The author presents ideas to contemplate in the midst of fast-paced action and tells a good story. ( )2391 The Walking Drum, by Louis L'Amour (read 23 Jun 1991) I never expected to read a book by this author, even though he has written 85 novels or more--supposedly all in print. This is because he writes like a "pulp" writer. In fact, when I started this 1984 book laid in 1176 I was reminded of the Rover Boys books I read when I was in grade school. But he does have a way of telling a fast-paced story, and he interlards this book with trappings of authenticity. It tells of Mathurin, a pagan Breton whose mother is killed and whose father is a prisoner of the Assassins in a fortress near the Caspian Sea. He is a galley slave, but he escapes, goes to Cordoba, then heads to free his father. His adventures are all fantastic, but one appreciates L'Amour's delicacy in handling his love interest and the way the story keeps moving. I do not expect to read another of his books--he is dead now. He grew up in Jamestown, N.D. Supposedly he is one of the four best-selling novelists in the world, and all of his novels have sold over a million copies. I love this book! I've read it at least 10 times. One of the best main characters in historical fiction. This is not a western, it's about medieval middle east. Ali Baba and the forty thieves kind of thing. Interesting. L'Amour did his research. Also filled with more idiotic testosterone than one book should be able to hold. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha
