Fiction. Literature. Mystery. Historical Fiction. HTML:The suspenseful sequel to The Murder of Mr. Wickham, which sees Jonathan Darcy and Juliet Tilney reunited, and with another mystery to solve: the dreadful poisoning of the scoundrel Willoughby's new wife.
??An absolute page-turner full of well-plotted mystery and hints of simmering romance.... More of the Jane Austen characters we love (as well as those we love to hate).? ??Mia P. Manansala, author of Arsenic and Adobo

Catherine and Henry Tilney of Northanger Abbey are not entirely pleased to be sending their eligible young daughter Juliet out into the world again: the last house party she attended, at the home of the Knightleys, involved a murder??which Juliet helped solve. Particularly concerning is that she intends to visit her new friend Marianne Brandon, who's returned home to Devonshire shrouded in fresh scandal??made more potent by the news that her former suitor, the rakish Mr. Willoughby, intends to take up residence at his local estate with his new bride.
Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley are thrilled that their eldest son, Jonathan??who, like his father, has not always been the most socially adept??has been invited to stay with his former schoolmate, John Willoughby. Jonathan himself is decidedly less taken with the notion of having to spend extended time under the roof of his old bully, but that all changes when he finds himself reunited with his fellow amateur sleuth, the radiant Miss Tilney. And when shortly thereafter, Willoughby's new wife??whom he married for her fortune??dies horribly at the party meant to welcome her to town.
With rumors flying and Marianne??known to be both unstable and previously jilted by the dead woman's newly made widower??under increased suspicion, Jonathan and Juliet must team up once more to uncover the murderer. But as they collect clues and close in on suspects, eerie incidents suggest that the killer may strike again, and that the pair are in far graver danger than they or their families could i

Following the events at Donwell Abbey as recounted in The Murder of Mr. Wickham, Juliet Tilney has been invited to visit Colonel and Marianne Brandon at Delaford. Meanwhile, Jonathan Darcy and several of his former classmates have been invited to spend a month at Allenham Court with Mr. Willoughby and his new bride. Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney are surprised and pleased to see each other at a dinner party at Barton Park, but the evening ends in tragedy with the sudden death of Mrs. Willoughby, apparently from poison. Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney have successfully investigated a murder before. Can they do it again?

I like Jonathan Darcy and Juliet Tilney as sleuthing partners. Jonathan has personality traits characteristic of autism or Asperger’s. Juliet accepts Jonathan’s differences, and she is very protective of him in social settings where others might not be as understanding. Even so, the book drags on too long. I listened to the audio version, and there is nearly an hour more of the recording left after the murder is solved. The author seems compelled to include all of the major characters from Sense and Sensibility, but one set of characters has a story line that is completely independent of the murder plot. Since it doesn’t advance the murder plot, it doesn’t belong in the book, and the author and her editor(s) should have resisted the temptation. ( )

Not as emotionally engaging or interesting as the first book in the series. I was glad when the author finally revealed who-done-it, mostly because I was getting bored. ( )

This is already a tired concept. I got tired of the constant dithering about this and that propriety. And when the author can’t decide on the facts either, I got really annoyed. Did Mrs. Willoughby vomit in her death throes, or did she not? Too irritated to finish the book. ( )

Very clever. I really enjoyed this mix of characters from Jane Austen novels and their progeny. Newlywed Willoughby has invited some school friends for a country house visit. Included is Jonathan Darcy, son of Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam. Devonshire doesn't lack for other Austen folk, and the Brandons are pleased to receive their new friend Juliet Tinley as a houseguest. This was so fun. Someone not so nice is poisoned and Jonathan and Juliet endeavor to investigate as much as social mores in a slightly staid time period will allow. ( )

Thanks to Netgalley for an advance review copy of this book!

Seriously, SUCH fun. Once again, The Late Mrs. Willoughby takes us into the delightful world of Jane Austen....with a few twists and turns along the way. As someone who adores Austen, I think she will be very proud of how Claudia Gray pays homage to familiar characters and new family members.

In this book, I really appreciated Jonathan Darcy. In not so many words, Darcy is on the neurodivergent spectrum. And I love how it is depicted with an authenticity and vulnerability. Also, it is a way to show that "different" types of people can do big things and solve big crimes.

Juliet Tilney is an absolute delight. I will keep reading this series because of her. Her commitment to convention but also her spunkiness and challenging convention too. ( )
