The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo replaced by Yaya Garcia by Joachim Machado de Assis. Machado de Assis' book was okay, which makes it better than Coehlo's, but neither are great, in my opinion. First up was The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It was a quick and easy story to get through but it didn't do anything for me. Guess I'm not the spiritual type.

I don't "get" Coelho either - I read The Alchemist (sorry bonniebooks!) - and like you Nickelini, I constantly felt like I was being hit over the head by his idea of the Meaning of Life. Oh! Oh! Well, I'll add my voice to the chorus of people who loved The Road by McCarthy, but I have to add a note about The Alchemist too--I read this the summer before I started college. This by far was the best book I read in 2007.
The Road by Cormac McCarthy was also excellent. But everyone in my family got a copy of The Alchemist for Christmas! I am so happy that someone felt the same about The Alchemist, it was painful! Didn't mean to change the topic! I can't pinpoint why but I actually really liked the book The Alchemist. A friend of mine once reviewed The Alchemist by saying that she would rather "chew on a piece of cow dung" than finish it. 56-58> I, too, was one who was really unimpressed by The Alchemist, so I'm intrigued by what Joycepa has to say - maybe someone will re-translate it sometime and I might enjoy it then!

The interesting thing about the most commonly shared book, is that there is one book more among six of us, The Alchemist, but this is way down the list because it is more commonly owned by others on LT ... books on LT the first is One hundred years of solitude at number 23, from 1967. Of the other 11 in the top 100 books only The Alchemist is more recent (1988). Mine is The Alchemist too. I didn't like The Alchemist for the same reason I didn't like Tuesdays With Morrie. It's supposed to be full of life lessons, but honestly? I found them both altogether too trite for my tastes.
