"Magistrates are being murdered and a case once thought to be closed might be wide-open in this gripping new historical mystery from the USA Today bestselling author of Who Speaks for the Damned. It's October 1814. The war with France is finally over, Europe's diplomats are convening in Vienna for a conference that will put their world back together, and London finds itself in the grip of a series of terrifying murders eerily similar to the shocking Ratcliffe Highway murders of three years before. In 1811, two entire families were brutally murdered in their homes. A suspect--a young Irish seaman named John Murphy--was arrested. But before he could be brought to trial, Murphy hanged himself in his cell. The murders ceased, and London slowly began to breathe easier. But when the lead investigator, Sir Edwin Pym, is killed in the same brutal way, suddenly everyone is talking about the heinous crimes again, and the city is paralyzed with terror. Was the wrong man arrested for the murders? Has a vicious serial killer decided it's time to kill again? Bow Street magistrate Sir Henry Lovejoy turns to his friend Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, for assistance. Pym's colleagues are convinced his manner of death is a coincidence, but Sebastian has his doubts. The more he looks into the three-year-old murders, the more certain he becomes that the hapless John Murphy was not the real killer. Which begs the question--who was?"--… (mais)

The historical Ratcliffe Highway murders lays the foundation for this complex mystery. Sebastian does his best sleuthing and the conclusion is satisfyingly twisty. Not as much personal character development in this installment. ( )

Bodies drop everywhere as Devlin tries to sort through the connections between the present day and crimes gone past. Regency London was not healthy for anyone, especially the poor. ( )

Kind of a 'middle of the bunch' sort for this series. I like how some of the overarching storylines are shaping up, and how much genuine history was incorporated. ( )

1814 A body of a magistrate is discovered in London and the killing is similar to the the Ratcliffe Highway killings of three years earlier. But someone was found guilty of those crimes or were they. Sebastian St. Cyr is asked to help in the investigation by Bow Street magistrate Sir Henry Lovejoy. Then another murder occurs.
An entertaining and well-written, plotted mystery with a good cast of well-developed characters.
An ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. ( )

I really love this series and this latest book is no exception. As always, Sebastian St. Cyr find himself pulled into another murder investigation and this one appears to be tied a pair of brutal murders which occurred years previously. Sebastian, of course, commences his investigation and additional bodies start to pile up. This one kept me curious and guessing until the end, and I was surprised by the author's note at the end - as potions of this book represent real events. Overall, fun reading and I can't wait for more of this series. ( )
