I borrowed a novel from the library a while back and I wanted to read it again, but I can't remember the author or the title...doh!
It was set in the 17th century in London I think, and the protagonist was a London bookseller who wanted the quiet life but received a letter from a mysterious woman who lived in a decaying mansion and wanted him to sort out her occult library.. (yes its a good plot).
There were interlaced chapters about smugglers etc..

The author is a male, either British or Irish, moderately well known.. I think the book was written within the last 20 years.
He may be called Patrick sth, or Alexander sth, just can't remember...
