This book was written in the style of a play, which was very effective because the dialogue was strong; I think including too much prose about setting and actions would have detracted from what was being said. As it is, the subject matter the two men were talking about was very deep, and there were a handful of times I had to put down the book and just think about what was revealed to me. I highly recommend this, though McCarthy and this style might not be as enjoyable to every reader. ( )

Questo minuscolo libricino non mi lascia in pace. Una moderna riflessione, stile Cormac, sull'esistenza di dio, sul senso della vita, sulla fede o non fede, sulla giustizia divina. Mi rimanda a Giobbe, (l'archetipo, dell'uomo che si interroga su quanto scritto sopra), seduto sul mucchio di immondizia al margine del villaggio mentre con un coccio si gratta una specie di rogna e si domanda perché dio si accanisca così contro di lui servitore fedele e migliore dei giusti, e se tutto questo abbia un senso. Arriva sino a mettere in dubbio l'esistenza stessa di dio, perché se si comporta così nei suoi confronti o non esiste o il mondo é gestito da un criminale (singolare maschile in ebraico, il libro di Giobbe scatenò un'importante discussione nell'ambiente della redazione dell'AT proprio per questi contenuti al limite dell'eresia, grande merito a quegli uomini che lo hanno inserito). Dio chiamato in causa si presenta a Giobbe e gli parla, privilegio unico (al Nero anche), e dopo un po' di cosmologia e lezioni di zoologia gli dice che Lui ha un piano divino che noi poveri uomini non possiamo capire. Giobbe abbassa il capino e dice OK non capisco ma mi adeguo, il senso non lo trovo ma se lo dici tu che c'é per me va bene. E sia quel che sia, continuerò ugualmente a seguire le tue leggi. Così é per il Nero non serve trovare un senso, quello é privilegio divino, noi possiamo solo credere, fidarci che tutto sia in buone mani. Il Bianco, e qui ci discostiamo dalla posizione classica dell'AT, non si comporta come Giobbe/il Nero e non abbassa il capino. Il mondo, gli uomini, non gli danno che prove e conferme della non esistenza di dio e del piano divino, l'ultima illusione che potesse esserci qualcosa é scomparsa assieme al fumo che usciva dai camini dei lager nazisti. L'unico senso che riesce a dare alla vita, al mondo é che esso non ha un senso. Punto. E coerentemente fa la sua scelta: annullare questo non senso, permettendogli finalmente di trovarne uno. Per quanto mi concerne tendo di più al Bianco, é per quanto riguarda il pensiero del suicidio penso che esso sia "una potente consolazione che aiuta a superare più di una brutta notte". Okay, so it's dark. But that's what you get when you dig. Prolific and widely heralded novelist Cormac McCarthy has been digging for decades now, and, following in the moist, shadowy ruts of his recent novel The Road, his new book, The Sunset Limited, also refuses to merely skim the topsoil. Without a moment's hesitation, McCarthy delves into his weird plain-language profundity, grinding steadily at the resin surface of the world's oldest and toughest question of "why exactly are we here?" He does so in a spare and poignant way, using only a dialogue between two nameless foil characters: an exhausted, depressive professor and a humble, slow-talking ex-con, who, in their quests for a middle ground may just inadvertantly carve out a canyon too wide to shout across. I like a book like this because it makes me think.

They say an unexamined life is not worth living, and McCarthy's words--bearing the weight of Shakespeare and the immediacy of Updike--always compel examination. While I do recommend sequentially sandwiching this book with a couple of toes-in-the-sand, pastel-colored novels, I still consider it essential reading and required contemplation. Just embrace it. Read it sitting on a damp tile floor in low light with a storm outside. Read it in a house of mirrors. Read it on an empty screeching subway car in the middle of the night as the train jerks and the lights flicker. Alone and silently, begin. It's a very short book, but its effect as a catalyst to commonly ducked-under introspection can last as long as you'd want, or as long as you'd let it. McCarthy, you'll find, has somehow fitted this, the slimmest book on the shelf, with a caliber wide enough for a life.
