Realistic Fiction/Fantasy ( )

GENRE: This is a great example of a realistic fiction novel, because the author creates a story that could easily take place today. Teens, adults, and upper elementary school student could relate to the experiences Sal and Phoebe go through. The author deals with true matters, like death, identity, and abandonment in an upfront way. Creech creates a fictional plot based on real life.

STYLE: This book is a great example of style in a novel, because the author uses a great variety of literary devices, like simile, metaphor, and onomatopoeia. The author describes many natural elements and sounds through the use of onomatopoeia and she makes reference to the experiences that Sal goes through by using a metaphor or simile. For example, "He let me behave like a wild boar" (112) and, "He flung himself up and down the aisles, receiving journals as if they were manna from heaven" (81).

ART/MEDIA: there is no art featured in the book

Such a touching and deep novel. It always amazes me how well some children's books cover difficult topics. ( )

Descrição do livro

Amazon.com (ISBN 0060233370, Library Binding)

Thirteen-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle's mother has disappeared. While tracing her steps on a car trip from Ohio to Idaho with her grandparents, Salamanca tells a story to pass the time about a friend named Phoebe Winterbottom whose mother vanished and who received secret messages after her disappearance. One of them read, "Don't judge a man until you have walked two moons in his moccasins." Despite her father's warning that she is "fishing in the air," Salamanca hopes to bring her home. By drawing strength from her Native American ancestry, she is able to face the truth about her mother. Walk Two Moons won the 1995 Newbery Medal.
