En 9000 avant J.-C., selon Platon, se dressait, au milieu de l'Atlantique, une île peuplée par des guerriers, les Atlantes. Mais, en quelques heures funestes, elle fut engloutie par les flots... De nos jours, au large de la Grèce. Lors de l'exploration sous-marine d'une épave, l'archéologue Jack Howard trouve un disque en or massif qui donnerait la clé de la cité perdue. Au même moment, dans une nécropole égyptienne, le professeur Hiebermeyer découvre sur une momie un papyrus rédigé en grec ancien qui mentionne Atlantis et révèle son emplacement... Avec ces deux découvertes, toute la science archéologique est remise en cause. Et même les plus sceptiques doivent se rendre à la raison : 1'Atlandide n'est peut-être pas un mythe mais une réalité...

Mon avis est mitigé concernant ce thriller archéologique.
Côté positif, la théorie sur laquelle sont bâties l'existence et les caractéristiques de l'Atlantide est passionnante. En effet, l'auteur a rassemblé des éléments réels issus de découvertes archéologiques en égypte ou en Crète pour concevoir une Atlantide plausible. L'exploration des différentes ruines atlantes est passionnante tout au long du livre.
Côté négatif, le personnage principal, censé être un archéologue certes brillant, se révèle être aussi un plongeur émérite, un as du maniement des armes,etc... bref,c'est James Bond. Avec toute un
panoplie d'exagérations, de bagarres et d'explosions hollywoodiennes.
Autant j'avais apprécié le côté archéologique, autant la partie James Bond m'a déçu par ses multiples exagérations et son dénouement très prévisible.
A la différence du très controversé Da VInci code, l'auteur a ajouté des notes à la fin du livre qui précisent quelles parties de l'histoire sont réelles et quelles parties sont imaginaires, ce qui me parait très honnête. ( )

Jack Howard is a marine archaeologist and along with a number of his friends and colleagues is lucky enough to discover the key to the location of what most people would consider a myth. Unfortunately they’re not the only ones. So the adventure begins with a race to the prize before piracy, terrorism and even nuclear warfare rob the world of a wonderful discovery.

Unfortunately the book was very hit and miss for me. For example excitement would build, the team diving in unfamiliar waters, not knowing what they were going to find and then suddenly the author would give long descriptions consisting of an awful lot of technical jargon and diving know-how, and to a non-diver like myself the whole thing became a little tedious and annoying. I just wanted to know what happened next.

Also a lot of the story line was based on happenstance, the right people being in the right place at the right time with access to the right equipment. The dénouement was predictable too, based again on a twist of fate, so was pretty much of an anti-climax.

As the author is himself a marine archaeologist of some note it seems likely that he may have been hampered by his own expertise. In my opinion an average book, the material was there but unfortunately it wasn’t used to the best advantage. ( )

Pitoyable!

David Gibbins är marinarkeolog och han har doktorerat vid Cambridge. Tanken på en brittisk motsvarighet till Valerio Massimo Manfredi (den italienska arkeolog som bl.a. skrivit Alexandertrilogin) lockar sannerligen, men där Manfredi har en narrativ ådra och en känsla för dramaturgi kan Gibbins inte svara med mycket mer än torra fakta (boken kryllar av dem) och en kärlek till ämnet.

Atlantis hemlighet skall alltså handla om upptäckten av det försvunna Atlantis av en grupp marinarkeologer. Boken har beskrivits som en blandning av Indiana Jones och Da Vinci-koden, men en bättre beskrivning vore en blandning av Tom Clancy och Da Vinci-koden. Vid sidan av de snurriga, men läsvärda, försöken att förklara varför Atlantis skulle vara kulturens vagga vars folk vandrade ut för att grunda alla stora civilisationer är det nämligen fråga om en s.k. techno-thriller och en ganska plump sådan. Gibbins har en barnslig kärlek till teknologi och boken kryllar av portabla laserbrännare, magnetiska kompositmaterial som kan blåsas upp under vatten och bilda gångtunnlar, mängder av vapen av olika slag osv (och av irriterande beskrivningar av dem). Till genren hör stormaktspolitik och i Atlantis hemlighet är den representerad av en sjunken kärnvapenbestyckad sovjetisk ubåt, som råkar ligga precis för ingången till Atlantis.

Nåväl, boken saknar inte underhållningsvärde och Gibbins har förstås en ingående kunskap om fr.a. den minoiska kulturvärlden som berikar boken. De svepande slutsatserna, där snart sagt allt förklaras utifrån en enda punkt (à la Da Vinci-koden), är intressanta och underhållande ända till de sista sidorna (då Gibbins biter efter lite för mycket med väntat resultat).
