2764 Nixon: The Education of a Politician 1913-1962, by Stephen E. Ambrose (read 8 Jul 1995) This is really an excellent volume, telling much we did not know. Nixon had a good record at Duke Law School, living even more frugally than I did in law school! Ambrose indicates that he was always against Nixon during the years he was active politically, but the book is very fair, and Nixon comes out the very uneven man he was: great skills and great flaws. I found this eminently worth reading, even if it rehashes much familiar territory. ( )

From acclaimed biographer Stephen E. Ambrose comes the life of one of the most elusive and intriguing American political figures, Richard M. Nixon. From his difficult boyhood and earnest youth to bis ruthless political campaigns for Congress and Senate to his defeats in '60 and '62, Nixon emerges life-size in all his complexity. Ambrose charts the peaks and valleys of Nixon's first fifty years -- his critical support as a freshman congressman of the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan; his involvement in the House Committee on Un-American Activities; his aggressive pursuit of Alger Hiss; his ambivalent relationship with Eisenhower; and more.
