The first in a new series this book will appeal to fans of historical mysteries and also noir. Set in the Middle Ages we follow the adventures of former knight Crispin Guest. Guilty of treason he is stripped of his rank, lands and position. Detailed descriptions brings 1383 London to life as Crispin takes the case of checking on whether a merchant's wife is being unfaithful. Murder soon follows with Crispin right in the middle of the action. ( )

(#15 in the 2009 Book Challenge)

This feels like a typical series mystery. I like the premise -- a Middle Ages setting that is more rough and tumble than it is twee. It was maybe a little ham-handed on this point, there were a few times where it turned almost comic. No one actually said "Prithee, I will kick thine ass!" but you got the definite feeling the characters were thinking it. Our detective (not called that of course) is a former knight who got demoted and lost all his property and social standing, and is now knocking around London feeling sorry for himself. He gets entangled with a merchant who has come into possession of a holy relic that is being sought after by a shady cartel from the Continent.

Grade: B-
Recommended: Probably good beach reading, the kind of book that mystery fans can rip through quickly without too much effort or ill effect. ( )

I enjoyed this book; and, although I wouldn't recommend it to everybody; I certainly would recommend it to those who are interested in this time period or in a mystery. It's not incredibly violent or bloody and I found myself really liking the protagonist, Crispin and his sidekick, Jack. The book itself is not very long and it's an easy read. I finished this book about 2 months ago, and the characters have stuck with me. And, yes, I definitely will be reading the next Crispin Guest adventure when it comes out. ( )

A well told tale of Crispin Guest, an ex-knight in 14th century London who is known as the tracker. Crispin is a medieval private investigator who, supported by his young would-be squire Jack, starts out on an investigation of the extra-marital activities of a wealthy merchant's young wife but are soon caught up in a murder, a search for a holy relic and a plot to undermine the King.
An enjoyable read that gained my interest from the start and held it throughout. I'm looking forward to the next installment of Crispin Guest's adventures. ( )

This is her first novel and she is calling it "medieval noir". I gotta tell you, it's a good description. I love the Sam Spade genre of detective novels (about 1/3 of my collection is of that ilk). Combine it with my love of the medieval (about another 1/3 of my mystery collection) and I'm in seventh heaven. She did quite well at capturing the spirit of both the genre and the setting. She also did well at tossing us into the life of the main character without it seeming to have been introductory. I am definitely looking forward to her second in the series. ( )

"A great read, through and through.  Westerson's finely wrought portrait of gritty Medieval London is embued with great wit and poignancy.  Crispin Guest is a knight to remember." -- Cornelia Read, author of A Field of Darkness, on Veil of Lies.

Crispin Guest is a disgraced knight, stripped of his rank and his honor - but left with his life - for plotting against Richard II.  Having lost his bethrothed, his friends, his patrons and his position in society.  With no trade to support him and no family willing to acknowledge him, Crispin has turned to the one thing he still has - his wits - to scrape a living together on the mean streets of London.  In 1383, Guest is called to the compound of a merchant - a reclusive mercer who suspects that his wife is being unfaithful and wants Guest to look into the matter.  Not wishing to sully himself in such disgraceful, dishonorable business but in dire need of money, Guest agrees and discovers that the wife is indeed up to something, presumably nothing good.  But when he comes to inform his client, he is found dead - murdered in a sealed room, locked from the inside.  Now Guest has come to the unwanted attention of the Lord Sheriff of London and most recent client was murdered while he was working for him.  And everything seems to turn on a  religious relic - a veil reported to have wiped the brow of Christ - that is now missing.
