Kingsley Amis’s best novel in the ten year period following Lucky Jim. Very sharp and funny. One wonders how to take the ending, where our heroine decides to abandon what she calls her “selfish” hopes and remain with Patrick Standish--the fellow who sort of date raped her. Is this Amis as misogynist? My own view is that the narrator is more sympathetic to the position that--in the final words of the novel--meeting Standish in the first place was “rather a pity.” ( )
