The results of the working of railways have been in many respects different from those anticipated by their projectors.  One of the most unexpected has been the growth of an immense passenger-traffic.  The Stockton and Darlington line was projected as a coal line only, and the Liverpool and Manchester as a merchandise line.  Passengers were not taken into account as a source of revenue, for at the time of their projection, it was not believed that people would trust themselves to be drawn upon a railway by an "explosive machine," as the locomotive was described to be.  Indeed, a writer of eminence declared that he would as soon think of being fired off on a ricochet rocket, as travel on a railway at twice the speed of the old stagecoaches.… (mais)

I tried reading this on a previous occasion but failed to get into it. I do not know why I picked it up again, but am glad I did.

It is a very easy read, not at all a heavy tome, with minute detail about every task or effort.
What struck me most was that the activity was the century of the 1800's, which is not all that long ago, and yet we are talking about t he development of the first powered railways, bridges which we take for granted today etc.

Whilst almost exclusively focused on the UK most of the examples if not the engineers themselves were known to this Australian based reader.

I would be interested to read a similar review of the achievements in the wider Europe and the Americas.

The edition I read was an abridged one volume of what is apparently a 5 volume tome. I suspect I have read enough such that I doubt I would want to buy the full set, but would be tempted to dip into it if it was available as a free E book. My understanding is the the method of abridging was to leave out particular engineers in total rather than include less about all of them, so presumably those included are those deemed most interesting.
