#325 petermc - Fremantle seems to be a hotbed of writers, I read a little about it all while finding a few facts on Silvey. Tim Winton is also based there and I must read something of his too. I really enjoyed this book. Reminded me of the greater risks I used to take for greater joys. And also made me want to learn to surf (although i'm old enough to have 'the fear' now). I finished The Risk Pool by Richard Russo on Sunday, read Breath by Tim Winton next because it was short and I knew I could finish it by the time An Echo in the Bone arrived. Started that last night. This will be book number 45 out of 50 for my reading challenge so I'm a bit ahead of the ... ... but great Bollywood fun. Reading it after helped me with much of the Hindi I'd had trouble with following on stage.

Tim Winton's Breath, which recently won the Miles Franklin Literary Award, is on the surface a coming-of-age novel about surfing in Australia. But at heart, it's much, much more. This novel contains some wonderful descriptions of surfing in Australia. They strongly convey the excitement, the fear and the exhilaration of it. The story is told by a man in his fifties who recalls the time, in his early adolescence, when he became interested in ... I'm sure if I was a Winton fan I would be happy that he won too, and I have certainly read and heard very good things about Breath. I haven't actually read it yet, so I can't really say too much more at this point. In view of Tim Winton's recent Miles Franklin success with Breath, I was wondering which work ALTers consider to be his finest? This is absolutely amazing! And, it is up to date, as Breath: A Novel by Tim Winton, which won the 2009 Miles Franklin Award yesterday, is listed there. Thanks Nickelini! Tim Winton wins his fourth Miles Franklin with Breath. He says he didn't expect to receive the prize...but then they all say that don't they? Breath by Tim Winton was announced as the winner of the 2009 Miles Franklin Literary Award today:
Fourth Miles Franklin win for Winton After a week spent discarding every book I picked up, (Breath went by the wayside after 12 pages), I decided to start my ER book Annie's Ghosts tonight. I was worried that given my track record over the past 7 days, this might not have been the best idea, but I am happy to report that 75 pages ... ... adjusting to the quirkiness of Grant's writing style.
I have decide to give Tim Winton a try and have now picked up Breath.
Happy reading All!
If it were up to me, I would have a hard time choosing between The Slap and Breath. If it was all about the writing it would be a Winton win, but if it was about the story and the reaction to it, it would have to go to Tsiolkas. #112 - A friend lent me an audiobook version of Breath some time ago, but I never got around to listening to it before he took it back! After reading your review, and mindful of your criticisms, I might just chase him up and see if I can't borrow it again. Breath by Tim Winton

I've just finished Breath and thought it was very good. Apart from the clean writing style, I liked the fact that I could not have predicted the turn that Pikelet's adolescence would take. I'm not a surfer or particuly interested in reading about teenage boys but this novel and his style of writing made me enjoy it immensely. I read Breath a few weeks ago and really, really enjoyed it. Breath: A Novel, Tim Winton, 2008
This is my first Tim Winton novel. I have yet to read Cloudstreet, The Riders, or Dirt Music but will definitely get to them eventually.
Tim Winton writes superbly about 2 lads growing into adolescence mad keen swimmers and keener to learn surfing. ... I'm three-quarters of the way through Breath, and enjoying it very much for the reasons stated above. It's more than just the story of a teenage boy and surfing. The big themes which Tim Winton is playing with include ordinary people needing to do extraordinary things, life and breath and ... ... breathtaking. Sparse prose that says only what is needed. There is no padding, no excess at all. I felt while I was reading Breath that Winton was telling ME the story of Pikelet. I can easily picture Winton as the adult telling me this story as his own.

There is something about this man that just resonates with me. I find it so easy to be drawn into his stories, to know and understand the characters and to see the landscapes he draws. This one is set in familiar territory for Winton. Western Australia, the 70's, ...
