"Balaam and His Master" is a volume of stories, named after the first, from the pen of Mr. J. Chandler Harris, author of that enchanting book, "Uncle Remus." The stories in the present volume possess much of the charm, made up of mingled pathos and humor, which attached to the doings of "Brer Fox" and "Ole Man Rabbit" as chronicled by Uncle Remus. They are, one and all, redolent of the South, and vividly recall the touching relations which often subsisted between old Virginian families and their household slaves before the war destroyed the old order of things, and brought about a state of chaos from which no new order has as yet been evolved. -The Westminster Review, Vol. 136 [1891]
