Heavy is the Head that Wears the Crown
T.M. Frazier is a new author for me. It seems 2020 has been a year of new authors for me. I have a confession however this has been on my kindle for three years and I had completely forgot about it. To be fair I buy more books then I will ever read. That isn’t really an excuse or a good one at least. But how T.M. Frazier can write something that is painful and yet at the same time it makes you fall in love with the bad guy, or in this case the King. I am going to start by telling you that this book is not a happy go lucky unicorns and rainbows type of happily ever after, it is so far from that it’s not even funny. It has drug use, sex, abuse, lies, violence and death, so if you have an issue or struggle with any of the topics listed then I suggest you skip King. However, if you are like me and you love a book with an edge to it and have no issues with a bit of danger then you won’t just like King you will love it!

King is an @$$%^&*, a bad boy, he could be the poster child for being the epitome of an @$$%^&*. Look up the definition of @$$%^&* and his picture should be right there with it. But he is so much more, and when we can peel back the layers surrounding King, you see that he is so much more than what people see. He has a reason for being how he is, and he isn’t going to apologize for that and he shouldn’t.

Doe has no memory of who she is, she’s homeless and is barely surviving. She ends up at King’s coming home party with the hope of finding a bed and food and at this point she really doesn’t care what she has to do to achieve that. When something happens and King collects her as payment she doesn’t know if should be scared, pissed, or relieved. She has a mouth on her that can get her in trouble in a heartbeat, and she has no problems telling King what she thinks. Slowly a relationship between them forms and it is a complete roller coaster wrapped up in some secrets. I don’t want to give too much of the story away by diving into too much detail but there is so much to unpack in three hundred some odd pages and it is worth every minute. What I want to commend the author on is that her cast of supporting characters is amazing. I would say go get Tyrant today because I can not wait to see how this story continues. I have two books that are up next for me tomorrow. Tyrant has just replaced them both.

OMGeez! What a crazy ride. A gritty romance, but such powerful characters. Loving this series and will be writing a more detailed review soon! ( )

3.5 Stars

I liked a lot of it but I definitely had problems with a lot of it too.

Interesting characters and story line. I liked Doe, King, Preppy and Bear.
The intimate scenes are steamy. Most are well written.

There are scenes that are jumpy.
One that really bothered me was the Very Important scene that involved Doe in danger and what happened to Preppy. That should have been a lot more detailed.
Some flow problems. Some editing errors.

I definitely have problems with the ending.
Not that it is a cliffhanger. I was prepared for that.
Nope, it was the unbelievability of what we are left to believe about Doe.

Nowhere near as good as I thought it would be.

I can't decide whether I loved or hated it, but it was certainly a story which was able to leave me disgusted, shocked and enthralled at the same time. First off, the author as well as the editor(s) need some spelling lessons, for all those typos nearly weren't intolerable anymore. Please learn the difference between than/then and its/it's! And the author definitely needs to think of synonyms for the word "fuck" in every possible way. I searched the story for this word, and it appeared more than 550 times, sometimes thrice in one sentence. Sorry, T.M. Frazier, I get this was meant to include harsh language, but too much is too much.

This was a story I wanted to throw at the wall and mark as "did-not-finish" so many times I lost count, but the author right then threw in major twists to keep me reading. One of the best things about it was certainly its fast pace as well as its outstanding characters. I felt for Doe and wanted to know more about her fate. Preppy became my new favorite minor character. Grace was such a cool granny. And King was ... difficult, I guess, for the lack of a more matching expression. I think I have to be proud to have made it to the very end, because the ride kept being so frustrating. The first 19 chapters were pretty good and had some really well-written sections, but the 20th chapter saw a major twist which left me questioning why this was necessary. The rest of the story felt rushed, as if the author didn't know what to write to get to the ending. She even threw in some badly handled shocking scenes written for the single purpose of being shocking, and several scenes felt underdeveloped and missing the point. I already decided not to read the sequel ... and then there was that cliffhanger. Who would not want to read the sequel, Tyrant, right now?

Overall, this was very frustrating to read and will not be reminded by me as being outstanding in its genre or very innovative. In fact, the author established an interesting basis as well as an intriguing setting with profound characters only to weaken its effect on the reader by some annoying twists which have already been used by other authors thousands of times. And yet she managed to keep me reading, so it could not have been that bad.

"King" receives three stars because of its ability to create such polarizing feelings about it. I would not recommend it to anyone not interested in Dark Romance, but neither am I into this genre and survived it nonetheless, so ... you probably have to form your own opinion about it if you think about reading it. The story as well as the sequel are available for free on the internet, which is why I will presumably not hesitate to read "Tyrant". Hopefully, this one will be better executed; the potential is clearly existent. ( )
