Blake Bailey, author of Cheever: A Life (Abril 7 às 19:00)
“Riveting from page one”, hails Booklist about Blake Bailey’s Cheever: A Life, calling it “the literary biography of the season.” A front page New York Times Book Review, calls Blake Bailey’s work a “stunningly detailed biography, exploring step by stumbling step the crooked path that Cheever ... (mais)followed….” John Cheever was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and National Medal of Honor. But who was John Cheever, and why has his life and work eluded biographers for so long? Blake Bailey is the first biographer to be granted unprecedented access to Cheever’s primary sources, including his massive journal, of which only a fraction has ever been published.
Bailey portrays Cheever as a writer in conflict: a proud Yankee who told tales of his lineage while deploring the stifling provincialism of his family circle; a dire alcoholic who recovered to write what some consider his greatest work, Falconer; a bisexual who concealed his true sexual desires. We learn about Cheever’s rivalry with J.D. Salinger, his troubled relationship with his daughter, and his ongoing struggle with alcoholism that nearly cost him his life.Blake Bailey is the editor of a two-volume edition of Cheever’s work, published in 2009 by The Library of America. His last book, A Tragic Honesty, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. He received a Guggenheim fellowship in 2005, and his articles and reviews have appeared in Slate, The New York Times, the New York Observer, and elsewhere. Discussion and Book Signing: Tuesday, April 7 at 7 p.m.

David Carr discusses and signs The Night of the Gun (Junho 16 às 19:00)
David Carr.
DIESEL, A Bookstore in Oakland is pleased to welcome David Carr as he discusses and signs The Night of the Gun: A Reporter investigates the Darkest Story of His Life. His Own.
"There may be no memoirist who has more skillfully used journalistic tools to reconstruct his own life than New York Times media ... (mais)columnist David Carr in his remarkable and harrowing book, The Night of the Gun....A."
-- Jennifer Reese, Entertainment Weekly
"The Night of the Gun is in part a writerly exercise in defense and disarmament--memoir in the throes of an existential crisis. But that does not prevent it from being a great read. This is largely because, in using his reporter's chops to investigate his own past, Carr taps the very skills that propelled him to survive. His method, as much as his madness, is the story."
-- Time "The Night of the Gun is about as dark and murky as dark and murky get. And though it is one of the most eloquent accounts of the seduction and snare of addiction, what's gotten lost in the water-cooler discussion about Carr's misadventures -- including drug peddling as well as his bout with cancer -- is that this book, in its sharp, serrated prose, is a meditation on how memory works (but mostly how it doesn't), a man's obsessive effort to get at his life's true narrative using the skills he's honed as a reporter, the one piece of his life that didn't combust."
-- George Lynell, L.A. Times

DIESEL, A Bookstore in Brentwood is pleased to have local author Dylan Landis as she discusses and signs Normal People Don't Live Like This. This event is free and all are welcome! Normal People Don't Live Like This will be published Sept. 8 by Persea Books. It is a debut collection of ten linked stories—praised ... (mais)by Janet Fitch, Elizabeth Strout and Lisa Glatt— about the hidden lives of a teenager and her mother, and how they struggle to negotiate emotional damage and open themselves to love. The girl, Leah, yearns for belonging and worships the most delinquent girls at school, while her mother, Helen, secretly rents a welfare hotel room that she obsessively decorates. The stories – quirky and darkly humorous -- mostly center on Leah, but they're also about the disturbing, sometimes transformative lives of the girls and women she knows. These stories have appeared in anthologies such as Do Me: Tales of Sex & Love from Tin House; Best American Nonrequired Reading 2003; Women on the Edge: Writing from Los Angeles; and Bestial Noise: The Tin House Fiction Reader, among others, and in literary magazines such as Tin House, Bomb, the Santa Monica Review and others. Holly Robinson here with Gerbil Farmer's Daughter (Novembro 14 às 11:00)
Come meet Holly Robinson with her book "Grebil Farmers Daughter". Journalist Robinson cheerfully recalls growing up with a closeted gerbil-breeder. The author's father was a captain in the Navy, a war veteran and an academy professor. He also raised gerbils, as a hedge against future income needs and ... (mais)because he believed, as lab animals, they contributed to the common good. Because Navy officials would have frowned upon this strange sideline business, he had to keep it a secret until retirement, when his initial stash of eight "tiny, caffeinated kangaroos" reached a rotating population of nearly 9,000. Robinson presents a colorful cast of characters: her dad the "Gerbil Czar," her acid-tongued mother, the standard-issue feckless younger brother, a cute but mischievous little sister and a too-smart-for-his-own-good youngest brother. It's a scenario that could have been lifted from a 1960s sitcom, but Robinson invests the narrative with pathos, good-natured moments of absurdity and plenty of keen humor.

Dickens event with Gerald Charles Dickens! (Dezembro 13 às 13:00)
Gerald Charles Dickens em turné por A Christmas Carol.
On Sunday, December 13th, the Moravian Book Shop presents Gerald Charles Dickens -- great, great grandson of Charles Dickens -- in two amazing performances of A Christmas Carol before he returns to England! Mr. Dickens is in the U.S. for a tour that will take him to seven states from New England to the ... (mais)Mid-Atlantic for the first time since 2005. His last stop will be here in Bethlehem for just two performances -- 1pm and 5pm. In the 1800s, it was quite common for authors to read abridged versions of their stories before audiences. These readings could become quite animated, with the author acting out many of the parts. Charles Dickens was particularly famous for his readings and would often receive standing ovations upon their completion. When Gerald, an actor and producer from Oxford, England, was asked to put together a performance for the 150th anniversary of A Christmas Carol, he created his first theatrical performance inspired by Charles' own entertaining readings of the 1860s. During his energetic one-man show, Gerald Dickens brings A Christmas Carol to life, depicting 26 characters of the classic tale, with just a table, wing chair, and hat rack accompanying him on stage. He has created different postures and voices for each character, achieving this so adeptly that the audience has no doubt about "who is who", so to speak. After each performance, Mr. Dickens will be at the Moravian Book Shop for photographs and to sign Byers' Choice Carolers and selected books written by his great, great grandfather. Due to time constraints, Mr. Dickens will only sign books and merchandise purchased at the Moravian Book Shop. Don't miss the unique opportunity to see this extraordinary performance by Dickens' great, great grandson! Tickets are only $20 in advance, and $22 at the door. Call us today at 610-866-5481 and ask for DICKENS EVENT to purchase your tickets, or email ljg@moravianbookshop.com for more information!
