Ideas for Elementary Through High School
Choose "Cover" view and let students print a poster view of their book covers. Print one per semester, in color, and use this as the cover for the books section of their portfolios.
Show students how to edit their view style and include "Date Started" and/or "Date Read" as one of the categories that show up when viewing "Your Books."
Print individual student library pages, with their short book comments and dates included. Students enjoy having a more professional presentation of their books, with less writing required for comments than the traditional book report.
Customize collections so that students create a new collection for each semester or year. Then when printing updates, only the current collection need be printed, allowing for updates to the portfolio to be additive.
It would be helpful for classrooms if "Lexile" was a view style category that could be turned on or off and automatically updated. Many students are using Lexiles as a piece of information to help them choose books at an appropriate level of readability. Other students are being restricted by Lexiles. Students who had access to this information could become empowered to use the information to help with choosing, and to help with explaining their choices no matter where they find themselves on the spectrum of adult support.
