[edit] For Readers

[edit] What should I ask?

Whatever you want! A good warm-up question, that provide fodder for more discussion like asking about the author's motivation for writing their books, helps. Check previous author chats for ideas.

[edit] For Authors

[edit] How does it work?

There is one thread for each author. Readers ask questions, and the author responds to them. The chat usually happens over a two-week period. The author may not answer right away - have patience. Check out previous author chats for an idea on how it goes.

[edit] How do I sign up for an author chat?

You need to:

  1. have a LibraryThing account.
  2. have a two week span where you're able to access the Internet every day or two.
  3. email abby@librarything.com with your username and possible time periods.

[edit] What kind of promotion comes with this?

We contact some (if not all) of the LibraryThing members who have in their library any book written by the author.

[edit] How much of a time commitment is it?

This partly depends on how active the chat is. Generally, you just want to check in every day or two, and respond to questions from people.

[edit] How can I make my chat successful?

You can make sure that you're checking in regularly so that readers have plenty of chances to respond to your answers and ask more questions. You can post some information that will inspire more questions. You might also check and see how many people have copies of your book. You can check this by going to your author page.
