Am reading Don't Look Now and Other Stories by Daphne Du Maurier now.

I got this book from the library. I've always loved supernatural stories or stories that had an element of suspense. I saw this book in a fellow LT members' library and knew I wanted to read it. I got it yesterday. So far I've read one and a half stories! And it is matching up to my expectations. So far it is as good as I thought it would be.

I am listening to an unabridged audio book of Persuasion by Jane Austen, read by Juliet Stephenson.

Where did you get this book?
I ordered it on-line.

How much did it cost?
I am trying not to think about that, thank you. I think I may have blown my entire book-buying budget for the month.

Why did you pick this to read now?
I've been too tired even to feel like reading, and needed a treat to cheer myself up.

How long has it been on your shelf?
Under 24 hours.

So far, what do you like best about this book?
Love the wit and the subtlety of the writing, and it is being read perfectly.

So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
Better. I expected it to be good and it's wonderful.

What page are you on? How many pages left to go?
I am on disc 6 of 9 and worrying about how quickly I am nearing the end.

What makes this unique?
It is brand new.

# 4 My first encounter with Persuasion came from the BBC program Off the Shelf. I had already read Pride and Prejudice and was a fan of Jane Austen. Off the Shelf was one of my favorite programs and one day they started reading an unabridged version Persuasion. And you know what? It was read by Juliet Stephenson! So, it seems like it's probably the same recording that you are listening to, puddleshark. Later on I bought the complete novels of Jane Austen and read it for myself. It was still as good as the first time. Now, Persuasion is my second favorite Austen novel (right after Pride and Prejudice).

I never tried any novels of Jane Austen on cd. I do personally love Persuasion. Some may think P&P more realistic because of how well people disguise their greed. I think Persuasion shows in some ways more true to life interactions between acqauintances. And that love letter and the wonderful ending tops it all off. I think I may read it again very soon.

The Terror by Dan Simmons

So far it is an interesting world this is lodged between our world and the world of magic. The main character is a strong woman trying to make a life for herself and her younger brothers.

It was a little slow at the start primarily because it took me a while to get into the new world and figure out what was happening.

I am at the 27% mark.

I am reading A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny in between the other book I am reading.

I don't really know. It looks used. The pages are starting to yellow.

The price on the book is $4.99. I don't know what I paid.

It is October! It has become a sort of tradition for a certain group of people to read a chapter a day in October. Each chapter is dated.

Probably a couple of years. I kept missing the start of October and it seemed wrong to read it any other time.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book? What don't you like about this book?
All I have read is the Prologue and Chapter 1 both of which are told by the watchdog who apparently just watches. Thus far the book is curious. I am tempted to read ahead but will try to restrain myself to get the proper impact.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
I really had no expectations. I have read many books by Zelazny. This one is definitely different than his usual style.

I am on page 6 and have 274 pages to go.

That is the same complaint I had with The Pillars of the Earth, which otherwise has a wonderfully fresh plot line. I found the endless descriptions of sex and naked women (or men wanting to see any women they see naked) quite tedious. I had mentioned this fact in my review of the book too.

Right now I'm reading The Hollow Man or The Three Coffins by John Dickson Carr.

I've borrowed this book from the library. Being a mystery buff, I’ve always wanted to read this book as it is considered to be the best locked room mystery ever written. One of my fellow mystery fans is always talking about John Dickson Carr’s works. That was another reason for picking up this book. So far it is living up to my expectations. I’ve finished reading the first two chapters of the book.

I am reading 'Tis, a Memoir by Frank McCourt.

I got this book from my little local library.

I picked this book as it is the sequel to Angelas's Ashes which I recently read and loved.

It had been on my shelf for only 3 days, which is the length of time it took me to read my previous library pick... The Sugar Queen.

So far what I love is the writing and the author himself as he makes me wish I could have met him. And of course I needed to learn more of his story after reading Angela's Ashes.

So far I'm disappointed in the direction the author's life has taken and that it is taking him so long to figure things out and find himself and his direction. I'm annoyed with him for drinking so much after what he went through with his alcoholic father. He spends way too much and time and money in bars, pubs and clubs even though he seems to be always broke.

I am on page 350. Only about 20 pages to go. I plan to get his Teacher Man from the library soon too.

It cost me 50P it is a hard back in excellent condition and retails for £16:99.

To get inside Audley's mind lol I have asked him to work with me and will ask him again. For those of you who don't know who he is, he is a British Heavy weight boxer and I believe if he got his head right he would become a world champion.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book? What don't you like about this book?
I like the mans brutal honesty he's story reinforces the link between poverty, crime and lack of education and hence opportunity in life.
Audley like most people from our backgroud had to do it all the hardway, he went onto get himself a degree from a redbrick university, helping to remove the sterotype that all boxers are obtuse. We are not, it takes fortitude and brains to get in the ring and out fox your opponent.
There is nothing I dislike about the book it resonates with me, because I have been there.
6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
When reading books in general I tend to put expectation to one side. I am happy to cast judgement on the book after I have read it. And then I only strive to offer positive criticsm.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go?
Page 73 at the start of chapter 4 titled aprops An all-round education.
The last page of the book is 245 so not to many left to devour.

I was racing to leave the house yesterday before work and knew I would finish the last few pages of the book I was currently reading. This one was in the bookcase closest to me and I knew it was on one of my Challenge lists. So, I grabbed it and ran out the door.

Since July 2, 2008 according to the entry date which is probably pretty accurate.

It is a pretty entertaining little tale. Kind of a take off of the "Beauty and the Beast" fairy tale, but I'm not entirely sure that the hero is actually beastly. His appearance is pretty ambiguous. I like how the author has made it a mystery.

I didn't really have any great expectations going in. I am enjoying the story so that's nice.

(I'm cheating a bit with this answer, as I've read the book before) I like the ambiguity of the text and the question left up in the air about the reliability of the narrator

Having read it before, it's about what I expected. A little better, perhaps, because I'm noticing more than I did the first time I read it (and remembering the lectures/discussions about it in class probably helps as well).

I like that it looks like it will be told from two viewpoints - the girl and the boy who is sometimes a wolf.

I'm reading ‘Under the Greenwood Tree’ by Thomas Hardy, Penguin Classics paperback.

1. Can't remember. I'm pretty sure I had it from a bookshop, as opposed to online (see 3. & 4.).

2. Can't remember, but it says £3-50 on the cover, so I assume this is what I paid.

3. & 4. This is one of the few Thomas Hardy novels I've never read, but I've always been intending to. I think I spotted it in a bookshop sometime, brought it home and put it in my shelves, then promptly forgot about it. So I've no idea how long I've had it. I spotted it again while cataloguing my books on LT and put it in a little pile of unread books I found at the same time, and I got down to it a few days ago.

5. I suppose that what I'm liking best about it is Hardy's prose. But I'm finding this book heavy going. The main protagonists, Dick and Fancy, are the most boring pair of dickheads and I want to throw rocks at them. Also, in my opinion, this edition has a singularly useless and irrelevant set of notes - there have been a number of instances where I could have done with some help with the language and mores of a hundred years ago.

6. Hardy is one of my favourite novelists, ('Far from the Madding Crowd' would be among my half-dozen all-time favourites every time) so I was quite expecting to enjoy this. It's a disappointment. Perhaps it will warm up in the second half.

I'm reading Zulu Hart by Saul David

1. I bought this book at Chapter's Bookstore in Langley, B.C.

2. I don't know for sure, but I suspect it was more than I thought I should have as I see I have picked off the price tag.

3. I picked this book to read now because I am working on the Alphabet Challenge and the title of this book starts with "Z".

4. Again not sure, but I think I bought this book early in the year.

5. What I like best about the book is that it is a great story, about the Zulu War in 1879, the massacre at Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift. My only complaint is that the main character is only 18 yet he seems to be the one who knows what everyone else should be doing.

6. Actually this book is far better than I thought it would be. The author is an historian so I thought the book would be very dry and full of facts, while he does impart much historical information, he is also delivering a great story.

I like the main character. She is a misfit in her family of witches. She has a major case of sibling rivalry with her "perfect" sister Rowena. She has already encountered two men -- a somewhat mysterious professor at NYC who wants her to find a missing family heirloom and a childhood friend that has now returned to the area.

It is good. I am getting involved in the story and want to know what happens next. The style is clear and readable.

I’ve started reading The Girl who Played with Fire. I have borrowed the first two parts of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy from a friend. I've finished the first one so I'm moving on to the second. Not because I loved the first book but because I’m trying to return these books as early as possible so that I can start on something else. 3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW? It was on my self and I've been meaning to get to it. So, why not now?

4. How long has it been on your shelf/home/table? Less than a year but more than 3 months.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book? What don't you like about this book? Ok, it's a bit predictable, you know the good guy is going to win. But, then, that's what I like about it. It pulls you right in the story and you end up cheering for the good guy to win.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be? It's better than I thought. I've been reading a lot of YA lit lately (trying to get out of my SciFi & Horror rut) and some of the YA stuff turns out to be very well written. The authors don't dumb it down and it makes the stories appealing to all age groups.

7. What page are you on NOW? How many pages left to go? Truthfully, I'm on page 324 which leaves me with about 9 pages to go. There are 333 pages.

I pre-ordered it on Sept. 18 and added it to my LibraryThing on Oct. 7.

I like the world. I like political fantasies. I like coming-of-age stories. This is that kind of book.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
It is as good as I thought it would be. It is similar in style to Graceling. The pace is rather slow, the language is rich, the conflicts are often internal rather than external. In this case the country is on the verge of war but the main focus is on Fire learning who she is and where she fits in her country.

I am on page 310 of 461.

I can recommend this for thoughtful YAs. It is not a light, fluffy read.

I've started on Murder is Easy by one of my favorite authors Agatha Christie. I picked this book up from a local bookstore. I read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl who Played with Fire back to back last week. Now I’m reading this to give me some respite from all those fast paced, action packed, ultra modern books. I'm going to savor this one and it should calm down my nerves! It has been on my shelf for about a week now. It is still too early to tell what I like or dislike about this book. But there are very few Agatha Christie books that I haven't liked. So, there is a fair chance that I'm going to like this one too. This is a brand new book and it's all mine!

#39 that youtube was really interesting. Ever read up on robotic lifeforms or the lefr of mechanic beings? I have to look it up,but there is this Scandinavian guy who follows these machines that move with the wind along beaches. Interesting how he defines life.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW? I had just finished Son: A Psychopath and His Victims by Jack Olsen, which is a creepy biography of Spokane rapist Kevin Coe. I wanted to read something more uplifting and "good for me" after that.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book? What don't you like about this book? I like the tone--humility and the intelligence without sugarcoating what could be viewed negatively by others. I've just started the book, so there isn't anything I don't like, except that I am already aware that it is kind of long and I generally don't care for long books.

Better. When I took a look at the authors included, I was a little disappointed that I'd only read books by a few, and thought that it might be a tad boring to read about authors I'd never read. But the first interview by Dorothy Parker was a hoot, and every interview since then has been equally wonderful, in different ways. (I can just see my TBR pile growing incrementally with each interview)

I am enjoying the idea of three young boys having the same birthday, being the best of friends, sharing secrets, staying connected after becoming men. The only part I am having a hard time with is the mention of sex. It isn't throughout the book but when it is mentioned it does go on just a tad too long.

I have to say better. Even though I was hooked when the owner of the book store was telling me about it. I don't normally enjoy Nora Roberts as much as I enjoy this book. I will definately have to buy the other two books in the series.

Almost done actually. I am on page 290 with only 32 pages left.

Recently I read a great novel based on the life of Ramanujan,the famous mathematician written by David Leavitt The title of the novel is The Indian Clerk It describes the life of Hardy and how he brought Ramanujan to Cambridge..If you have patience to read the first 100pages,the book will surely take you to the end .
I first saw the book in a mall at Santacruz The price was Rs500 I was not sure whether I would be able to read it so I didnt buy it there after 3/4months I happened to see the same bk in a raddishop where the man wanted Rs 150 I bought it at once At the most I would wast only that much if I couldnt read or didnt like it. But when yesterday I finished reading I felt very lucky to have got and read it.
i didnt understand the mathematical part but as a story of complex human relations. I fond it very absorbing,enriching and rewarding experience. I want everybody to read it.The publishers hv their website www.bloomsbury.com

I've been hearing about it on Laura Anne's blog and had it pre-ordered. It moved to the top of my list as soon as it arrived.

I added it to LibraryThing on Oct. 7.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book? What don't you like about this book?
I like the world that is being created. It looks to be a big political fantasy with an interesting system of magic.

It is a littler slower-paced than the books I have been reading. I am enjoying getting into the story. However, it is the first of a trilogy and I know I will be waiting for years for the rest.

I am on page 164 of 374.

I will likely be donating it to my HS Media Center after I finish it. I have lots of kids who like to read fantasies. I might as well spread the wealth while waiting for the rest of the trilogy. Also, donating it saves room on my crowded shelves for books I plan to read again. (If I want to read this one again. I can borrow it from my library.)

Gamow is explaining the very strange microscopic world through the eyes of a character called Mr Tompkins. Tompkins seems to be a bit of a daydreamer and his reveries take him into the subatomic world.

This is one of the best books I have read on quantum physics and I have read a fair few in my time.

I am reading Terence Frisby’s 'Kisses on a Postcard', a touching, and at times very funny account of him and his older brother Jack, aged seven and eleven, as WWII evacuees to the Cornish hamlet of Doublebois. There they lived for three years with ‘Uncle Jack’, a former Welsh miner with good old-Labour views, and his warm-hearted wife ‘Auntie Rose’. A charming, uplifting book.

Ever since I read Michael Jackson Conspiracy, a book which gives you a "fly on the wall" in the courtroom feel, I've been interested in reading up on more real-life court "drama." (Once upon a time I dreamed of being a paralegal and/or a court stenographer, so it's not too much of a stretch for me.) My library has a small section on law related books. The title of this one caught my attention, so I read the back cover and brought it home.

I checked this book, along with a few others, out a few weeks ago. I had brought home more "interesting" reads that I thought I would dive into first, but this one has proven itself a winner.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book? What don't you like about this book?
I like the judge the book is focusing on. He seems like a decent "stand up" kind of guy. However, there are some disturbing facts brought up here about how the court system works and who the people are that are caught up in it. There are some "wake up and smell the coffee" moments in here.

I put it on both my 999 Challenge under fantasy and my Paranormal 999 Challenge under witches and since I'm behind on both I thought I'd read one that can be knocked off both lists.

I'm pretty sure I've had it over a year. The computer I'm using is funky and I can no longer look at book pages to check.

The story has talking horses called "Fleet Ones" and I'm enjoying them. What bugs me about the story is that the author obviously leaned heavily on LoTR while writing. It really isn't a huge complaint for me, just a little irritating.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?

This was originally a self-published piece picked up by Amber Quill Press after receiving an EPPIE Award (self-publishing award). So, I wasn't entirely sure how it would be but I've been pleasantly surprised so far. It has been a pretty entertaining tween fantasy story.

I'm on page 157 of 214.

I just finished reading The Cathars by Sean Martin and wanted to read a novel along the same theme.

I just read the prologue which describes the fall of Jerusalem to the Saracens. Two templars are instructed to flee with something in a chest it might be the grail. :)

Its to early to say I am about to start chapter one. The prologue was pretty graphic i felt like I was really there.

Right now I'm reading The Playboy of the Western World by J. M. Synge.

Somebody recommended it on the science fiction thread of the FantasyForum group. It sounded interesting so I requested it from the library even though my tbr pile is threatening to overwhelm me. I have no self control.

It sat for about three days while I finished what I was reading at the time.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book? What don't you like about this book?
I like the characters and the world building. The fact that it is holding my attention and interest is wonderful. My only quibble is the standard science-fictionany made up words for some things and the way the author uses a few different names for the same character. In the narration his last name is used and when being addressed by other characters it is either his first name or nickname.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be?
I'm never sure if I'll be able to follow a story. Sometimes I think my reading preferences are dumbing down as I get older and then I find a book like this with a relatively complex plot and it makes me happy that it holds my interest. I guess that makes it better than I thought it might be.

The interesting old stories and woodcut prints that are part of this old book made for children of that date and the really neat old advertising. Plus the beautiful chromolithograph color pictures.

I am almost finished with A FRIEND OF THE FAMILY and I think it's brilliant. I don't want it to end. It cost me nothing since I'm a book critic and it just fell into my mail slot. Also, it's by my publisher, so I'm biased!

I picked it to read because the first page grabbed me, which is always my litmus test. (Though a frilly cover will turn me off.)

It's been on my shelf for only a few days before I picked it up.

What I love is the characters--real, thorny, unpredictable. There really is nothing I am unhappy with.

It's even better than I expected. I had seen reviews about it.

I have four pages left! Ack! I should be reading!

It's really a great book, about a father so obsessed with his grown son that he comes unhinged when his son starts up a relationship with a neighbor's daughter, who years ago, when she was a teenager was accused of killing her baby.

Nothing too exciting just a regular audio book

I am reading a couple of books but one of them The Coffin Trail by Martin Edwards is really a stand-out book.

1. I picked this book because I saw it touted here on LT. It's the first in a series of three (so far) and I ordered all three.

2. The book is marked $14.95 which is about what I paid. More than I usually pay for ordered books, but I really wanted it.

3. I picked this book now because I was in the mood for a good mystery and it fits in with my Alphabet Challenge.

4. I think its been on my TBR shelves since last spring.

5. What I like best so far is firstly that it is set in the Lake District of England, and I haven't read many mysteries about that area. The story is good, an intriguing investigation of a cold case told from two different perspectives, well written and nicely plotted to hold my interest.

6. The Coffin Trail is about what I hoped for. I had high expectations for this book and it's living up to them.

7. I am on page 112 with 174 pages left.

8. Brand new book with no distinguishing marks, stains or folds.

The idea of a town being inside a dome a watching and wondering who will be the heros and villians.

I use to read King quite often years ago. Just got tired of him. He tended to drone on for long periods in his books and nothing happening. But this book although long (1000 plus pages) does not suffer from those problems.
So to get to the point I find it much better than I was expecting. In fact I'm pleasently surprized.

#74 Reading The Woman in White for the first time. How I envy you! I know it's a little difficult to begin with (like most classics are). But hang on! It's definitely worth it.

#75 Wilkie Collins wrote another mystery/suspense novel, The Moonstone. That one is more like a traditional mystery novel, while The Woman in White has more of a psychological angle to it. They are both good, but I'm slightly partial to The Moonstone.

Sorry for all the unsolicited advice but I really loved reading these books. Just had to share it with everyone! :-)

# 72...I do recall reading one other about 6 years ago. That was before I saw the series on the television. I am enjoying this one so much more thinking of the charaters that I am familier with now. I should read more of Poirot.

#78 I'm a puritan when it comes to literature as in I tend to avoid TV/movie adaptations of books. I've seen one or two episodes of the Suchet version of Poirot and it is one of the better ones. But of course nothing is better than the books. I hope you read more of them.

I could never be a page folder

Currently, I'm mainly reading two books: Dewey by Vicki Myron and Three to Get Deadly by Janet Evanovich. The first caught my eye in Wal-Mart when it first came out. The sweet looking kitten staring out at me made me pick up the book, and the description made me buy it. The second is the third book in the Stephanie Plum series, which I happened upon Plum Lucky in the bookstore's clearance shelf, and was hooked.

1. Where did you get this book? Funny story on Dewey... I couldn't find my copy anywhere on Mt. TBR, so the one I'm reading came from the library. The Plum book came from BookMooch.

2. How much did it cost you? What is the price on the book? My copy of Dewey was around $12 or so, and I'm sure the price was on the book... but the library's copy didn't cost me anything, and neither did my Plum book.

3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW? Good question :-) Well, I picked Dewey to read now partly because it's short and I'm trying to meet my 75-book goal for the year, and partly because I wanted something warm and fluffy and meaningful to read. With the Plum book, it's been a while and I missed Stephanie and Lula and Gramma Mazur, especially.

4. How long has it been on your shelf/home/table? Dewey's been there for a little over a year, and it's probably the same for Plum.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book? What don't you like about this book? I love Myron's descriptions of small-town life (I live in a small-town myself) and the history of libraries and what they mean to people. I don't like that the cat's going to die, or that some butthead would shove a kitten in a library drop box and wedge the slot open for added cruelty on the coldest night of the year. With the Plum book, I love the humor and Lula always wanting to "bust a cap" in someone, but don't like that it can drag from time to time. It's the third book, and Evanovich didn't have all the kinks and relationships quite ironed out yet.

6. So far, is it better or worse than you thought it would be? Dewey has been surprising and better than I thought, it has more personal things in it and a Seabiscuit-hard-times feel to it. Three to Get Deadly isn't quite as good as I remembered, but still good.

I also found an audio version and I've found that listening is a perfect way to deal with even a brief commute. It is one of titles in The New Lifetime Reading Plan, and I am reading from that.

5. So far, what do you like best about this book? What don't you like about this book? The psychological and spiritual twists and turns. It reads just like Crime and Punishment. The characters are unsavory but great.

I like that it gets me thinking about some things I'd never given much thought--the specific siege of Sarajevo and the general thought of what it would be like to keep living one's life during such a siege.

This book has my friends name inside the cover. It is in good condition except for the binding. My friend cracks the binding as soon as she gets her book. Ouch. I could never do that to a book.

Dislike- This book is set in a sort of altverse and some of the slang they use if a bit confusing but she did put a glossary in the back so that helps!

#3. After the epic Under the Dome, I needed to give my mind a rest. So after looking in my TBR pile I discovered this book.

#4. About two years

#5. In 1955 Jan De Hartog was an author of some repute of books about sailors and the sea, a young boy after reading one of his books decided that he wanted to go to sea and wrote him to ask his advice on the subject. This book is the resault of that request. Each chapter covers a different subject, packing, seasickness, homesickness, passengers, ships routine ect..
Although I wasn't in the Merchant Marine, I did spend 8 years in the Navy, so far the advice he gave to this boy (twenty years before I enlisted) held true was and well founded when I was in, and I think is still good today.
