I couldn't make my way through this one. The Tracy/Hepburn set up turned out to be a one trick pony without Spencer and Kate. If it were a film, I'd say that it lacked chemistry. And mystery.

But my biggest problem was the prevalent air of smugness. This wasn't an especially clever book, just one stereotype after another. ( )

The debut to the series it introduces us to all the main characters that pepper the rest of the series. In it Levine begins the creation of all his characters, sets the background history for the future books. It is not necessary to read this one first but it adds much to the enjoyment of the rest of the plots and characters.
Solomon needs Lord to become the lawyers for a socialite accused of killing her husband during sex gone wrong. Lord needs Steve's experience in the courtroom. Together they make the perfect team, if it was not for the fact that they are absolute opposites. Victoria is looking for stability in her future, a job at a nice law office, marriage to her handsome, wealthy businessman fiancé. Solomon is willing to take risks, both professionally and personally. Steve must also fight the system as it tries to take his nephew away from him. Rescuing Bobby from his abusive mother, Solomon's sister, may not have been done the most legal way but now he will do whatever it takes now to keep Bobby safe.

Solomon vs. Lord is a lively combination of legal thriller, romantic suspense, and comedy. The mystery isn't memorable, but the characters have surprising depths, the repartee is crisp, and I laughed out loud. I wish more books had such deft dialogue.

Victoria Lord is an uptight, rule abiding, prosectution attorney until she gets fired from her job because Steve Solomon beats her in court. Steve Solomon is a rule breaking, take it as it comes defense attorney with a heart. These two clash as they team up for two trials; one a murder trial and the other a child custody that involves Solomon and his nephew.

A fun and very witty novel. I had picked this up previously and couldn't get into it, for the life of me I can't figure out why. The heat between Solomon and Lord practically leaps off the page. Levine also has made both characters charmingly human. A great read that I highly recommend. ( )
