On the home front, I finished Memoirs of a Geisha over three days (extremely fast for me) because I couldn't put it down. >188 Richardderus. Yes I'm about a little over a third of the way through Memoirs of a Geisha. We're having some tile laid and carpets cleaned tomorrow and I'm having a hard time putting the book down to get ready.

I very much enjoyed Geisha by Liza Dalby. I read it after reading Arthur Golden's novel, Memoirs of a Geisha. Dalby's book helped me understand the world of geisha. I was amazed that ... ... of older favorites. I should have better luck borrowing those titles from the libraries or finding a used book. I loved Memoirs of a Geisha, Maus and Life of Pi too. This was a book I doubted if I wanted to read it. Hyped books always attract me, but also give me a certain warning. The story of this book seemes interesting, but I'm often dissapointed by hyped ... I like the non-fiction Geisha by Liza Dalby. The geisha in the book was an American graduate student! The book is excellent.

Just to end on a positive note, two film adaptations I did like were Girl with a Pearl Earring and Memoirs of a Geisha, both of which stuck pretty well to the plot and did an ace job of recreating the atmosphere of the novel.
EDIT: Oh yes, and I thought Harry Potter ... MrsLee, Memoirs of a Geisha is a wonderful book, and one of my favourites. It's a smooth, quietly beautiful story that gets me every time.

The Red Tent Unrealistic characterization. Memoirs of a Geisha is the only one I've read recently. I liked the descriptions of geisha culture (I have no idea if it is remotely accurate) and the story was fun and the ending made me happy.

As far as narrators go, they absolutely can mae a bad story better or ruin a good one. I'm not a big fan of Memoirs of a Geisha but I initially heard it as an audiobook with a decent reader- otherwise I doubt I would have finished it. Same for The Island of the Day Before- I ... Oh yes of course Arthur Golden Memoirs of a geisha took me a while to get into it but after the first few chapters I was hooked. I know its a cliche but its much better than the film! Yes, Memoirs of a Geisha is definitely on my "books to read" list. I can already sense a big foot binding discussion coming out of all this! I read Snow Flower and the Secret Fan when it first came out and loved it. If you haven't already read Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden, then do so! It's a great book also. Let me say this again. It's not about the authors, it's about the topics. For instance, assuming Golden is Jewish - Memoirs of a Geisha would belong in a Asian fiction section not a Jewish author section although I suppose if they were highlighting Jewish authors they might do it AS WELL, ... ... a group, I read non-fiction and I select it by recommendations and popularity, not by the author. I don't believe that Memoirs of a Geisha would belong in an Asian section unless it was Asian fiction. Then, sure, put it in Asian.

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. It was wonderful and I was smiling for days and days - I had given up hope that she would end up with the Minister and then all of a sudden she ends up with him - it made me so happy :) ... character far better than a bunch of letters on faith that he wanted to start writing. I was very moved by this book.
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden - I picked this one because of the ending alone. I was smiling for weeks and weeks afterwards. The only downside to the book was ... ... wow! Maybe when my kids get older!

Pride and Prejudice ... something by George R.R. Martin (my boyfriend is demanding I read those), and maybe a favorite to re-read, like 1984 or Memoirs of a Geisha. deliriumslibrarian (#18) -- Memoirs of a Geisha might be interpreted by you as sexist and racist(and you may be alone in this view) but it's hardly tripe. The author did not try to sell the reading public on approving geishas. What he did, and he accomplished this beautifully, was describe in a ... ... well and good, folks, but what about the circuits of contemporary publication? Just reading a post on another board about Memoirs of a Geisha, which was published not ten years ago and is racist, sexist tripe. Yet libraries stock it by the boatload. Perhaps this could be more of a discussion ... ... I've read and have only found these so far:
The Fellowship of the Ring turned up The Great War for Civilisation and Memoirs of a Geisha.
Watership Down also turned up The Great War for Civilisation.
I also found a hadful of books that are on my wishlist.
Mostly, though, I ... ... which helps. It isn't the easiest book to get into, but once in I was hooked.

I dislike Memoirs of a Geisha I tried to watch Memoirs of a Geisha this weekend and had a really hard time getting in to it. I have not read the book, and after the watching the first 30 minutes of the movie, I don't think I want to.

I read the book first, and then saw the movie. While the book was good, the movie was phenomenal.
Memoirs of a Geisha just didn't do it for me. I tried to read it a couple of times, and couldn't make it very far. Never had any desire to see the film. ... do you think that is?
