In this glittering tale of forgotten treasures and long-held secrets, international bestseller Karen Swan explores one woman's journey to discovering the truth behind an abandoned apartment and a family whose mysteries may be better left undiscovered. When high-powered fine art agent Flora Sykes is called in to assess objects d'art in a Paris apartment that has been abandoned since WWII, she is skeptical at first-until she discovers that the treasure trove of paintings is myriad…and priceless. The powerful Vermeil family to whom they belong is eager to learn more and asks Flora to trace the history of each painting. Despite a shocking announcement that has left her own family reeling, Flora finds herself thrown into the glamorous world of the Vermeils. But she soon realizes there is more to this project than first appears. As she researches the provenance of their prize Renoir, she uncovers a scandal surrounding the painting-and a secret that goes to the very heart of the family. The fallout will place Flora in the eye of a storm that carries her from London to Vienna to the glittering coast of Provence. Xavier Vermeil, the brusque scion of the family, is determined to separate Flora from his family's affairs in spite of their powerful attraction to one another. Just what are the secrets he is desperately trying to hide? And what price is Flora willing to pay to uncover the devastating truth…?… (mais)

An actual Paris apartment was discovered after having been abandoned (although rent was paid) and left to gather dust for 70 years. Imagine!

That inspired Swan to write this book although her story has nothing to do with the real apartment. It's a great idea for a story, but I didn't like the way that Swan carried it off. It's a kind of mystery, but there are too many obvious clues that go unnoticed or ignored by our heroine. And the method of dealing with the physical finds would have been dictated by law and accepted procedure, not just what the heirs would have decided on their own.

Only the super rich inhabit the pages of this book and each and every one of them is wearing something that Swan must identify by designer: a dress, skirt, blouse, shoes, tie, watch, binkini, whatever. Chanel espadrilles, for heaven's sake! I found it tiresome and annoying and it took away from the story. Which wasn't too bad. Not great, but not bad. ( )

THE PARIS SECRET is such a fabulous book. From the start, the story engrossed me as Flora, a fine art agent from London, arrived in Paris together with her boss to visit an apartment that has been locked since World War II. What secrets does the apartment have? Why has the apartment been locked and forgotten for so long time? But as Flora begins investigating the history of the paintings that are found in the apartment, she realizes maybe the apartment was left that way for a reason.

The Paris Secret is a book about a lot of secrets from all the characters, family relationships, and how much family is important no matter what. I liked the plot and Karen Swan's writing.
She took a story from a documentary that she watched and built the story based on it. I won't tell you what part is the true story because it is a spoiler and I believe that you need to to this book blindly.
I like when books combine two eras, and this work is doing pretty well, in my opinion.
I want to give also a trigger warning for rape; the rape is not taking place; it is something told. That is all I am going to write about the trigger warning because it is part of the plot.
The truth is that I didn't expect the revelation of the big secret of this story; it surprised me and I loved it very much. ( )

I keep falling for books set in Paris & I probably should back off for a bit because this one is the dumbest one yet. It's based on a true story of a Paris apartment that was rre-opened several years ago after being locked up for seventy years. It was a veritable time capsule of Paris life in the 1930's This could have been a great story, but instead, it's a total mess.

Flora Sykes is a high-powered art agent in London When her boss asks her to travel to Paris to help him appraise the contents of an apartment that has been sealed for 70 years. It is owned by the powerful Vermeil family who hire Flora's firm to catalog the contents of the apartment and to bring anything of value to auction. Flora settles in to inventory and place valuations on everything, but is soon up against the Vermeil children who are anything but pleasant. The plot twists and the plot turns with an irritation side story about her brother who is in deep trouble about....something, but that something is not revealed until the 11th hour in deus ex machina fashion.

In the meantime there is at least three product placements per page. AND, Flora picks the absolutely worst person to end up with. This book is a mess. ( )
