November: 62. The Lovely Bones I wasn't sure what to expect before reading this book. I'd heard it of it's popularity, which had driven me away from it; of spoilers I tried hard to forget from a past co-worker; that it should not be read unless the reader was in a very good place mentally; ...

This is kind of an odd one that popped into my head, but what about The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold? I read that one awhile back (loved it, just not the ending); and if I remember right, the narrator is a ghost. Not exactly your run-of-the-mill paranormal, but it might work for some.

#53-meanviv: I too was so disappointed in The Lovely Bones. The ending just ruined the whole thing for me. I'm currently reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I'm finding it very slow-moving. I can only hope it gets better. After that, I'm moving on to Catch-22 and Running With S ...

The Lovely Bones I was under the impression that this book was going to be AMAZING. It entertains me but its not something I'd read again

I'm reading Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. I like Pride and Prejudice Better. I read The Lovely Bones a few years ago and I really liked it. It was disturbing but also a little comforting.

The Stranger. Ugh, I'm glad it was a short book. It was terrible. Lovely Bones. It was fine until the end. Then it was ruined. And almost everything I've read by Gregory Maguire. I just can't get into him at all.

Just noticed something strange. I appear to have lost three books from my total as well as several tags 8 from my unread tag and 1 from my "British history" tag there may be more but that's what I noticed. I thought The Lovely Bones was okay, but I can see why you disliked it; I don't believe I'll be seeing a movie version.

#117 - ellevee - I am so sure I know exactly what part you are talking about in The Lovely Bones. Horrible. For me it ruined what I thought was a good (not great) book. #114 brewergirl -- How is The Six Wives of Henry VIII by Alison Weir? It is on my TBR shelf, but I am a little nervous ...

Off the top of my head I can remember crying like a baby while reading were A Separate Peace by John Knowles, The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, and Stone Garden by Molly Moynahan. I'm sure there's more.

Depressing doesn't really bother me, if there's a point. But, as I mentioned before, there was a point in The Lovely Bones where I just stopped buying it. I can suspend disbelief with the best of them, but this was just too much for me. Now that I think about it, I didn't find the book to be ...

#112 ellevee, I thought I was one of the few, but I did not like The Lovely Bones either. I thought it was extremely depessing and had a hard time finishing it. Same thing w/ The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Everyone loved it but I hated it--again depressing and actually pretty boring.

#109 I HATED The Lovely Bones. I was willing to go along with it for most of the story, but at one point towards the end (which I will not discuss, for those who want to read it), I actually put it down and stared at the cover in disbelief. That being said, I am in a distinct minority. Most ...

I just left Pennsylvania and The Lovely Bones. I'm now in Civil War era Georgia with The March.

I just finished The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold and have begun Doctorow's The March. The God of Small Things is still a read-in-progress, it just isn't all that compelling for me. The story just doesn't gain enough momentum for me.

... reason to want to read it, I know, but there you go. There's a new Alice Sebold as well. I wasn't as crazy about The Lovely Bones as some were, but I'm really curious about her second novel.

What I was going to say before was that The Lovely Bones is horrible in so many ways and I can't believe I even remember reading it 4 years later. It was that bad.

    15. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold- A very good, very touching novel. This was very well written and an interesting concept for a novel. I came away impressed. It is rare that I miss a book after I finish reading it, but I wish I hadn't finished this one already.

lynnlib: I stand corrected. Actually, The Lovely Bones is surprisingly bearable, because it finds a way to navigate the subject matter in a somewhat hopeful way -- more hopeful than the true tale, from what I hear. (Sorry my touchstones weren't working the other day -- wonder why?)

Okay, so maybe it wasn't exactly "wasted," but I submit The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, as I didn't walk away from it with much. It just seemed like a Lifetime movie. Seemed nice while I read it, but looking back on it, it's "meh." Awful seems a bit extreme, though. The Old Man and ...

SPOILER ALERT: The part at the end of The Lovely Bones that I had so much trouble with was when she borrowed the body of another girl to have sex. It was so jarring after what had gone before, like a bad YA romantic horror story. Reverends puts it very well(message #61) .

For all you readers who hated the ending of The Lovely Bones, how else would you have ended it? I found it strangely satisfying.

I totally agree with you about The Lovely Bones. It was great until the end. She got VERY Sweet Valley High with that ending.

Oh, yes, Reverends ~ that was it exactly! I enjoyed The Lovely Bones right up till I got to the bit about...no, I won't include a spoiler here. But the ending so troubled me that I have never recommended the novel to anyone. You hit the nail on the head with your succinct and clear analysis of ...

I so have to agree with Retrogirl85's hatred for the last few chapters of The Lovely Bones.
