Dit boek is al in 1964 geschreven, een van de eerste sf-boeken die Joop verzamelde. Ik moet bij alle klimaatnarigheid steeds aan de titel denken, dus met enige moeite op de kop getikt via boekwinkeltjes.nl. Het verhaal valt me erg tegen, het is onlogisch wat betreft de erin voorkomende figuren, niet erg aanvaardbare typen, haast alleen archè-typen, mensen worden in de steek gelaten of op sleeptouw genomen zonder enige logica. De aarde is getroffen door droogte, tengevolge van enorme vervuiling ligt er een soort vlies op de oceanen, waardoor er geen wolken ontstaan en het niet regent. Mensen trekken massaal naar de kust, waarom en met welke hoop is onduidelijk. De mensen en dieren sterven bij bosjes, en de overgeblevenen vechten om water, dat ze distilleren uit zeewater. Na jaar trekt de hoofdpersoon met een paar oude bekenden terug naar het stadje waar ze vandaan komen. Daar is een reservoirtje water, hoe dat kan is onduidelijk. Het eindigt ermee dat Ransom, de hoofdpersoon alleen verder trekt en zo uitgeput en gedesillusioneerd is dat hij niet in de gaten heeft dat het regent. Het verhaal zelf verliest zich vaak in een soort technische beschrijvingen, er zit eigenlijk heel weinig verhaal in, de wanhoop wordt niet invoelbaar en eigenlijk is het saai. Mpisschien is overleven ook erg saai, maar het verhaal had een stuk logischer en spannender gekund. jammer ( )

I love Ballard, but this one feels disjointed and ineffective and sometimes I couldn't follow what the characters' motivations were supposed to be. ( )
Not as good as Ballard's THE DROWNED WORLD, which I loved and will reread one day. I had trouble following a lot of what was going on THE DROUGHT, partly because of Ballard's high-brow prose.
