hello to jdholiday
you are so nice to come chat with me! Everyone should check out Red River Writers on Blog Talk Radio because this show helps all writers to get noticed. I thank Librarything for giving writers the opportunity to post their books. I also thank Abby Blanchly and all librarians for their love of books. Libraries have been experiencing budget cuts lately and many librarians are affected. I have written many letters here in NYC to the Mayor and councilman to restore Saturday hours to the library and to re-hire much needed librarians. I hope to talk more about my book and new writing career at age 63. I would also like to share publishing experiences with anyone who wants to chat with me!

I'm an author and head of a publishing company. One thing I've noticed lately (the past several months) is books aren't selling as much as they were last year.

I have two relatively new novels out, a mystery/suspense and an young adult.

Midnight Hours is about an Internet predator who targets disabled men. She promises them love and gives them death.

Prairie Dog Cowboy is a young adult adventure/historical novel about a boy who grows up in No Man's Land, which becomes the Oklahoma Panhandle. His experiences as a farm boy helping with his parents' homestead, a cowboy, and a horse breaker are based on reality.

hello Vangie.
I welcome you to my Author Chat. Please tell the readers something about yourself!
I am a poetry teacher from Brooklyn NY. I write books of poetry
and silly children's books that keep ME young. How about you?
Tell us about your books! I started writing in 2001 because of The World Trade Center tragedy and have been writing ever since.

Can you tell us your views on the future of the library?
Writers, Books and Libraries go together. The library has always
been a safe place for children and senior citizens. Now, many of the libraries have short hours and no Saturday hours.

Please write again. Feel free to post your questions about any of the above. Or come up with some of your own.

Out 29, 2009, 2:52pm (topo)Mensagem 14: CampusCoed07

Hi JD Holiday
My storyline for my Silly Kitty children's book came as a result of a real cat who lived on the campus of my college Brooklyn College}
This cat seemed homeless. Students fed her. She would bask in the sunshine and no one could chase her away.
How about you? Do you have a children's you would like to mention?
I have a great love for the libraries and highest respect for librarians. Yet, budget cuts continue to take away priceless
hours for children & senior citizens to visit the library.
My poetry book is now in the library catalog. I consider that the greatest honor a writer can have.
Tell us more about yourself!

Vivian, you are so right! And the decline of book sales affect all local book stores. Here in NYC, two Barnes & Noble stores actually closed up! They said too many people read books in the store's cafe and then put the book back on the shelf....instead of buying the book and taking it home with them. how do you feel about that issue?
Tell us how you got into the publishing business. Is your business self-publishing or traditional? Please list a link to your publishing house so our readers can contact you.
Right now, there seems to be a book war between, Walmart, Targets and Amazon. Prices are now very low. Do you think this will last long? However, it is now a good time for our readers to look on these websites to find a good book to add to their bookshelf.
I encourage readers to get in touch with Ms. Zabel. And I hope to hear from all librarything members. What a wonderplace to be!

Hi Irene,
Thank you for asking about my book. Yes, I have a children's picture book I wrote and illustrated myself called, JANOOSE THE GOOSE. In the book, Janoose the Goose likes life in the barnyard where she is visiting her cousin, Molly Duck and her baby, DeeDee. Her vacation is over and Janoose must go home because there are no job openings on the farm.
When her flight home arrives, the fox has begun a crime spree. Though the farm animals had a farm watch program once, they were no good at it! Janoose is the only one who can stop him.
Thanks Irene

Hello Irene. I enjoy your poetry both having read your book and having had the opportunity to watch you recite some of it via the internet. I am the author of one poetry book, "Life's Pages" and my second book hopefully will be out by years end. I read a lot of poetry as I travel from state to state driving a semi. I try to write daily as well. It has been a joy corresponding with you the last couple months and I look forward to the future.

My name is Vangie Williams, soccer/softball/whatever mother of 6 wonderful daughters, avid reader and writer, full time student at Strayer University (graduating in March 2010), Master Project Scheduler with SAIC, and fullime top Realtor. Nope not busy at all. I am sort of an over achiever.

It would be my pleasure to share a little about my new novel.

Broken Life - A Fight for Forever is a romantic tale of steamy passion and boiling fervor, which also wraps itself in the arms of virtually unexplored history. Moreover, this zeal-filled story crosses time, racial, cultural lines as well as the vast Atlantic. From generation to generation, a special lineage of rare love is interrupted, entwined lives are broken, and fragile dreams are shattered because of an unrelenting curse rooted in the motherland.

Broken Life-A Fight for Forever, Book 1 is about Marguerite, the third woman in Bethel's dreams, who writes a stirring entry in the journal that her deceased mother left. Bethel's dreams are so vivid that she is a shadow watching the past in the future. Bethel is but an observer of the past as Marguerite travels from New York, through the volatile south, and then back to France. The rigorous fight to break the curse's menacing grip steadily climaxes as young Bethel gains wisdom through her visions as well as the truths spoken from her father's reluctant tongue...and then there's the wooden box...a treasured but mysterious heirloom, which connects Bethel to both the curse and to her ancestors. Upon possessing the box, she discovers the nearly elusive path to victory through the journals marked by each of the women of her bloodline. Through a series of visions, which first take her to the mid 1844's, Bethel sees the way...to win the fight for forever.

This blog is great. I have a few questions.

If you self published; is your book sold at Borders and Barnes and Noble?

If you are with a publisher, how did you get signed?

Do you have a sample media kit / bio / agent request letter?

If you have an agent, did you get recommended or did you solicit a million before you signed on? Do you recommend a great agent?

Thank you to David, Roy and Vangie and yes, I am currently reading Vangie Williams book Broken life - A fight for forever, part one. And Vangie and i are planning to interview each other on facebook. I also read David's book Life's Pages
I would like to encourage David and Vangie to offer advice to new writers.
I do not have an agent. I do have a marketing coach from Outskirts Press and a muse from Fordham University. But the bulk of my inspiration came from my Poetry Teacher, Matthew Burgess I also have a publicity release from outskirts press and from Cambridge Who's Who.
My book is self published by Outskirts Press and is available on all major book sites. It can be also ordered at Borders book store and Barnes & Noble stores. I consider this to be a miracle and I thank God every day.
I also have a children's book that started out as a poem.
And I would like to say that if you enjoy chatting with me, you
should also enjoy writing to Susie Sexton see Message 27 for her link. She is a role model for all woman over age 40 who want to pursue a career.

Hi Irene,

Writing comes somewhat naturally to me. It has become one way for me to unwind after 500 or 600 miles chasing pavement everyday. Usually I read for a little while before letting the pen jut across the page to where ever it decides to go, I don't generally sit at the computer writing. I use timed writing exercises every now and then to become comfortable allowing thoughts to manifest but mostly I just begin a poem with two or three words and go from there. It goes where it wants to and it's done when it's done. I have been writing this way for twenty years.

Publishing has been a new experience, one that has taught me many things about writing. I am self-published with iUniverse and am in production with my second book of poetry with them as well. In the publishing process, the editing is probably the most time consuming and tedious part of the process. In the end though, it's all worth it. It is also a time to begin with marketing as far as finding various communities, such as this, to become active in. Authors tend to read a lot of books, and they will also help tremendously in the promotions of your work.

I would just encourage new writers to not be afraid of what is sitting on the page when the pen calms down. Sometimes it's not always what you thought it would be when you began, but at others, it is more than you ever may have dreamt it. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's not, but niether should be a reason not to keep writing.

welcome to David Gluck and Fran lewis. how nice of you to join in and introduce yourself & your work. i hope the readers on librarything will ask questions about what inspires a writer to put a book together. Writers must help writers, we learn from each others experiences. I know because i have only been writing since 2001, and only because of a tragedy. That is why I now write children's books. But I have not forgotten that day i began to write, and how it changed my life for the better. However, life does go on!

I hope all of these messages inspired some readers to ask questions. I would like to know what they are reading!
lately, there has been a vampire craze, and an old vampire soap opera is returning to the silver screen thanks to Johnny Depp.
In my book, I pay tribute to this soap opera: DARK SHADOWS
and its resident vampire, BARNABAS COLLINS.
If any readers or fellow librarything members remember this show, please drop by and leave a message. I would like to talk about the show with you and the fact that there were many paperback books about the show written by marilyn ross, who turned out to be a pen-name. The real writer was a MAN who did not want anyone to know he was writing about gothic soap operas.
He thought his friends would laugh at him. So he used his wife's name.

My poetry book will be one year old on November 25th. It feels like so much longer because i spent a total of 5 years putting all the poems together, re-writing them many times, showing them to my professors at my college, where i was a undergraduate student who was older than the rest. I returned to college at age 55 and many of my professors were younger than me.
99% of my classmates were approximately 18 - 21 years old.
It took 5 years to write my book, and to graduate in 2007 from Brooklyn College City University of New York with a BA in Philosophy with a minor in English. Eight of my classes were writing classes.
My book has two poems about my graduation day and one of them was published in the 2007 Graduation Year Book!

And there are local coffee cafe's that will let you have a poetry recital at their location. Dont be shy. Just ask!

Hello CAmpusCoed07! Thanks for inviting me over for a chat. I am so busy in that wonderful way that a writer is busy. I started writing my novel for NaNoWriMo and I am reading "People of the Book" by Geraldine Brooks for an LT reading group.
I really enjoyed reading your book of poetry and if anybody cares to read my review it is with the rest of my book reviews. I think it is very brave and must be so fulfilling to have the confidence in your writing that you do. So many people give up when their family doesn't need them as much anymore, but like you I feel that the more time I have on my hands the more I can read and write. All I have learned goes into my writing, and that is what I saw in your poetry. It spoke of memories that have never left you and also touched on how you see the world today. The story I am writing involves a girl and her grandmother because it is based on the close relationship I have with my mother-in-law. Real life always affects how we write, I think, for better or worse. How do you feel about that, Irene?

I am so glad to hear from you! I feel that no matter how highly educated or well-traveled we may be, we are "where we came from! " They can take me out of Brooklyn, but they can't take brooklyn out of me!!!
Yes, mmignano, I agree that our real life experiences since childhood follows us, embraces us, and never goes away. Our relationships with parents, grandparents & siblings move on with us into adulthood. It is highly reflected in all that we write....like a mirror into our souls. That is why so many people are now writing memoirs!
I think it is wonderful that you have a good relationship with your mother-in-law! It shows how gracious and kind you are.
I am proud to have you on my Author Chat!
love always, irene brodsky

Hi Irene,

I apologize for the delay in replying. No, I've never been to the Catskills, but I very much enjoyed Jean Craighead George's My Side of the Mountain when I was a child, which takes place there if I remember. "Little Women" and "Gone With the Wind" were two of my childhood favorites, too.

It is strange how state parks' once high tourism rates seem to have diminished. My family used to visit Lake Barkley in Kentucky, and the last time my mother and I went there, hardly anyone was there. A really sad finding.

Cheers,

Erin

hello Erin
i would tell any writer to visit places of natural beauty to be inspired by the wonder of it all.
Wordsworth & Whitman loved the outdoors scenery, and animal life. I was very inspired by that style of writing, the metaphors that were used to express one's real feelings, etc. My love for the catskills is due to the 20 years I visited Ellenville, Monticello,
Wurtsboro, central valley, middletown and liberty. Especially during the Autumn changing of foliage. You could write endlessly about the breathtaking mountains, every variety of trees and
spectacular lakes.
i enjoy hearing from you! thank you for writing to me
