Heavily laden with British slang, this is the story of a typical high school boy -- with a few twists. First, Matt is haunted by his brother's ghost and the fateful events of the night that changed his life. As we travel with him through his probation, we see (perhaps too many of) his thoughts regarding both the present and the past. During a weekend trip with other teens on probation, Matt learns some important lessons and will maybe figure out how to move on with his life. This was well written, and despite some of the fixation on Matt's part, I actually would have liked to read more. ( )

Also brilliant - 1st person narration - it turns out three quarters of the way through he's unreliable! Could not put it down! Modern, fast-paced. S McK. ( )

Matt sees his dead brother all the time since the car accident that horribly burned his hands. The waking nightmares are out of control. His parole officer sends him out with two other problem teens for a weekend to get to know each other and face up to their bad life situations. This is the first book I've read by this author, and I found myself riveted with the special twist at the end. It was interesting to see how Matt changed by the end of the story, even though his life wasn't all better. ( )

Descrição do livro

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0670060909, Hardcover)

TWOC (verb): to steal an automobile, esp. for joyriding; etymology: taking without owner’s consent.

Ever since the joyriding accident that killed his brother Jake and left Jake’s girlfriend Jools hideously scarred, Matt has been tortured by his inability to remember exactly what happened. He decides to reconstruct the events of that tragic day—but can he survive the accident a second time? This visceral, heartbreaking book probes deep into Matt’s psyche, where the terrible truth is hiding. In his first novel for teenagers, award-winning writer Graham Joyce skirts the shadowy line between truth and reality, life and death, action and consequences.
