Award-winning Wharton Professor and Choiceology podcast host Katy Milkman has devoted her career to the study of behavior change. In this ground-breaking book, Milkman reveals a proven path that can take you from where you are to where you want to be, with a foreword from psychologist Angela Duckworth, the best-selling author of Grit.
Change comes most readily when you understand what's standing between you and success and tailor your solution to that roadblock. If you want to work out more but find exercise difficult and boring, downloading a goal-setting app probably won't help. But what if, instead, you transformed your workouts so they became a source of pleasure instead of a chore? Turning an uphill battle into a downhill one is the key to success.

Drawing on Milkman's original research and the work of her world-renowned scientific collaborators, How to Change shares strategic methods for identifying and overcoming common barriers to change, such as impulsivity, procrastination, and forgetfulness. Through case studies and engaging stories, you??ll learn:

?   Why timing can be everything when it comes to making a change
?   How to turn temptation and inertia into assets
?   That giving advice, even if it's about something you're struggling with, can help you achieve more

Whether you're a manager, coach, or teacher aiming to help others change for the better or are struggling to kick-start change yourself, How to Change offers an invaluable, science-based blueprint for achieving your goa

A good collection of practical tips on behavior modification techniques to apply mostly on yourself. Each chapter is focused on a single subject with a few stories to flesh out the research. The end of each chapter has a short summary of main points to keep in mind for application. ( )

This is a keeper! A precise, concise resource that offers data-backed yet accessible insights into how and what can help us change our behaviors.

The techniques Milkman describes mostly have been around for while: attach fun things to unpleasant things, reading fun books at the gym; accomplish big changes by breaking into smaller steps, save $3 a day instead of $150 per month; time reminders for the decision moment to be most effective, remind people to wear seat belts as they get into their cars instead of five minutes before. The one I found novel was: instead of offering people who are struggling advice, ask them for advice. In a work situation this is asking someone who is perhaps not doing well to mentor someone else. People believing that can do something (because you asked them to teach another) often rise to the expectation. At the end of the day, the book's biggest contribution is citing experiments Milkman and other performed to verify the techniques rather than the typical anecdote recounts. ( )

After such an enthusiastic forward, I was pumped to see my productivity levels jump over tall buildings. Now that I'm done with the book, I say the book just showed me the elevator to go to the top of the building and back down.

The book did its job in giving us strategies and tips to becoming a more productive person: start changes on a fresh start day (new job, new year's ...), triggers, and emergency passes to maintain a streak. And actually my favorite is that giving good advice helps you actually follow through with that advice. The book just lacked punch that could have pushed the rating to 5 stars, or above.
