Como tantas vezes me acontece, Mrs. Elizabeth Gaskell tornou-se numa das minhas autoras de eleição, apenas com uma obra. Já antes lhe sucedera Miss Austen com o seu Pride&Prejudice, ou com a grande Juliet Marillier com A Filha da Floresta, ou com Charlotte Brontë e Jane Eyre, entre outras. Mas tenham cautela! porque nunca é com ligeireza que elevo um autor aos estádios mais distintos da minha profunda adoração; faço-o sempre com a maior das sinceridades. É-me impossível ler algo com tanta qualidade e não bradar aos quatro ventos para que saibam! Só a ideia é tão cruel! Imaginem uma pessoa passar incauta pelo mundo sem saber a maravilha que a espera numa livraria ali ao pé! Ora essa! É urgente que alguém lhe explique como o autor A e a autora B são mestres da escrita e do enredo e do romance e da fantasia e de tudo mais! Então, basicamente, este bradar ao mundo, da minha parte, consiste na minha pessoa impingir o autor/o livro, a quem têm a grande sorte de me aparecer à frente no momento seguinte da minha iluminação. E como tantos outros activistas antes de mim, por norma, o objectivo da minha loucura cumpre-se, e o feliz impingido acaba por se juntar à minha mui nobre causa.
Devo dizer que a minha leitura beneficiou bastante pelo facto de ter visto a mini-série antes, uma vez que está tão bem feita (bem fiel à obra), e interpretada. Pois nós fomos felizes por ter Richard Armitage como Thornton, e Armitage foi feliz por ter Daniela Denby-Ashe como a sua Miss Hale.
Como uma boa activista, devo falar um bocadinho da história, a primeira coisa que me salta é que esta é uma história de contrastes. Por um lado temos uma jovem mulher habituada à feliz rotina do seu mundo perfeito, com a sua casinha no campo onde o sol brilha sobre tudo e todos, onde as portas da vizinhança, tal como a sua, estão sempre abertas seja para quem for, onde reina a harmonia e bem-estar, onde tudo é a definição de comunidade. Por outro lado temos um homem que é o seu negócio. Vive numa cidade suja e tomada pelo mundo industrial em contínuo desenvolvimento, onde, invariavelmente, os ricos constituem uma sociedade e os pobres outra. Um sitio tomado pelo negrume que é lançado das chaminés e também de algumas pessoas. A história ganha vida quando estas duas realidades chocam sob as formas de Margaret Hale e de John Thornton. Duas personalidades fortes e resistentes, duas línguas afiadas, e dois corações por estrear. Isto promete!
Por isso, fãs de um romance ao estilo de Miss Austen, ou se não a conhecem (…), fãs de uma história de época bem construída, com romance e muito mais, não percam! 5 stars!

As so often happens to me, Mrs. Elizabeth Gaskell has become one of my authors of choice, with only one novel. It had happened before with Miss Austen and her "Pride & Prejudice", or with the great Juliet Marillier and her "Daughter of the Forest", or with Charlotte Brontë and her "Jane Eyre", among others. But be careful! because it is never lightly that I lift an author to the highest stages of my deep adoration; I always do it with sincerity. It is impossible for me to read something with such quality and not shout to world about it! Just the idea is so cruel! Imagine a person passing by the world without knowing the wonders that awaits in the closest bookstore! Pshaw! It is urgent that someone will explain how the author A and the author and B are masters of writing! So basically, this cry to the world, on my part, consists in my person to foist the author / book, to whoever has the good fortune to appear in front of me the next moment of my enlightenment. And like many other activists before me, the reason behind my madness is fulfilled, and the happy foisted eventually joins my very noble cause.
I must say that my reading benefited a lot by having seen the mini-series before, since it is so well done (faithful to the book), and interpreted. Because as we were happy to have Richard Armitage as Thornton, Armitage was happy too, having Daniela Denby-Ashe as his Miss Hale.
As a good activist, I should talk a little bit about the story, the first thing that jumps fom my mind is that this is a story of contrasts. On the one hand we have a young woman accustomed to the routine of her happy perfect world, living in a little cottage in the countryside where the sun shines on everything and everybody, where the doors of the neighborhood, such as hers, are always open to everybody, where harmony and well-being reigns, where everything is the definition of community. On the other hand we have a man that is his business. He lives in a dirty city taken by the industrial world in continuous development, where, invariably, the rich constitute a society and the poor another. A place filled with the blackness that is released from chimneys and from some people. The story comes alive when these two realities collide in the forms of Margaret Hale and John Thornton. Two strong personalities, two sharp tongues and two hearts for debut. This promises!
So, fans of romance in the style of Miss Austen, or if you do not know her(shame on you), fans of a story well built, with romance and more, don't miss it! 5 stars! ( )
