76. The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. This didn't grab me as much as I hoped it would, but I finished it, so I'm adding it to my list.

... And, of course, it was completely and utterly inexplicable to me why some (maybe we shouldn't go there) didn't appreciate The Thirteenth Tale to the same extent I did. As msf59 said in message #121, don't give up! What matters is that we form our own opinions. I try not to be too terrribly ...

... lot of wonderful books for me. Work kicked my butt for much of the year. I'd say my favorite was either Handling Sin or The Thirteenth Tale.

... this year after reading The Glass Castle and hope Santa brings me her latest novel for Christmas. Also, after reading The Thirteenth Tale this year, I'm hoping Diane Setterfield will have something new for readers soon.

#52 The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield This is a quick, easy read that I got into really quickly. I enjoyed the mysterious mood of the book and was having fun reading til the end of the book came. I just didn't find the ending very believable or satisfying. Kind of disappointing. It ...

... them for my library book club. I've also done a fair amount of re-reading. My three favorite new books so far have been: The Thirteenth Tale Handling Sin Mystic River I've just begun War and Peace, which I expect to join the list, but I don't know if I'll finish it this year.

... it a lot though. It's almost like a combination of what Lost by Gregory Maguire could have been were it any good, and The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. I recommend it, but you should probably have more will-power than me and wait until it comes out in paperback :-)

I'm reading The Thirteenth Tale, which is not quite what I was expecting, but still very engrossing so far.

... know what you mean, I was doing that too. A few friends and I started up a book club last month and I read our first book (The Thirteenth Tale) with a pad of paper and pen by my side the whole time, first time I've done that with a novel since high school! It's worth it, though, I feel like I ...

... it, for the most part (I'm not a fan of Hanna or her mother, especially now that I've finished it). I highly recommend The Thirteenth Tale, I'd think you'd enjoy it and this is the perfect time of year for it. When it gets cold, dark, windy, and rainy out, just cozy up with that book and ...

>66 ooh...I LOVED The Thirteenth Tale - one of my absolute favorites last year (or the year before?). I'll have to read it again and see if I can catch those references, spacepotatoes. I hope you won't completely drop The Woman in White on my account. It struck me as the type of book I might ...

Well, The Woman in White, The Thirteenth Tale and Special Topics in Calamity Physics are all on my shelves waiting to be read, so it sounds like I'm in for a treat! Maybe not all at once though... ;-)

... Just discovered I double posted, so will respond to Ellie below: I predict you'll love Special Topics... and enjoy The Thirteenth Tale--or maybe it will be the other way around? How's that for a wishy-washy prediction?

I just finished The Thirteenth Tale, which made so many references to The Woman in White that I really wanted to read it. I don't like it when narrators draw something simple out for much longer than necessary, though, so I'm wavering a bit. It still sounds interesting but I don't think I'll be ...

As for The Thirteenth Tale, I am still waiting to read that one and I have heard really good things about it as well, so I am looking forward to that read. Again, congrats on the ...

... people who open my eyes to other viewpoints can trigger discomfort that I "fell" for the story. It does seem unusual that The Thirteenth Tale made you uncomfortable after reading it, although you enjoyed it. Of course, that is probably my favorite book of 2009, so I'm a bit biased.

>#158 Catreona: Could you please elaborate on what you mean by The Thirteenth Tale leaving a peculiar aftertaste in your mind? I'm puzzled.... I abandoned The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao despite wanting to finish it for my RL book club. I was looking forward to the group's comments and ...

I would recommend The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and The Thirteenth Tale in the audio version. I also liked Pillars of the Earth but you have to have 40 hours to listen (I was driving a lot). I hated Twilight and Dark Slayer on audio. The Nora Robert's books are ...

... a nosedive. I may not get to 50 after all. Ah well, this year will still be the closest I've gotten! Oh, I finished The Thirteenth Tale today and it was so very, very good! The perfect read for this time of year. Now it's onto finishing up People of the Book. I will try to get caught ...

... Mark! Looking forward to seeing your thoughts there too! It was a great choice, and kind of funny that I actually voted for The Thirteenth Tale when the GR was being organized but was outnumbered. It all worked out for the best :)

Hey Space- Funny, The Thirteenth Tale was our 2nd choice for a group read, of course we went with "People". I'll have to read the Setterfield book one of these days. BTW, thanks for contributing such good insights to the G.R.

... it wasn't that great. I'm currently alternating between People of the Book for the group read, which has been great, and The Thirteenth Tale for a new book club that some friends and I put together. The Thirteenth Tale is also very good so far, though it's not turning out anything like I ...

... you are the one who suggested People of the Book. It was on your TBR pile and you thought it might work. You also had The Thirteenth Tale waiting in the wings. We put it out there for a vote. So I guess "the people" actually choose the book. How about that? Some things are just magical. ...

JenSay in Book talk : Autumnal Lit (Out 26, 2009, 2:06pm)

I always find The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield to be the perfect read for those chilly autumn evenings. I save it until the leaves are changing, and the wind is blowing.

... Cold Comfort Farm. #153: janmpb: I think you've hit it on the head- there is something really unique about they way The Thirteenth Tale is written (my grandmother kept saying how it was the most well written book she had read in a while- I don't know about that, but because of the way it ...

I absolutely loved The Thirteenth Tale! My memory is so poor that I can't remember exactly why I loved it so much! Good idea, wester. I'm reading The Thirteenth Tale, Columbine and Say You're One of Them and not loving any of them, by the way.

#201 hih1973 I read The Thirteenth Tale when it was first released. It was interesting and "spooky" with elements of horror. I found some of it "difficult" because this is not my normal genre, but I certainly was compelled to finish it! ETA The reason I picked it up is because it falls ...

I have been looking forward to this group read because I listened to The Thirteenth Tale and absolutely loved it but People of the Book is new to me, so I'm glad it was chosen! Also, Nov 1 is my birthday so it will be like a gift to myself! A book is always my favorite gift! Be back soon. MB

19: koalamom Actually the group read will be on People of the Book there is already a thread on the 50 book challenge. Thirteenth Tale is one of my favorite books of all time I think you'll like it. But please (to all) join us on November 1st on the group read!

Finally finished The Thirteenth Tale and wrote a review. I digested the last quarter of the book quite slowly, to make sure I wasn't missing any connections, since there were so many. I love the way she used Jane Eyre. That was the best book I've read this year. Now zipping through The Rain ...

I just finished The Thirteenth Tale It was alright. I enjoyed the story for the most part. Just not a huge fan of the ending.

I've been reading The Thirteenth Tale too, just a few chapters a night, because, like many of us, I'm ridiculously busy these days.

The Thirteenth Tale is definitely one to be savored. I just finished a reread for a RL book club and read it much more slowly the second time around. I was amazed at the details and how much more meaning they took on. If you've only read it once, try one more time!

I really enjoyed The Thirteenth Tale and agree that it is a book to be savored. Enjoy, Jim!

Work has been kicking my butt lately so I'm still working slowly through The Thirteenth Tale. Slow actually feels like a good way to read this particular book; I'm emulating Margaret by getting it in sections ;-)

I finished Handling Sin this week and have started The Thirteenth Tale. So far I like it a lot.

... I definitely agree with you on Goldie. I just finished (finally!) Handling Sin, and wrote a review. I have begun The Thirteenth Tale, and after about 50 pages I'm quite intrigued.

I read The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield again, having just read it in April, this time for a book club meeting on Monday. It was time well spent as the book was nearly as enjoyable the second time around and I picked up on some finer points that I just flew by in my first reading. The ...

Finished my reread of The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield for an RL book club on Monday and I'm glad I took the time. I flew through it the first time in April and missed some fine points, which made much more sense this time around. I'll start Tana French's The Likeness at ...

Hi Bonnie!! My 2 best so far in 2009 were: The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield and Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen.. but will gladly second votes for The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger and The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon Have fun choosing ...

ah .. here you are... got you starred so it's easier for me to find you now. I loved The Thirteenth Tale. If you end up doing this for the group read, I'm going to poke my head in from time to time just to see what you all are discussing and perhaps adding my 2 cents as well. I've also read ...

38. The Thirteenth Tale: A Novel by Diane Setterfield - September 9, 2009 An ode to the traditional gothic novel. I did not find this book all that satisfying. I might be biased a little because I loved The 19th Wife: A Novel!
