I often wonder where people get the book they are reading. I am sure I am not the only one. Was it a friend who loaned it to them or maybe they found it in a dusty old used bookstore, maybe they bought it online. I want to know.

Why did you pick this book? Did the cover get your attention? Or maybe it was the title? Did someone recommend you this book?

The list goes on...inquiring minds want to know.

First give the title of your book and the author and then try to answer the questions below. I have added 2 questions. I hope you all don't mind.

1. Where did you get this book?

2. How much did it cost?

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?

4. How long has it been on your shelf?

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.

New thread and new questions - thanks callmejacx

I'm now reading Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman

1. Where did you get this book?
The Auckland public library - central city

2. How much did it cost?
It was supposed to cost me $1 because I reserved it but the librarian I got at the counter said she loves this book so much she couldn't charge me the $1!

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
Because it's a librarybook and also I've been looking forward to reading it ever since I read American Gods earlier this month.

4. How long had it been on your shelf?
One day

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
I love the footnotes and the wit/sarcasm of the authors.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Hmmm it's good but different from American Gods. American Gods had Shadow as the main character that the reader liked and connected with, so far Good Omens is missing that connection.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
57 of 345

8. Tell us what make your book unique.
It's a library book in good condition lol.

Andy McNabs "Immediate Action" (audiobook)

1. Where did you get this book?
At Amazon UK.

2. How much did it cost?
About 7 Euro, including Euro postage.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
I found it in unused condition, so I bought it quickly. And I usually cannot leave new books alone!

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
A week.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
It's an autobiography by a former SAS soldier. Not usually my sort of book, but I heard an extract on BBC Radio in a series called "Anger", where the author reflected on why he chose to become a soldier and how he learnt that anger is something that is actually *not* wanted in SAS operatives. So I thought this might be interesting. The author takes a look at his youth and early years in the Army, in a self-deprecating and sometimes funny style.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
I have only heard about 30 minutes, but I like the style. The author reads his own book, and he's not clinging to the text, it seems, so it is more like listening to someone telling you a story. He has a London accent, which makes it a bit challenging for me (as a non-native speaker).

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
Listened to 30 minutes of about 2:30 hours.

8. Tell us what make your book unique.
Well, it was still in its original wrap when it arrived. But it is unique in my library in that it is the only (audio-)book on tape (cassettes). It was published in 1995.

callmejacx,
This is not about my current reading, but I like your new Q8, so I just want to share this dedication I found inside a near-mint copy of John Gierach's 'Sex, Death and Fly-Fishing' that I found in a second-hand bookshop.

"To Bill,
Merry Xmas Christmas 1996,
from,
Your Illicit Lover,
Carol XX"

It's fascinating just because I'm never going to know the story behind it. Is it some sort of private joke (that's the boring option - don't like it!)? Did Bill sell it because his nerve cracked at having incriminating evidence lurking on his shelves? Did Bill's wife find out and make him get rid of the book? I assume Bill must have been a fly fisherman yet the book appeared to have never been read - was he afraid to take it out of wherever he was hiding it? As I said, I'll never know - it's like one of those really weird snatches of conversation you sometimes hear when walking through a crowd.

Go on, lets try and see if something interesting comes out of it:

L'amie de Madame Maigret, by Georges Simenon

1. Where did you get this book?
De Slegte in Utrecht - a secondhand bookshop in a lovely old house on the Oude Gracht, full of character (even though it belongs to a big chain).

2. How much did it cost?
€ 2.50

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
I had a hospital appointment this morning and wanted something small to stick in my pocket for the waiting room. And I've been on a bit of a voyage of rediscovery of Simenon lately, after reading John Mortimer's interview with him in In character.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
A few weeks. I bought it together with a few other Maigret paperbacks passing through Utrecht on the way home after a day out walking.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
Only just started it, but it's fun to see a bit more of Mme M than the usual reminders to the Commissaire to put his galoshes on.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Too early to say.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
25/221

8. Tell us what make your book unique.
It's a yellowed but otherwise quite decent paperback from 1950 (why don't French publishers use decent paper?). What's interesting is that it has Victorine van Schaick's bookplate pasted on the flyleaf. I googled the name out of curiosity, and it turns out that she was a well-known figure among Dutch librarians, who died in 1976, and had a prize for professional publications in the field of librarianship established in her memory (see http://www.nvbonline.nl/4175/geschiedeni...).

I am reading Curse of the Narrows: The Halifax Explosion 1917 by Laura M. Mac Donald.

1. Where did you get this book?
From the public library.

2. How much did it cost?
The cost of gas to get to town.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
It's due back on Wednesday. And I picked it from the library because LibraryThing recommended it.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
About two and a half weeks.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
The author clearly did a lot of research, and her narrative style is engaging.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
It is pretty much what I expected. I have read several books on the subject, and they all tend to run over the same details.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
I am about one third of the way through.

8. Tell us what make your book unique.
Physically, there is nothing unique about this book. But books about the Halifax Explosion are always of interest to me, because my grandmother was right in the midst of it when she was 5 years old, and she often used to talk about the terrible things that happened.

I am reading:

In The Bleak Midwinter by Julia Spencer-Fleming

1. I got this book through a book order placed with Chapters.

2. It cost $9.99

3. I picked this book to read because I was in the mood for a mystery, this is another book I bought because of LT.

4. This book has been on my shelf since about February of this year.

5. I think I like the way the characters react to each other. I also like the fact that the author doesn't beat you over the head with the development of the plot, just leads you gently along.

6. So far I would say this book meets my expectations - I heard it was very good and it is.

7. I am on page 79 with 279 left to go.

8. This book has no distinguishing marks as it was brand new.

I am reading The Devil's Web by Mary Balogh

I got this book from the library so the cast is free.

I picked this book to read NOW because it's already overdue - I was supposed to return it June 17th.

The book has been on my shelf a little more than three weeks.

I am actually not loving this book. It's a romance novel, which I felt like reading but it has a tortured hero who is really annoying me.

So far it is worse than I thought it would be. I usually like this particular writer but the book is kind of plodding along.

I'm about half-way through the book - page 270 of 437.

The Orchard Keeper by Cormac McCarthy

1. Where did you get this book?

2. How much did it cost?
$13.95

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
It was next on my to be read pile.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
McCarthy's descriptive prose allows you to really experience the narrative.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
It is better than I thought it would be. I wasn't expecting it to be as good as his other novels since this was his first, but it has been very good so far.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
I am on page 150 with 96 to go.

I finished Can't Wait to Get to Heaven and am now reading Where River Turns To Sky by Gregg Kleiner.

1/2: I got it from the library, so it cost me $0, which is the way I like it : )
However, I am seriously considering buying a copy for somebody else.

3. I picked this up to read for a few reasons. Wanted to catch up on some book club picks I missed and out of all the books I wasn't around for, this one sounded like a great story. The book is about an 80-year old man who inherits a small fortune, buys the biggest mansion in town, paints it bright red and yellow and moves about 5 other senior citizens (most "rescued" from the local nursing home). One of the characters describes it as "communal living" like "hippies" but "old hippies." Oh, and I liked the picture on the cover!

4. I bought this book home last week from the library, so it hung around for about 2 or 3 days before I started reading it.

5. What I am enjoying most are the things the main character gets his little group of senior citizens to do, despite their inhibitions - like going skinny dipping, having food fights, and playing baseball, to name a few. Along with the underlying serious theme of the story, which is old age and death; there are some funny, funny moments. One other thing I am enjoying is the way the author chose to tell the story: first person point of view from the main character; and first person point of view of one of the seniors.

6. At first I was a little disappointed, but this book seems to get better the more I read it.

7. I am on page 278 of 379.

**By the way, I did make "Neighbor Dorothy's Caramel Cake" last night. The recipe was included in Can't Wait to Get to Heaven. I now have less than half a cake left; my kids loved it.** : )

I’m reading Nowhere in Africa: An Autobiographical Novel by Stefanie Zweig

1-where did you get this book

Don’t remember , but I guess from Internet Bookshop Italia

2- How much did it cost?

Euro 19,56
More or less
27,34 American Dollar
31,49 Canadian Dollar
16,77 Pound

3-Why did you pick this book to read now?

Times ago I read a novel by Stefan Zweig Burning Secret , I liked it, so I wanted to read other novels written by him. One day , surfing the web or more likely looking for some good memoirs here, I came across to this title and I thought it was about Stefan Zweig’s childhood, I put it on my wish list and only later I noticed the author wasn’t Stefan but Stefanie , but since I’m on an African and memoir reading mood, I bought it all the same

4- How long has it been on yours shelf?

can’t remember probably a few days

5-So far what do you like best about this book

I can’t put my finger on it, so far (in the next answer I will explain why)

6- So far , is it better or worse than you thought it would be?

It is different. When I bought it in the blurb there was written that was about “An African Childhood” and that was the main reason why I bought it, besides I expected that it were written in first person instead it is written in third person, and also the character’s name are changed, the child is called Regina instead of Stefanie. So at the beginning I was a little disappointed and after 80 or so pages I was thinking not to finish it; also because, the novel pivots more around the child’s parents than to the child .
But , I don’t know why, slowly slowly , may be because I entered in the writing rhytme and atmosphere , I kept on reading it, and now I’m enjoying it, and I already ordered the follow up , titled Somewhere in Germany

8-tell us what make your boo unique
My own copy is a little crumpled

I just read Get a Financial Life: Personal Finance in Your Twenties and Thirties by Beth Kobliner

1. I just picked it up off hold at the li-berry.

2. It was Free.99

3. I picked it up now 'cause I am struggling financially. Plus, I have poison ivy in one eye and it's swollen shut, so I wanted something I could read and take notes on so as not to strain my poor little overworking right eye.

4. It never made it to the shelf--I picked it up this morning.

5. I really appreciate all the insight and ideas. A lot of the stuff I already knew or was aware of, but some things surprised me and others gave me a nice clean kick to the jaw.

6. It was exactly as I expected. Not dull or drab, with the right amount of insight.

7. I have exactly 0 pages left, unless I all of a sudden wish to buy a house and need to read that section.

8. This is a brand-spanking new library book, all glossy and shiny with no evidence of any loving or individuality. It's so pristine that I think I might have been the first to check it out...Yep, they got it May 20th, so if I'm not the first, I'm the second.

1. Where did you get this book?
I bought it second-hand from someone on a forum.

2. How much did it cost?
Hmm.. I really can't remember, but maybe 1/4 - 1/2 its original price.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
It's been on my shelf for 3 1/2 years now. (Major backlog!)

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
It has a very different type of heroine than is common in this genre of cozy mysteries... a working-class housekeeper.

I've had some pretty easy reads recently and I just got hungry for more Steinbeck plus it will help me work on my 999 challenge.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
about 4 years

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
Always the way he writes, his style, his descriptiveness, his words, and it helps that the story is moving right along and is well done so far.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Better, I was afraid there might be too much depth in it for me but so far I am hanging in there.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
I am on page 41 of 186.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what makes your book unique.

I'm reading Kushiel's Chosen by Jacquline Carey

1. I ordered it off of Amazon when I lived in Korea.
2. I think it was like 13.99
3. I picked this to read now because I am rereading this series in preparation for the newest book coming out.
4. Ive had it for a few years now.
5. I love the volume of the story in general...its just huge.
6. Its about what I thought it would be, I already knew it was going to be good, and I have already read it once before.
7. I'm on page probably 150 and have about 500 more to go.
8. My book was new when I bought it but it has some Korean yellow dust on it from a storm that hit when my window was open.

One of the books I am reading right now is Buried Alive by Arnold Bennett.

1. Where did you get this book?
It was purchased in a used bookstore many years ago.

2. How much did it cost?
I don't remember, but I suspect not very much. However, this was a book I very much wanted to own, so I probably would have paid anything within reason.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
It fits the June theme (the arts) for the Reading Globally Group.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
Over 30 years, but it has been read at least twice before.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
Suffice to say, I love Arnold Bennett's writing. Buried Alive was make into a film back in 1943 called "Holy Matrimony". Sometime around 1960, I chanced to see this very funny film on TV and made note of the fact that it was based on Bennett's novel. After reading a library copy of Buried Alive, I went after everything I could find by Bennett, an author I think deserves to be better known.

6. So far, is it better of worse than you thought it would be?
It's better because I always rediscover things I have
forgotten over the years.

7. What page are you on NOW?
I am on page 190 out of 253

8. What makes your book unique?

It is obviously old and also previously owned. My copy was published by the George H. Doran Company but is not dated. The Doran Company merged with Doubleday in 1927, so it is possible my copy was published before 1927. I do know that Buried Alive dates from 1908. My book has a dark red cover with gold lettering. The cover and spine are in good condition. The pages are also in good condition except for occasional brown spots. Inside the cover on the first page is the name T. M. Russell. Now that I have reread this delightful book, I only wish I could again see the film. Alas, it is one of those that has never been released on video or dvd.

Thanks DeltaQueen! My eye is even worse today than yesterday, but I'm hoping the whole "it has to get worse before it can get better" mantra is true. My right eye has been getting an extreme workout, which it doesn't agree with due to a life of lazy astigmatism. I refuse to let the little bugger keep me from reading or going online, and I have the headache to prove it. But I'm drawing the line at driving. I'm staying put until I have some semblance of depth perception.

That being said, I am "reading" (a.k.a. staring at with one eye) Cheaper by Rick Doble and Tom Philbin.

1. I got this book from the library as well
2. It, too, was Free.99
3. I'm reading it because I want to be more frugal now that I'm recently single and moving into a much more expensive place. Plus, the font is fairly large and has a good amount of white space to rest my eye on.
4. It never sat on my shelf. I don't have any shelves. It's either the bed or the floor, and this one got the floor.
5. I like how it started out with overall handy shopping "quick fix" tips, then will get more in-depth with certain expenses.
6. I don't say this often, but it's actually a little worse than I expected. About 95% of it so far is common sense, but I've only read the tips section.
7. I'm on page 43 of about 250.
8. Once again, I think I'm one of the first people to check this book out, so it's lacking in personality at the moment.

I'm reading several books presently but, to save space, will only comment on one of them: This Immortal, by Roger Zelazny.

1. Where did you get this book?

My father has a lot of old books, mainly science fiction, stored in boxes. Most of them are in my parents' storage unit but I noticed this box in their garage when I went away to visit them this weekend. Before returning home, I got permission from my parents to plunder the box, and I took four books, including this one.

2. How much did it cost?

For me, nothing. The original price on the book cover is 60¢. :)

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?

I just finished reading one of the other old sci-fi books from that box and am still in a sci-fi mood. I am currently reading a non-fiction book, but I like to have a light fiction book to take along, too -- often, on a crowded/noisy bus or train, it's easier to concentrate on a light fiction work than a more brain-intensive non-fiction or academic work. So I try to always carry one of each.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?

Since Sunday, June 21 (the day I returned home from my trip to visit my parents).

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?

It's small, light, portable, and short.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?

I've not read any Zelazny before, so I did not really have any thoughts one way or the other about the book. So far it seems okay, but I have only just started (per question 7). I suspect it will be a tolerable read, but not one of my favorites.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?

I am on p. 13 of 174.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.

I don't think the book is "unique" in any way -- no author signatures or suchlike. However, it is, in a way, a link to my father in his younger days. Not just a modern edition of a book he once read, but the very same ©1966 book that he himself owned, held and read, back in the day. :)

Edit to fix typos, and express condolences to MissTeacher. Poison ivy in the eye?? Ow. :(

MissTeacher, I hope your poison ivy gets better. It sounds awful.

Today I am reading Finger Lickin' Fifteen by Janet Evanovich

1. Where did you get this book?

I obtained it last night at Barnes & Noble in Cherry Hill, New Jersey where the author was signing books.

2. How much did it cost?

$16.77, with tax. It was 40% off for B&N members. I generally would not pay so much but you had to buy a book to get it signed & I was having a good time.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?

I got into the spirit of things. Janet Evanovich was at the bookstore, there were contests for people who had come dressed as characters from her Stephanie Plum books. There was the Chuck-in-the-bucket chicken, balloons, a disc jockey, free donuts, and lots of people having fun. I started the book the minute I got home.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?

As noted, it was never on my shelf. The book was released yesterday and I started it yesterday.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?

It's short, funny and entertaining. I love the characters. I live in Staten Island, right over the bridge from New Jersey, where all her books take place. The characters and setting are very familiar to me. In fact, I probably know many of her characters.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?

It's about what I thought it would be. It is meant to entertain and it does.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?

I am on page 105 of 308. So about 200 pages left to go.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.

It's a brand new book but it is signed by the author. I am using the numbered wristband that B&N gave out (so you would not have to stand in line for hours) as a bookmark.

err dunno $8 I think, we'll see what the CC bill comes to with handling and conversion rates

Because I've just finished blue mars and I always read books in series

5 days while I finished Blue Mars - I don't buy books unless I'm ready to read them.

12x of 711 I think, we electronic bookmarks there's no need to look at the page number. It's not been as good as red mars but still very good lots of discursive science and social engineering - things you see discussed in Pro and Con most weeks.

It's an ebook and hence this edition is always 100% identical to all other copies.

>35 "I don't buy books unless I'm ready to read them." !!!!!!! I envy your discipline; I can always buy faster than I can read although I don't do ebooks.......
I've invited myself to join this thread because I'm delighted by the wild variety of readers here. This is a nifty microcosm of LT.
Not only do I buy and shelve, but I also read several things at the time, so I'll just follow the meme for my current top three of the moment.

The Stone Angel byMargaret Laurence
1. I got this one from one of the very generous VMC sisters here at LT.
2. It cost nothing but my gratitude which I freely give and completely feel.
3. I read lriley's review of it, and comments from the VMC group, so I was eager to read it when it arrived.
4. It hasn't had time to be on the shelf yet.
5. I'm equally drawn to the clear-eyed, devastatingly honest narrative of an old woman's life and Laurence's very accomplished writing.
6. It's at least as good as I hoped it would be, and I was expecting it to be quite good.
7. I'm on page 192 with 72 pages to go. I'd like to finish it today.
8. This is a used book, but I appear to be the first person to have read it since its 1987 publication. I've made it mine by writing my name, where and when I got it on the title page and by compulsively correcting copy errors as is my wont.

The Devil's Company by David Liss
1. This is an ARC from ER. (Thank you, LT!)
2. It will cost me a review.
3. I'm hoping to stay in good standing with ER!
4. It hasn't ever been shelved.
5. I'm enjoying the inside scene at the East India Company whether it comes close to being accurate or not. I also like the protagonist.
6. This is my first David Liss, so I didn't know quite what to expect. I'm finding some of the plotting not quite as smooth as I had hoped, but I'm reserving judgment.
7. I'm on page 188 with 181 yet to read.
8. NA

Redemption Ark by Alastair Reynolds
1. I bought this one used at Edward McKay, a used bookstore in Fayetteville, N.C.
2. Having pulled off the price sticker as I always do, I don't know - probably $4 or so.
3. I'm hungry for some hard scifi/space opera.
4. O.K. This one has been on the shelf for 2 years.
5. I'm happy to be back in this universe, and I'm enjoying the Conjoiners who are mind-linked but still retain their individuality.
6. I was not wholly pleased with Revelation Space, but I greatly enjoyed Chasm City. This one is as good so far as *CC.* YAY!
7. I'm only on page 161, so I have 533 pages to enjoy. (My friend says my reading choices underwrite the pulp paper industry.)
8. All the notes are mine. Somebody did read this one before he let it go.

Perfume by Patrick Süskind.

1. Where did you get this book?
McKay's Used Books in Manassas, VA.

2. How much did it cost?
$2.60

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
Because my other choices were a self-teaching guide to math and the The Religion of Technology by David F. Noble and I'm feeling a little too lazy to pick those back up. Also, Secret Story by Ramsey Campbell but that seemed too light. I've been hearing about Perfume since it came out 20 years ago so thought it was a good bet.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
This copy, a few days. I think I also have a copy in storage that I bought years ago. After I finish reading it, I'm going to donate it to Operation Paperback- books for soldiers.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
Wonderfully descriptive passages, chap 11 can stand alone for evoking a lost world. Also, Grenouille is satisfyingly loathsome.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Better.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
No idea, I use a bookmark. Low 100s, about 200 left. It's a fast read.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.
It’s an original Pocket Book from the 80s; this must have been reprinted in several different editions since it first came out and by several different houses. No writing or markings.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
It's light fiction (which is good because RL is hectic right now).

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
So far, it is about what I had expected (It came recommended by several LTers in the mystery groups).

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?

I am working on two books right now, one from the library and one from my TBR shelves.

Wisdom's Daughter by India Edghill

1. I ordered and picked this book up at the library.

2. Free from library

3. I picked this book because I felt like a historical novel, and since I had just finished Emma I wanted an exotic place and time.

4. Never got to the shelves, I started it right away.

5. I haven't read a lot of fiction set around biblical times so am finding
this story of Solomon and Sheba very interesting.

6. It took a short while to get used to the author's style of jumping between many characters, and at first I was flipping to the front to the character list, but I am now totally absorbed in the story. I also like the appearance of the book, lovely cover, map, family trees and character list. All in all I would say this book is better than I expected.

7. I am on page 92 out of 406 pages.

8. This library book is in very good condition.

An Irish Country Doctor by Patrick Taylor

1. I think I ordered this book through Chapters On-Line.

2. It cost $12.95

3. I am trying to keep working at my TBR shelves even though I am also using the library a lot more, this book just caught my eye, also it's the first in a series of three, so I wanted to get started on it.

4. I've had this book since last January. I remember a lot of people were reading An Irish Country Christmas over the holidays and that got me interested in the series.

5. Humor. This book reminds me a little of the James Herriot books, although in this case the patients are human.

6. I would say this book is living up to my expectations - a humorous, cozy read about an Irish village in the 1960's.

7. I am on page 41 out of 337.

8. New book.

Blood Done Sign My Name by Timothy B. Tyson

1. I bought this one used from amp.
2. It was $1.92 + $3.99 shipping = $5.91 grand total.
3. I'm reading it now for a RL discussion group that met for the first time today.
4. I haven't shelved it yet because I forgot that I had committed to read it, and I had to jump right in when it arrived.
5. I am enjoying how the author's experience as a white child in N.C. echoes my experience at the same time.
6. It is actually better than I had expected. The title suggests a focus on race riot, but in fact, the white author has interviewed both white and black people from the little N.C. town where he lived and is giving a penetrating and balanced report of what they experienced in 1970.
7. Oops! I don't have the book beside me. I think I'm on about page 60 of about 250 or so pages.
8. I did buy this one used, and it does have writing inside both covers. The writing is for the most part indecipherable, however, so it's not meaningful. I'm happy that the text has not been marked.

The remains of the day by Kazuo Ishiguro

Where did you get this book? Someone at work had a box of books they were selling off to raise money for charity.

How much did it cost? One pound.

Why did you pick this book to read now? It looked the least daunting book on my to-be-read pile!

How long has it been on your shelf? It was in my locker at work for 2 weeks.

So far, what do you like best about this book? I'd seen a discussion on Libarything about 'unreliable narrators' and this book was mentioned, so I'm finding the narrative technique quite interesting.

So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be? Neither.

What page are you left on NOW? How many pages left to go? Page 215, 42 to go.

If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what makes your book unique.
It has £3.95 written in pencil on the fly-leaf and a tea-stain on the front cover. The paper is a bit yellowed.

Edited for a typo.

Pilcrow by Adam Mars-Jones (Faber and Faber)

1. Where did you get this book?
I purchased it from The Book Depository (UK), as it has not yet been published in the US.

2. How much did it cost?
The list price on the cover is £8.99. I was charged $13.30 for it, which is approximately £8.07, with no additional shipping fees.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
I had wanted this book for several months, as it was mentioned on The Man Booker Prize discussion group as a book that should have been listed for the 2008 prize, received a favorable review by James Wood in The London Review of Books, and it is narrated by a child dealing with chronic illness, which is an interesting topic to me.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
Less than two weeks.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
The narrator, a young boy growing up in 1950s Britain, maintains a sense of humor and joie de vivre, even though he is bedridden, almost completely immobilized, and in chronic pain due to Still's disease, now known as systemic-onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The narration is simple and elegant, and it's been a pleasure to read.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
I expected it to be very good, but so far it's better than I had hoped.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
I'm on page 171 of 525, so 354 pages to go.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what makes your book unique.
Hmm...I guess it's unique because it isn't available in the US, and it came with one of the exclusive bookmarks designed by the children's author Lucy Cousins for The Book Depository, which depicts a mouse reading a book.

Edited to correct a grammatical error.

1. Where did you get this book?
I'm 99.9% sure this was a BookMooch Book.

One point.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
It was in the front of my shelf and I wanted a light romance that is also on at least one of my challenge lists.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
Since March 25, 2008 according to my LT entry date which I'm guessing is pretty accurate.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
I like the character of Sir Gawan, he seem's like a decent sort of gwarcheidiol.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
It is going a little slower than I expected but I'm hoping things pick up soon.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
I'm on page 74 of 324.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.

The Blackwater Lightship by Colm Tóibín

1. Where did you get this book?
I bought it from Aardvark Books, a used bookstore in San Francisco

2. How much did it cost?
$7.00

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
I bought it on May 1, 2009, so just under two months.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
Tóibín has a beautiful style of writing, with great imagery and character development. Reading it reminds me of nibbling on a piece of Belgian chocolate (preferably Manon Blanc or Manon Café from Leonidas).

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
I expected it to be great, and it is so far, so it has met my expectations.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?

I'm reading The Land of Laughs by Jonathan Carroll.

1. Where did you get this book?
A ginormous book sale in the next county.

2. How much did it cost?
$2

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
Carroll is one of my all-time favorite writers. You should read something by him if you never have.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
1 day after I bought it.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
Carroll writes books with magical realism, which sounds ghastly (I don't generally like sci fi or fantasy) but it works with him. They're more mysteries and thrillers with miracles than fantasy; they can be dark, though. Think Slaughterhouse-Five and you've got the idea.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
I had high expectations and they have been met. In spades.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
Doh! No idea, still with the bookmarks. Around 170, another 90 to go, maybe?

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.
The circumstances are unique but the book isn't, in that it's in perfect shape. I live in an apartment and can’t abide clutter. Shelves don’t count but they’re full, stacked up bottom to top and in double rows. I stopped buying books unless it was something that I wanted to read right away and would die if I didn’t get. The sale was an event for me, because I knew that if I couldn’t make shelf space or hid them in a cupboard, I’d have to haul them to storage and that’s a 30 mile trek from where I live.

The trade paperbacks were all arranged on tables lining this long hallway; there were several thousand of them. I found this one almost at once and threw it in my cart toot-sweet. I found two others I’ve been looking for: The Day of the Triffids and The Wasp Factory. I also bought a copy of a book I’d passed on several months ago because I thought it was silly to buy books I didn’t have space for. It was not altogether a comfortable moment. I came home with 138 books, and a firm moritorium on buying any more.

Currently I'm reading I Want to Buy a Vowel by John Welter. I just started working, so the reading's going slower than I would like (it's SO GOOD!) but I should be finishing it at the latest this weekend.

1. Where did you get this book?
I usually get my books used- I don't really have the extra cash to buy new books (I only buy books new if they're on a major sale or it's a book I know I love.) I actually got this book at a used book store that was going out of business. Every book in the store was $2, which is a price I can afford! Left that store with a huge box of books...

2. How much did it cost?
$2. The thrift store I usually buy from sell books for $1.90 or less, and yard sales are fantastic for finding books (usually $1).

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
Honestly, because it was the smallest one of the books I got, and I knew I'd be really busy. I used to have this thing about NEEDING to read books I buy right away, but life gets so much more hectic when you get out of high school ;) Now I usually end up reading sttaight through all the breaks.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
It hasn't ever been on my shelf. Currently in my purse so I can read it whenever. Honestly, most of my books aren't on my shelf. They're placed all over my house so I can pick them up whenever I want. I think the books that has been on my shelf the longest is The Ghost of Hannah Mendes with a total of 4 years. I'm a sucker for cheap green hardback books! Hahaha

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
The characters are AMAZING! They're all so believable and funny in their own ways. My favorite- the cop- is obviously annoyed with where he's working. It takes place in a rather religious town in Texas, and he is anything but religious. The town fears satanism, and the cop just can't believe the rediculousness of everyone. I just love his reactions to everyone!

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Better. Much better. I mean, I thought it would be good, but I just can't get over the amazing characters.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
I'd love to tell you, but it's all the way upstairs and I'm in the basement... LibraryThing says there are 270 pgs in the paperback, but I have hardcover. I'm about halfway through, though. So maybe page 135 if it was paperback?

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.
Well, actually it had belonged to a library in Michigan. It has that plastic covering on it, the library stamp in the inside color, and that back page panal.

I sort of rambled on this, but that's just because it's such an interesting thread!

Recently finished Patrick Swayze: One Last Dance by Wendy Leigh.

1. Got it from the library's "Hot off the Press" shelf.

2. Cost me nada, zip, bagel; $0.

3. I picked the book because recently while sitting on the sofa and drowning myself in coffee early in the a.m. found his "True Hollywood Story" on TV while channel surfing and thought it was interesting. And, although I'm not a BIG fan, I do like Patrick Swayze. Own "Dirty Dancing" and "To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything ..." The latter is my favorite. I didn't realize that he had been nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in "To Wong Foo..." until I read the book.

4. Well, it got to be here for 2 weeks .... hung out for a week before I actually got around to reading it. Thank goodness it's a short book! "Hot off the press" books can't be renewed!

5. What I like best about the book is learning some interesting facts about Patrick Swayze that I would never have imagined. He was primarily a classically trained ballet dancer and always considered himself as such and was even part of the Joffrey Ballet for a time as one of the principle male dancers. Through the book I found out about a movie he made with his wife (also a ballerina) called "One last Dance", based on a play they wrote together, where they both get to show off their classical ballet training. (Ordered it from the library already!)

6. I don't think this book was poorly written, although it's certainly not going to earn its way into the literary hall of fame, but I don't think this particular author's writing style is my cup of tea. She uses a lot of comparisons, which is fine, but she seemed to do it over and over and over ....

7. N/A

8. What makes this book unique is that it was a "hot off the press" book, which for some unexplained reason, always makes the book feel special to me. The other thing that makes this book unique is that Patrick Swayze has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, so instead of ending on a high note along the lines of "what will he do next?" there were a few pancreatic cancer support groups listed. And, reading it last week, seemed to make it more poignant - and a little eery, considering that we lost quite a few Hollywood icons in the span of a few days. I sincerely hope he gets better and sticks around a while, he seems like one of the true "good guys."

1. Where did you get this book?
My husband ordered it, and I stole it to read first

2. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
Because he read the first page to me, and I had to keep reading that voice!

3. How long has it been on your shelf?
I think we've had it a week?

4. So far, what do you like best about this book?
The voice is very amusing, mixing dry humor with the macabre.

5. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
far better

6. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
72/309. Also, some very good lines on this page.

Take Your Shirt Off and Cry by Nancy Balbirer

1. Where did you get this book?
I snagged it as a June early reviewer.

2. How much did it cost?
Big fat nada.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
I saw it offered and thought I would like to read it. I requested it and was pleasantly suprised that I got it.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
A couple of weeks.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
She's both grounded and maintains a bright internal spark. I get the feeling I'd like her if I met her.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Better.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
Page 1, but I did finish the intro, which was about 5 pages.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.
It was a free advanced reading copy and the fate of the book's success rests in my hands. It's an awesome responsibility but I feel that I can handle it. It came in a padded envelope mailed from New York City, which is as exotic as getting something from Myanmar to me.
I also rummaged around and found other girl sprachen books by Rita Rudner, Margaret Cho and Phyllis Diller. I'm going to plow through those before I write he review.

Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon

1. Where did you get this book?
Bought it at Barnes & Noble

2. How much did it cost?
$7.99 plus tax

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
Well, it's a re-read so part of the reason is that I'm training for the release of the next book in the series which is supposed to be coming out this fall. The other part is that it is the hellish part of the month and half the secretaries are on vacation so I wanted something I already knew that I loved.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
Nine or ten years? I know I bought it, Drangonfly In Amber and Voyager before even finishing Outlander, I was that taken by the book.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
The character of Moirin. While I enjoyed the second Kushiel's triology, I thought Imriel and Sidonie were a tad tiresome. Moirin has spirit, like Phedre.

Right now I'm reading 1984 by George Orwell

1. Got it from the library.
2. Cost me $0.
3. This is one of those on my list of classic books that I should have ALREADY read, but haven't. (Not the whole thing, anyway.)
4. It was here for 2 weeks or more before I picked it up to read - had to renew it once already.
5. The best part of the book is the story itself, which, of course, we're all familiar with. (Who can get through high school English without reading an excerpt of 1984? ) *Big Brother is watching you - through the telescreen.* CREEPY! Hmm ... I had a dream years ago that I couldn't turn the TV off - not through the remote, not the button on the darn thing; even pulling the plug didn't help. It just wouldn't go OFF!!! What a NIGHTMARE!
6. I expected the book to be a little dark and depressing; but, boy, it was darker than I expected and struggled to stick with it. Fortunately, it seemed to get a little more interesting in the middle. So am enjoying it a lot more; I was determined to read it whether or not I actually LIKED it, so am breathing a sigh of relief!
7. I'm on page 138 out of 245.
8. Well, this particular book is unique. There's a foreword in it by Walter Cronkite and an afterword by Erich Fromm. You would think they wrote them yesterday, with their talk of ramped up national security, technological innovations, etc. It's a little disconcerting. The stamp on the inside cover says the library received it August of 1987, still has one of those old fashioned pockets where you used to get the card stamped when you checked out a book. (Old school!) And, this poor book has been thoroughly read by many, I think, since it looks like it has been repaired once, and it's binding is falling apart. (Middle of the book is trying to separate itself from the cover.) So, I am handling it VERY CAREFULLY and plan to point out to the librarian when I return it that it needs some more TLC.

Secret Story by Ramsey Campbell

1. Where did you get this book?
McKay's Used Books in Manassas.

2. How much did it cost?
$2.08 (Weird price, but lots of them are like that at McKay's. $1.01, $2.89.)

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
I have an overriding impulse to pick up something trashy. In that way, it's very much like junior year.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
Not long, few weeks.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
Campbell really can come up with some strange premises, and that's what I like about this one. A serial killer, who lives with his domineering mother, writes up his exploits as short stories. His mom doesn't suspect he's a homicidal maniac and sends one into a magazine contest without telling him what she's done. It wins first prize and mayhem is about to ensue.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
The same; it's very good. Campbell can sometimes get a little atmospheric for me, a touch of the poetic, which works if you want it to. I usually don't.*

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
About page 50.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.
I'm a little peeved with myself for having started it. It's good, but I'd like to start reading boks with more depth. Have you ever read Great Expectations? Do you remember when you'd finished you felt like your who world view had changed, become richer and more varied? Or some other books. I think Campbell is one of the best horror/dark suspense writers out there, in fact one of the few consistently good ones, but it's still a mind movie. My next book is going to be uppity as hell. Something Russian, with diagrams.

*You know who I can’t stand? H.P. Lovecraft. Him and his nameless beings that defy all mortal description. Try fool, that’s what we pay you to do.

3. Having just discovered Georgette Heyer this year, I am trying to work my way through all her work. This particular novel was the first she had published and I was curious to see how she started.

4. I had the book about four days before I started it.

5. What I like best about this book is the same as I like about all her books - her light touch, her humor, and her attention to period detail.

6. I have high expectations for a Georgette Heyer novel and this one comes up a little shy. Probably as it was her first, written when she was only fifteen. Her later books seem much more seamless, but I am enjoying it nevertheless.

7. I am page 129 out of 308.

8. This is a soft cover book and is getting a little worn. The fly-leaf has a name - L. Davies - written in it, and there are few unsightly stains on some of the pages. Time for the library to order a new copy.

Just a note: I finished Born Blue by Han Nolan. The book held some good morals to the story for a young reader. But the end was rather rushed. I just felt that the difference between what this girl knows at ten or eleven years of age and what she knows at 14/15/16 is leaps and bounds ad the reader is never told how she learns this knowledge. Some important experiences are missing or assumed. I also wish there could have been point of views from the mature characters looking at the world around Janie. Good book for a YA, but common sense only carries a person so far. I will try her award winning book Dancing on the Edge about living close to insanity. This hasn't scared me away.

4. How long has it been on your shelf? May 2008

5. So far, what do you like best about this book? The main character's kick-ass character

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique. Nothing unique. It was brand new and doesn't even have a bent page.

The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks

1. Where did you get this book?
Loudon County’s annual book sale.

2. How much did it cost?
$2

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
I’ve been looking for a copy for years.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
About a week.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
The best thing I can say for it is that there is nothing to like about it but I keep reading it anyway.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Infinitely more terrible. You know how the ghost of Christmas’s yet to come is always scary as hell and shows Scrooge terrible, sickening things? This book is its children’s book, death’s YA best seller. A cross between Lemony Snicket and the Silence of the Lambs. I cannot recommend it, even though in a dark way it’s fascinating. This book seeks to evoke dismay and it succeeds.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
Book mark, no idea. About 100 pgs left.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.
There was a cash register receipt in it from Hasting’s, an entertainment chain out west. This edition is about 10 years old, so the register ink has all faded and I can't tell when it was bought or where.

Sassinak by Anne McCaffrey andElizabeth Moon

1. Where did you get this book?
I got it from my high school.

2. How much did it cost?
It was free, they were getting rid of it.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
I bought the sequel, read it, and found out I had forgotten a bit of it. So now I'm reading both.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
Far, far too long. About a year, I think.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
I like the smooth way the action moves, and the intelligent way the story progresses.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
I remember my first impressions, and it has passed them again and again.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
I am on page 235, with 98 to go.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.
This book is one of the first I "stole" from my high school library, and one of the first used books for me to own. It also still has a library card still in it.

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

1. Where did you get this book?
Fairfax lie-berry.

2. How much did it cost?
Zilch.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
I was surfing through Amazon and saw it. The first line got me, something like ‘I was sitting in the cab wondering if I was overdressed for the party, when I saw mom digging through a trash can.’ Very cool.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
It’s an audio book. I picked it up Sunday and have been listening to it in the car.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
It is astonishing. I recommend it to adults without qualification.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
See above. I am in awe of Jeannette Walls.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
Audio book, I’m about 2/3 of the way through.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.
It’s pretty clean for an audio book and doesn’t have jelly on the disks or anything. I think people are taking care of it as they listen to her story.

Currently I am "still" reading The Log from the Sea of Cortez by John Steinbeck.

1. Where did you get this book?
At my favorite, now out of business :-( bookstore; Browser Books.

2. How much did it cost?
$7.50.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
It was one of Steinbeck's I had not yet read and, I believe, his only work of nonfiction.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
Probably about 3 or 4 years.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
His words, the way he puts his sentences together, the fact that I can "see" what he is writing about, his thoughts on mankind and the comparisons he makes.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Better, because I am not too big on nonfiction and it is reading quite smoothly. Reading more nonfiction is a challenge I am working on.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
I am on page 187 of 224; if I count the appendix, which I will read, of 274.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could
have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.

Bookmooch/the UK/my mailbox.

2. How much did it cost?

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
I grabbed it to read in the car (I don't drive, so it's okay) because it was closest.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
One week.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
The fact that it doesn't take itself too seriously.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Better, because it is insanely readable.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
On page 153 of 416. 263 pages left.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.

It has been a while since I last posted here - Oops!

I am currently reading City of Shadows by Ariana Franklin:

1. Where did you get this book? - The public library.

2. How much did it cost? - Nothing, unless you count the 90 cents in overdue fines I paid when I checked the book out :-)

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW? - I have enjoyed Franklin's Mistress of the Art of Death series and my last book didn't really appeal to me so I wanted to venture back into more familiar territory.

4. How long has it been on your shelf? - 3, maybe 4 days?

5. So far, what do you like best about this book? - I really like the dark, almost gothic feel of the story... definitely a change from Franklin's 12 century mysteries.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be? - Better! I find the characters very life-like/ believable and the story captivating.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go? - I am on page 122 with another 297 to go.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique. - the book is well read - I noticed that the library has date stamped it June 13, 2006 so it has some water damage in places and the cover (it is a paperback) is starting to curl but no highlighting or notes written in the margins.

Am reading The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia A. McKillip along with all the rest (more-than-one-book-at-a-time reader here)

1. Where did you get this book? - Amazon after a rec by somebody here on LT

2. How much did it cost? - $4.00

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW? - No reason (as per usual). Just plucked it off the shelf and began.

4. How long has it been on your shelf? - approximately 11 months

5. So far, what do you like best about this book? - The writing has a nice feel to it and it isn't a quest fantasy - dislike quest fantasies

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be? - Had no expectations for it, but so far it seems pretty good

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go? - On page 56 with 287 left to go

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique. - It's used and once belonged to the Pierce County Library system (Washington state, I think). It's in good shape though, especially for a paperback. It came with a piece of white, lined paper from a three-ring binder on which someone has written down a list of his/her (I think her - this kind of list-making is a girl thing to do) friends. One of them is spelled Troblemaker. Hmmm. Am guessing that we compiled this list in school which might explain our failure to notice our atrocious spelling. Too much goofing off going on here.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW? The Global Reading Group was reading about Art and it was one of the books I'd considered for that, though I read another instead. Decided that this was too interesting looking to put back on TBR.

4. How long has it been on your shelf? 2 months?

5. So far, what do you like best about this book? It's educating me about the art of rugmaking. Really fascinating.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be? Better.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go? On ~ p. 85 of 385; 300 left.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW? Finished another book and this was next in line.

4. How long has it been on your shelf? 1 week.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book? It's very amusing. I love Sherman Alexie's writing, but the feeling and tone in this one is very different and quite lovely.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be? Better.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go? 42 of 230; 188 left to go.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique. It's been in the hands of 15 people and in 5 countries (U.S., Iran, U.K., Germany, Italy) so, though it's a HB edition, it's a little beat up, but still in very good condition. That's a very good thing because it has lots more traveling to do.

#117 - whymaggiemay - The Blood of Flowers is one of my favorite books for this year.

I am currently reading Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay.

1. This book came off my TBR shelf, and I have no idea how long it's been there. I discovered this author a few years ago and immediately went out and bought all his books, this is the last one of his that I have, so I know I have been saving it for some time.

2. It's price tag says $11.99 Canadian

3. I was ready to be totally lost in a good fantasy book.

4. see Nbr. 1 above

5. Great writing, draws you into story gradually, then wham, all of sudden you find you just can't put the book down. His stories often mirror historical events from our world, and he peoples his books with interesting and believeable characters.

6. I found it has taken me awhile to get into this book, much slower than previous ones I have read. But it has taken off now, I trust this author, and I know I am in for a good read.

7. I am on page 142 out of 771 (including the afterword). A BIG book

8. New book when I got it.

I'm working on two books at the moment, but I only have one of them, The Pirate Queen, with me at the moment. (I'm reading the other, Letters to Father, as what I call an "at-home book" -- one that I read when I don't quite feel up to my Other Current Reading and/or when I'm likely to forget to put it back in my bag before I leave for work.)

1. Where did you get this book?
I'm 98% sure it was at my local neighborhood bookstore in Brooklyn.

2. How much did it cost?
It says $15.95 on the back cover, so something in that area.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
I've been reading a lot of American history lately, and decided to read something different -- in this case, by retrieving my interest in Elizabethan England.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
About a year.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
The author, Susan Ronald managed to pull off writing descriptive prose using reasonably modern language, but without sounding inappropriately informal or breezy.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Perhaps it's necessary or inevitable, but the narrative sometimes jumps around a little more than I would like.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
I’m about 130 pages in; the after-party (endnotes) begin on page 386.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.

Cut & Run by Madeleine Urban and Abigail Roux

1. Where did you get this book?

Amazon.com.

2. How much did it cost?

List is $17.99, I think I paid $13 and change after the Amazon discount.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?

I was over on amazon looking at some of the discussions and this particular book came up. This is kind of a weird genre, a combo of murder/suspense, gay lit and romance.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?

I made it wait one day while I was finishing the book I was currently reading when it came in.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?

Interesting characters, fast moving plot, lots of action.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?

I was looking for a story with substance so I'm happy this one is working out so far.

7. What page are you on NOW?

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?

I finished off the last Dresden novel, Turn Coat the other day and decided I wanted a little more Harry Dresden. So, in spite of my determination not to read any more book based graphic novels, I requested it anyway.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?

It is a Harry Dresden story.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?

It turns out I'm just not a big fan of Americanized manga and/or comic books so although I'm not totally disappointed, I'm glad I didn't spend any money on it.

7. What page are you on NOW?

How many pages left to go? I'm about halfway so I'll guess 80 of 160. I don't have the book with me right now to check.

I don't have teevee (I don't watch more than a couple hours a month and when they switched to digital broadcasts I decided to just let it go. Of course, I spent years 6-16 mainlining the networks, so I did my time.) I'm also on the road this weekend. So I'm not reading anything tonight and am glued to the set like a bug on a windshield. I did bring a copy of The Art of Fiction by John Gardner.

Library

2. How much did it cost
$0.00 US

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling

1. I got this book from Target.

2. I can't remember exactly what I paid for it, but it was probably around $15.

3. I am re-reading it now because the movie is coming out this week!

4. It's been on my shelf since it came out and I finished it about 4 years ago.

5. The thing that I am enjoying the most is how much I had forgotten! I thought I would have remembered so much more, so I'm usually going, "Oh yeah, I forgot about that!" or "Why don't I remember this?!"

6. Since it's a re-read, there aren't really any surprises here.

7. I'm on page 304 and have 348 to go.

8. Since I got it new, the only defacing is that of my own doing: an address label I put in the front cover, and I also wrote, "This Book is the Property of the Half-Blood Prince" on the first page for fun.

Currently I am reading Mitch Albom's "For One More Day." It is a fiction novel that explores the question "what would you do if you had one more day with a loved one that has passed away?" I am reading it because I am a huge fan of Albom, and have already read "Tuesday's With Morrie" and "The Five People You Meet In Heaven." I am hoping to finish this book by the end of September because he has a new book coming out called "Have a Little Faith." I saw a preview for the book on YouTube where he reads the first couple of pages. This is the link if you are also a fan, or just want to learn more:

I've now moved on to reading Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz

1. Where did you get this book?

I picked this up during a library bag sale. It is one I went in to look for so I remember being very pleased at finding it.

2. How much did it cost?

I think it was a bag of books for $2.00 and I don't remember how many books I picked up that day. Safe to say it was pretty cheap.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?

It is on three of my "Challenge" lists and I've fallen way behind on all of them. Also, I've been wanting to read this for a really long time!

4. How long has it been on your shelf?

Since October 5, 2007 (I love that LT keeps automatic track of entry dates, it is so helpful!)

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?

The premise. I like the idea of reading about people who see ghosts.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?

Medical London: City of Diseases, City of Cures by Richard Barnett

1. Where did you get this book?
From the London Review Bookshop

2. How much did it cost?
£15.99, plus £7.95 postage and handling

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
I'm traveling to London the week after next, and want to learn more about the medical history of London. I also plan to visit the Wellcome Collection, which published Medical London.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
Since late December

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
Medical London consists of three parts: "Sick City", a collection of essays about the medical history of London; "Anatomy of the City", a guide to present and former sites of medical importance in the city; and six pamphlets with maps of walking tours of medical London, contained in a beautiful holder. It is one of the most unique "books" in my library!

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
I'm currently reading "Sick City", a series of essays written by Richard Barnett, and it is fabulous so far! I thought this would be an interesting "book" when I first ordered it, but it has greatly exceeded my expectations. I'll bring "Anatomy of the City" and the pamphlets with me, as I walk around the capital.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?

1. Where did you get this book?
Loudon County annual lie-berry sale.

2. How much did it cost?
Fiddy centavos.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
If I read any more best-selling trashy novels my head would implode. So I decided to read an old trashy novel.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
Couple of weeks.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
A little less than the thrilling tale of derring-do I had thought it would be. It’s more like an adventure story written by Oscar Wilde, but with the gay parts tuned way down. Mostly. It’s a swishbuckling adventure story.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
A weensy skosh less.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
It's forming part of my English Degree at this exact moment and is the next text I have to write an essay on.

Approximately six months. I know, seems like a long time, but I didn't get a chance to read any of the set texts before the degree started.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
I actually like that it's pretty personal to me, in the subject matter. And also that it's a play.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Much better. I wasn't expecting much, but am glad that I have persevered with it. It's opened up lines of conversation that I would never have gone down with many people.

2. How much did it cost? Nothing

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW? I saw it on a list of new books and anything about the 19th century interests me immediately.

I'm working on 2 books, 1 fiction, 1 non-fiction:

(Fiction) The Fifth Floor by Michael Harvey

1. I got it at the local Public Library

2. It cost nothing! (as long as I get it back in time!)

3 It came up as a recommendation on my LT profile, and the next day I saw it on the library shelf! So I decided to try it; I was in the mood for a mystery. But I was reading other things first and had to renew it, so I figured now it had better be next.

4. It sat on on my "library book" shelf for about 3 weeks (while I finished other books ahead of it) before I finally opened it up today.

5. I like the style. It's written with the very lean style of the '40's "hard boiled" detectives, but set in modern Chicago. Also, I like that the storyline has an angle involving the city's history, the Great Chicago Fire. (For some reason, I love to read books about disasters.)

6. I'd say it's better than I expected. So far, I really like the way this guy writes.

7. I'm on pg. 47 of 273 pages, so I have 226 left.

8. Book is in pretty pristine condition.

(Non-fiction) Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson.

1. I picked this one up on loan at the county library when I was there for my son's tutoring session.

2. It was free (and that library doesn't even charge fines if it's late!)

3. I saw it recommended by someone on LT, I think on the Disaster Buffs group, Since the county library had it, I figured I'd read it while I was visiting there regularly for ease of return.

4. I don't think this book made it to my bookshelf before I started it.

5. I like the fact that it's well researched.

6. It's about what I expected -- a little slow at first, but I think one of the reviews led me to expect that.

7. I'm on page 102 of 316, so there's 214 pages left.

8. Book is in new condition.

7. Finished the first short story.

8. Someone along the way has underlined (in different colors of pen!) and written marginalia. That would be annoying enough to me (I'm a terrible purist about not writing in books), but to make it even worse s/he has underlined unimportant things and, so far, has made insipid remarks. I certainly could forgive it more easily if they were at least insightful or even interesting. (Maggie, trying to take calming breaths.)

I'm off reading for pleasure. From now on, I've entered into the Age of the Grindstone. Tomorrow I teach myself Dreamweaver and from there will branch out into the other useful arts. I don’t know what the manual’s called, but it’s probably something completely unimaginative like ‘Dreamweaver’. They always do that with textbooks, name the book after its subject. Jansen spent years researching the history of art, and when he wrote his magnum opus he called it "The History of Art." Would Nabokov do that? No! He's call it 'Blue Spot'. I can already feel myself becoming more inflexible. I used to have nightmares about the Borg. G-d have mercy on us all.

The Big Book of Canadian Ghost Stories by John Robert Colombo

1. Where did you get this book?

This book was sent to me by post.

2. How much did it cost?

There was no money exchanged but it did cost me one story contribution.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?

I started reading this book on January 1st of this year. The size of the book is masive. Difficult to put in your purse and not a book I enjoy bringing to bed with me. With my tiny hands it isn't fun trying to hold it up. It is the perfect book to sit on the sofa with but I haven't been sitting on the sofa much. Now that I am slowly getting settled in my new home I have promised to spend more time with this book.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?

I have had it on my shelf since Oct 2008

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?

I have read a few "Ghost Stories" but never a book with as many as this book has but I am really enjoying the stories that take place in the 1800"s and the old news paper articles.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?

It is much better than I thought it would be. The last book by this author is what inspired me to write a story but that book wasn't as good as this one.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?

I'm on page 221 of 511, so 290 pages to go.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what makes your book unique.

This book is a brand new book. Only a few hands have touched it. Never hit the book stores. I had emailed Mr. Colombo and required where my book was. I was suppose to get in by the end of September but didn't. When he got my email he paniced. He had promised that the my story would be in this book. He emailed me back saying that for some reason it wasn't and promised that it would be in his next book. I didn't see that email until after he called me on the phone. When I saw his name come up on my display I got nervous and excited. In a hurried voice he told me not to read the email that he just sent to me. He said that for some reason my name was kicked off the mailing list and my story was in this book.
He was sorry that I didn't get it sooner. He said that this must be my lucky day. He will post this book that day and it will be the only one that is going to be signed. None of his other contributors books were signed.
That is why it is special to me. On the inside cover he has written "This is a special copy for a special contributor".

PS...sorry about the long story.

It's short and on my 999 Challenge list

4. How long has it been on your shelf? Since January

5. So far, what do you like best about this book? The setting is an interesting one, a refugee camp in Lyon, France for Algerians.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be? I have neutral expectations. I want my interest held, and so far so good.

I am currently reading Eragon by Christopher Paolini.

1. Where did you get this book?
A friend of mine loaned it to me

2. How much did it cost?
Well, we swapped books for the week, but we'll eventually return them. So in the end, nothing. ;)

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
I have been urged to read this book for quite some time now, so I finally gave in.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
Since Saturday night

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
For all the reviews I have read about it not being original, I think it is. I can see where some people might get that impression, but I've enjoyed the unexpected turns it has been taking.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Actually, it is slightly worse. This is only because my aforementioned friend raved about it, making it seem greater than what I think it really is, which is actually making it even worse. If that makes sense. :/

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
I have 100 pages left, out of 497.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what makes your book unique.
My friend keeps her books in really good condition, however, due to her obsession, she has pasted photos of Eragon from the movie on every blank page. *rolls eyes* The nerve of some people...

"The Warrior Heir" by Cinda Williams Chima.
1. I got this at my local library, when the librarian recommened it to me.
2. It didn't cost anything- lol.
3. I wanted something simple, but good to read- since I am immensely immersed in college homework. I needed a breather, and it actually worked.
4. It's a libray book- so, it will only be on my shelf for another week, maybe less.
5. It is very interesting, simple, and a delicate touch of comedy, intellect, and story
6. Better, definitely. I usually do not trust modern day novels, they seem to dim the whole art of fiction- but some actually try to give the reader their best talents, like Ms. Chima.
7. I am finished- last night, i put the over 400 page book down for the last time(sigh)
8. It is good in a simple way.
Plus, it is part of a series. I think there are 2 or 3 more books in the series. I CAN't WAIT!

3000 Degrees by Sean Flynn
1. I got it at the county library
2. No cost
3. I had it on my Wishlist. Someone in my family used to live, briefly, in the city where it takes place. I was ready for a new non-fiction book. I was waiting while my son participated in a reding program at the library. I looked it up and started reading.
4. I started reading it at the library before I ever got it home -- so it never hit my bookshelf.
5. I like that it's a true story, that it's written in such a way that it really honors the brave firefighters who died in the blaze that is described in the book and lets the reader see what kind of human beings they were. It also explains a lot about firefighting.
6. It is a powerful book, even better than I thought it would be. (I really need to get back to my current fiction book and finish it, as it's due at the library tomorrow, but this one is hard to put down.)
7. I just started it this morning, and have already read 87 pages. That leaves 158 to go.
8. It's a library copy which has been handled well; no marks or damage.

edit: I don't know why the touchstone, which I included, didn't show up when this posted. It seemed to be OK when I wrote it. Maybe it will fix itself eventually?

Currently reading: Cat and Mouse by James Patterson

1. Where did you get this book?

Mysteryguild.com

2. How much did it cost?

Can't remember exactly, but I think it was $9.99

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?

I wanted a lazy read for when I went to the beach and I was in a mood for a good mystery. The next Alex Cross book seemed like a logical choice :P

4. How long has it been on your shelf?

Somewhere between six months and a year.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?

It has everything I've come to expect from Patterson: a quick pace, a frightening villian, and Alex Cross!

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?

It's about the same. James Patterson doesn't change his routine too much, which can be good and bad, depending on what you're in the mood for. When I decided to read this book, Patterson's mysteries were exactly what I wanted at the moment.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?

144/338 (I spent more time in the water than I did reading ;-P )

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.

It was new when I got it and there's nothing really unique about it except surprisingly, it's still in decent shape (usually, books get banged up pretty bad in my possession - I'm still not sure how I do it sometimes...)

I am reading The Confessions of Max Tivoli by Andrew Sean Greeg

1. Where did you get this book?
library

2. How much did it cost?
nothing

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
I found it on librarything and it sounded really interesting. The more I read of it the more it resembles The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (the movie with Brad Pitt and whats her name) but what it doesn't resemble is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button the short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald beyond the premise of a man aging backwards. I have done a bit of web research on the book and allegedly it has no connection to the movie whatsoever but the movie plot follows along with Max Tivoli sooo much that I am wondering if the movie people didn't rip off the book.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
I have had it in my giant library book pile that gets added to every few days, and I guess it sat there for maybe a week before I got to it.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
It's a book with a premise based on fantasy without being fantastical, if that makes any sense. At its core it is a book about human relationships and the emotional aspects, of love and pain, are very relateable even if the premise is not.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
better

Every so often in the book someone has underlined and starred in the book and I tried to understand what that someone was looking for. The parts that were underlined were parts where the main character was trying to come to grasps with his identity and I like to think that maybe this book has helped someone understand themselves just a little bit better and understand their identity...but perhaps that is just whimsy on my part :)

Am reading two new ones currently. (I started and finished a couple recently, that I was not able to enter here before I finished them.)

First off is Season of Migration to the North by Tayeb Salih that I picked out on Friday night.

1. Where did you get this book?
amazon after hearing abount it in a piece on NPR (National Public Radio)

2. How much did it cost?
Don't recall exactly, but I'm pretty sure I did not buy it new - say in the region of $5.00 or so.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
I've been wanting to read it since I heard about it, but I have this thing whereby I rarely, if ever, read a book as soon as I get it. On Friday it was just on the top of the stack I was fumbling around with.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
Since April 13, 2009

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
Salih has a curious way of writing that I only just noticed - on pages 29, 31 & 33 he ends a paragraph with the same sentence - "The train carried me to the station and to world of Jane Morris."

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
About as I hoped it would be

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
page 40 with 129 to go

8. If this was a used book tell us what makes your book unique.
I think this was used because there is a little bit of sticker glue on the upper right hand corner where I think there was a price tag I removed when I got it. I suppose the most noticeable thing about it is how pristine it is - a lot of my books were bought used and look it!

Which brings me to the next book -

Friday's Child by Georgette Heyer

1. Where did you get this book?
From Once Sold Tales through Amazon

2. How much did it cost?
$4.97

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW? Sitting right there in the front part of the bookcase where my hand fell on it.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
Since March 30, 2009

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
I can't say I'm loving it. Heyer's dedication to getting everything just right subjects one to way too much in the way of Regency English-isms. I say old man, it's dashed tedious! However, I am hoping, since this is my first Heyer that perhaps the others aren't quite so full of them.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Not as good as I had hoped.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
page 198 with 188 to go

8. If this was a used book tell us what makes your book unique.
This book once belonged to the Timberland Regional Library Service Center in Tumwater, WA (April 2007) and it was withdrawn - according the stamps on the title page and it's got other little library stickers and doo-dads on it. However the thing that makes it most unique is that it is missing the first two pages! Did not notice that when I got it. Only found out about it because I loaned it to a friend in June and she told me about it. Not to worry though - the pages can be read on Amazon.

Definitely don't give up on Georgette Heyer based on Fridays Child. I never cared much for that one either. Try The Grand Sophy or The Toll Gate, which are both very entertaining. Or check out other people's recommendations on the Almacks group (which is not very active).

I'm reading My Soul to Take: A Novel of Iceland by Yrsa Sigurdardottir

1. Where did you get this book?
From the Westborough MA Public Library

2. How much did it cost?
Nothing

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
I saw it on the new fiction shelf and decided it looked interesting: an atmospheric mystery set in Iceland.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
It's a two week book; so about one and a half weeks.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
The characters are very interesting and the mystery is good; many suspects. The setting is great.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
It is just what I hoped it would be.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
Page 242 with with 103 pages left to go.

8. If this was a used book tell us what makes your book unique.
It seems fairly new although I have found a few pages where the corners have been turned down to save someone's place--I never do this.

I'm reading To Kill a Mocking Bird

1. Where did you get this book?
Royal North Shore Hospital Aux. shop, Sydney

2. How much did it cost?
$2 secondhand
3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
Because somehow I have managed to get to 40 something without reading it!
I'm one of the few people it seems who didn't have it as set reading for school.
4. How long has it been on your shelf?
About a year and a half.
5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
The humour arising from misunderstanding on Scouts first day of school.
6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Better
7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
Page 45 with about 240 pages to go.
8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.
There is a stamp on the title page "Marcellin College Randwick"
On the inside back cover "Cousin I'm Steve Giles => Syntha Mitchell=>Lives Wyong =>Colon - Syd Divorced." Sounds a bit like someones life history :-)

ETA this edition was published in 1974, and the original price was $4.95 from William Collins Bookshop. Now in Australia the average price for a new novel can range from is about $25 dollars to $35 or more for more recent publications.
Also ETA a picture. A picture tells a thousand words ;-)

I'm currently reading two books that are both very good.

The Wild Hunt by Elizabeth Chadwick

1. I bought this book on-line through Chapters

2. I don't remember the actual cost, but probably about $12.00 Cdn.

3. I picked this book because I first picked up another historical fiction that I didn't like, so this was my second choice.

4. I've had this book since about November 2008.

5. What I like best about this book are the characters, especially the two main characters that have been forced into an arranged marriage and are trying to work together to get along. The story is moving along nicely.

6. So far I am liking this book a lot better than I thought I would. It's a nice light read which balances my other book perfectly.

7. I am currently on page 71 out of 341.

8. New book, nothing unique.

My second book is Desert Blood: The Juarez Murders by Alicia Gaspar De Alba

1. I got this one from the library

2. No cost.

3. This is kinda embarrasing, I have so many library books on my wish list that I couldn't decide what to order next - I just picked a letter of the alphabet and ordered a book by an author with that letter. (I made a mistake anyway, cause I thought her last name was De Alba and now I find out it's actually Gaspar de Alba)

4. I just brought this book home yesterday.

5. What I like best is that it is based on real murders that happened along the El Paso/Juarez border over a period of years, and she has researched extensively. The story-line is ok, I have found a few weak spots in her plot, but she is definitely getting the atmosphere regarding the politics and apathy that existed around these poor Mexican women who were being abducted.

6. It is neither better or worse that I expected - just very different. But definitely an enthralling read.

7. I am on page 122 out of 346.

8. No unique markings on this book.

2. How much did it cost?

2. How much did it cost?

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
It was assigned to me by lilyfirestorm in the Go Review That Book group

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
August 22, 2007

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
About what I had anticipated.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?

8. If this was a used book tell us what makes your book unique?
This is an ex-library book - the Free Public Library in Collingswood, NJ. It has not been kindly treated as the first 51 pages are pretty much mangled, with serious rips in them. Just under the dedication ("To my family because they once lived at Holly River") it has been inscribed - "And to Dorothea, who has been there often" and signed by the author. And on the inside cover Dorothea has apparently signed her name - D.W. Partch

I have moved on to Emma by Jane Austen.

1. Where did you get this book?
If I remember correctly, I bought it at a yard sale back in '00.

2. How much did it cost?
No clue... it was part of a stack of other things I grabbed ;)

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
The same way I pick most of my books (the occasional circumstance of someone forcing me to read a certain book being the reason I say most): I put ten random titles of books in a hat and draw. ;)

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
I think I mentioned something about the year 2000 earlier...

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
It's Austen--what's not to love?

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
I thought I would be just as frustrated with Emma in the book as I was with her in the movie, and based off of friends' reviews I expected it to be thick and difficult to get through--so far, I am right.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
I'm on page 192 with 195 left to go, so about half way.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.
Only a few dog-eared pages and the name "Kelsey Ann" on the title page. And let me just say, I envy Kelsey Ann's handwriting.

I just started reading Framing the Early Middle Ages by Chris Wickham.

1. Where did you get this book?
I bought it on holiday, at the huge Blackwell store in Oxford.

2. How much did it cost?
GBP 28

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW?
Because I have just gotten it, and wanted to read it immediately. I waited until I finished the book I was reading though.

4. How long has it been on your shelf?
About a week.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book?
That it was written by Chris Wickham, whose other work The inheritance of Rome (which he wrote after Framing) I loved. I love the structure, the clarity, and the wide range (geographically).

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
As good as I hoped.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
Page 58, and there are about 780 to go.

8. If this was a used book maybe someone has highlighted parts, written down their own name, it could have been given as a gift and written on it from and to someone, or maybe they just doodled in it. Tell us what make your book unique.
I got it new, but where and when I got it makes it unique for me. I have wanted it since reading Inheritance earlier this year, but thought it was too expensive (currently $54 at Amazon). So when I found it in the UK for GBP 28 I was so happy. But I didn't think I could get it because we were already pushing the weight limits for our airplane luggage. After a not so fun day in Oxford my boyfriend said I could get Framing anyway, and we'd figure out a way to get it home. And we did :D Yay!

Nice questions!
I'm reading Leven, een gebruiksaanwijzing (Life: a user's manual) by Georges Perec.
1. I got this book at the half price discount when our bookshop moved for renovation.

2. I paid around EUR 9.

3. I started reading in May, because I got interested anew when the dutch translation of La disparition (A Void) was published.

4. The book has been waiting to be picked up since the end of February.

5. I like that it is about a building and how it describes all the different rooms and people. Now I know where that French theme of appartment buildings and their inhabitants, often featuring in French books and films, comes from.

6. However, it is not as good as I expected. The first half is tough going. You don't know where the story is heading and there are so many characters to be introduced. Second half gets better, but it still feels gimmicky (if that is a proper English word).

7. I'm now on page 292, 232 to go.

8. The book is new, however I dogeared it somewhat. I took it with me on several outings.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Neither one nor the other

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?

Harriet's attitude. She was a woman of very strong opinions, and didn't mince words.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Better. I was expecting a run-of-the-mill memoir, but it is much more. Harriet says in the preface that she is a storyteller, and I can confirm that she was a very good one.

Just a couple of days ago I started The Outlander a novel by Gil Adamson a woman writer--not sure what Gil may be short for. I'm 70 pages into it and enjoying it.

In 1903 a young woman is fleeing across the west. She is both a widow and her husband's killer. So far, no details about how or why she killed him, though I suspect it will eventually be revealed that she acted in self defence.

I learned of the book in a blog called: Red Room Library. The review convinced me to try it.

I've recently discovered that if you find one blog devoted to books you open a whole world of blogs with the same focus simply by clicking on their "blogs I follow."
