I see that you include a Steinbeck on your list as I have. Cannery Row could have been on my list as Tortilla Flat or To A God Unknown. I choose the one I did for the epic scoop of the retelling of the Cain and Abel story, and the Idea of "timshel" (choice). ... unless they were pointed out to us and even then a lot of us don't "get it".

Today I am reading another John Steinbeck. This time it is To a God Unknown. Very good so far but I am only about 40 pages in. Finished Looking After Pigeon by Maud Carol Markson last night. Another ARC/ER, so I need to get that review up there sometime today or tomorrow.

The exception is Doc, and I think that there are a few he admires, such as the protagonist of To a God Unknown, which is a chilling book. Clearly he thinks highly of the Communist labor organizers of the 30s, but in the earlier works, they just don't seem real, but ... ... a bit and really got me thinking

Finished John Steinbeck's To a God Unknown last night and then started Cormac McCarthy's The Road this morning. If anyone is familiar with both books, it's a little bit of an eerie transition. To a God Unknown was my first John Steinbeck. I'm still processing it. It was formal and slow, ... Same lyrical prose describing the land he obviously loved but from the first page on, a sense of impending doom, even of horror lies over the book. Makes Stephen King look like a neophyte.
