never able to say "auntie belva". It always came out "auntie bebette" so that is how I got my user name. Just a little LT trivia there.
Anyway, I am sure I've not welcomed you yet, so welcome to LT. I can tell you are enjoying yourself and that is nice to see.
I hope you join the group read for "Pillars". I am really looking forward to that and Mark is doing a great job as "headmaster", is he not?
I will look forward to chatting with you again sometime soon. In the meantime, I will be watching for your thread.

Hi Ruth - it's been hot here this last week, but "hot" in English terms: somewhere between 86-90 degrees F. More than I'm comfortable with anyway! The humidity is the killer - I lived in Egypt for a couple of years as a child, but at least the heat there was essentially dry most of the time. That feeling you get like you can't breathe just finishes me off. Fortunately it's been cooler today.

Hi Ruth- How are you? You always leave such nice messages. Do you ever see the responses that I have left you? I never get a reply back so I'm never sure. As far as your question about "Brooklyn" and a group read. I don't remember seeing anything on that. I do know the book just came out,in the early part of May and a lot of libraries are just getting copies, so a group read would have been difficult. It is a beautiful story and I hope you enjoy it. I see you have added "The Circus Fire". This too is an excellent book but much darker and somewhat haunting.
Yes, I'm also saddened by Kathleen's loss. I hope she'll be okay. Take care and see you on the threads!

Thanks for sharing the quote from Helen Haines. I started reading only in the last few years, following the thread from book to book. LibraryThing has expanded the dimensionality of these threads 7-fold, slowing my search to a crawl while increasing its depth commensurately. Excelsior!

Armloads of books as a kid, well, isn't that the recipe for an interesting life? And isn't an interesting life what we, as parents, want to give our kids? And ourselves, not incidentally....

I don't know who rang the feedin' bell, but the slavering packs of guests have formed. I had to throw a minor hissy to get this coming weekend guest-free, but hey, whatever it takes. I wanna go to the beach sans people who need minding and talking to. Just me, The Divine Miss, a couple books apiecec, and the beach umbrella.

Damn. The doorbell. Another guest.

Hi, Ruth- I saw your comments on "The Shack". A friend from work, (we exchange books pretty regular) is going to pass this on to me. I was hesitant at first, now I really don't want to read it. I could take it, say I read it but lying is not an option, ha ha! These literary dilemmas and it's not like I don't have dozens of other books, waiting in the wings. I would also like to read "The Song is You", I'll have to remember that one next time I get to the library. Have a great weekend!

Thanks on the pic. A friend of my wife's from facebook sent it to her and I stole it. I used to do a lot of bodyboarding and body surfing in my teens and twenties when I lived closer to the beach (Long Beach). My favorite haunts were S. Carlsbad State Beach, T-Street San Clemente, Salt Creek, Imperial Beach (your neck of the woods) and even the Wedge occasionally, though never on an epic huge day. I miss those days immensely; there's a peace and an inner freedom that comes with being one with the ocean. I've had a few tube rides like that photo, but never with the sun perfectly framed like that. Had to put it up.

I have had several comments left by you and since I am relatively new to LT I have to ask. What is being a Friend? This is a part of LT that I don't know about. Can you enlighten?

Also wanted to let you know that I love the Thursday Next books. They are perfect for listening to in the car, but I always end up checking out a copy from the library just to see some things. I love the literary puns in these books.

Mornin' Miss Ruthie Ma'am...I can't fathom that I have two hot reviews the same day! That's unprecedented for me. It's pretty cool, though!

I'm a full-time writer because no one will hire me to do anything else. It's disheartening, but at least I have a place to live and food to eat. This weekend The Divine Miss and I will have houseguests and be working in the garden, so writing isn't featured largely in the picture.

My buddy SpookGirl in Cassadaga, not so very far south of you, tells me that there is a huge swath of the state that's afire. I hope none of it is near you...?

Hi, Ruth! Of course, I would love to be LT friends! You can never have to many of those! I also love the "What are you Reading Now" group ,it becomes something you really look forward to each day. Before LT, (is that BLT?) I had a handful of people I could talk books with and now, that has expanded ten-fold, which is a very cool thing. No I have not read "Home" yet but "Gilead" was easily one of the best books I read last year. I've been keeping an eye out for it, on Bookmooch & other places but I'll probably just snag it from the library. You'll have to send me your link for your book challenge, I'm on the 50. I started the challenge in December and it's been another great group.

I'm so glad you like my library and said so! I admire yours. I just finished Home and loved it; also Gilead. I am reading the latest Alexander McCall Smith #1 Ladies Detective Agency stories just now, also The Looming Tower which I've had for two years and am finally getting to; and have just gotten A Tree Grows in Brooklyn to reread, and a novel about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, I Am Bonhoeffer. I love your Wine, Women and Books Club and you should submit your group to the reading group feature in Bookmarks Magazine! Please comment to me from time to time about what your are reading. My best to your book loving cats and guardian dog, not to mention your husband. My husband Betts and I share right many books, too. He is reading Honolulu, a "woman's book" basically, just now and I gave him Walter Mosley's Little Scarlet, a "man's book" I just finished to read next. We usually, not always, like the same kind of books. Have you read Child 44 yet? I've been thinking about getting that one soon.

Thanks so much for the kind words! It's not hard for me to go off on a tangent regarding someone as awesome as Lahiri... and The Namesake really changed my life. Especially the way I look at books! Hope you have a wonderful weekend -- the sun is back out in Maryland, and I'm thrilled! Spring usually lasts about a week and bleeds right into a hot, sticky summer, so I'm going to enjoy this "in between" time while I can!

I've had All The Pretty Horses forever. Have I read it? No. After reading The Road I'm now more likely to. The only other I've read of his is Blood Meridian, which I thought was slightly better (by a hair) than The Road. I hear Suttree is also supposed to be one of his best.

I am So Cal through and through, living now about 90 minutes north up the 15 from SD, in Chino, near where the 60 & 71 merge. Grew up in Long Beach. San Diego is indeed a wonderful city (don't get down there often enough) and I'd choose it any day of the week over L.A.

Tallahassee huh? What led you there?

I see you've got 2666. Have you had a chance to read it? I'm hoping to soon.

Hi Ruth! I saw that you added two of my favorite books recently, "A Conspiracy of Paper" and "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell"...such a wonderful few days of reading just in those two alone! Influenced by your addition and by mckait's review, I've just ordered "My Abandonment" which is well outside my usual reading range. I avoid books with teen narrators or POV characters, since teenhood was such a painful time for me. I don't want or need to relive it.

How's life in Tallahassee?

Hi Ruth...oh my goodness! "Geek Love" and "How the Homosexuals Saved Civilization" and "New Amsterdam" all added recently...you are in for a thrill-ride of reading pleasure. These alone can make you feel every emotion known, including "camped to the eyelashes."

I've given some thought to reading "Our Lady of the Forest," but Guterson hasn't performed for me since "Snow Falling on Cedars," which I loved. Will you leave me a message linking to your review? I'd hate to miss something good just because I was feeling stubborn.
