I'm reading A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick. It's not quite what I expected, somehow, and I keep thinking that what it's doing feels like it shouldn't work, but there's just something about Goolrick's writing that captures the bleak, isolated, messed-up feeling of his characters and setting ...

#11 I just finished A Reliable Wife for Wisconsin, and wasn't crazy about it. The book was very dark - lots of people seemed to think highly of it judging from the reviews that have been posted, but it didn't work for me.

A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick. Wisconsin While I wasn't crazy about the book (entirely too tragic for my tastes - but most reviews were positive, so don't take my word for it), it IS set primarily in northern Wisconsin. This is the story about a middle-aged widower, very wealthy and ...

... several of your latest reads to my TBR. Your review of The Cellist of Sarajevo made me bump it up on the TBR list, and A Reliable Wife is definitely on the list. Thanks!

I finished A Reliable Wife - I really can't recommend it, sadly. I hate when I splurge on a new release hardcover and am disappointed.

A Reliable Wife was Robert Goolrick's second book, but his first was a memoir, so this is his first novel. It was outstanding.

I finished A Reliable Wife just to find out what happened, but after the first 100 pages, it went downhill and sort of fell apart for me.

I'm reading A Reliable Wife which really isn't doing it for me - it is pretty short but I am moving at a snail's pace -- which is sad because I so want to start my early reviewer book The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon hich finally came yesterday.

Hello everyone. Glad to see lots of Canadian booklovers here! I just finished reading A Reliable Wife and was pleasantly surprised by this very dark, very sumptuous tale of desire and moral disarray. On to By Chance by Martin Corrick next. It's promising but has a lot of exclamation marks.

Very nice review of A Reliable Wife. I can't resist a book that's got a 5 star rating, so I'm adding it to the TBR pile.

Just found, and starred, your thread. I've been reading a lot about A Reliable Wife lately, so looking forward to reading it. I usually don't want to know too much about a book before I read it, but I can tell that was a mistake with The Alchemist. After reading your review, I realize that ...

I just gave up on A Reliable Wife last week. It should be called "When Sociopaths Collide".

I'm about midway through A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick and, so far, it is crackling. I hear it disappoints eventually, but the first half is so good that I'd be surprised if I didn't find it has merit just for that alone.

A Reliable Wife, by Robert Goolrick. Seriously, how do I get so lucky?

Given the number of requesters, I didn't think I stood a chance to snag A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick. I'm so surprised (and pleased!).

Started Farthing by Jo Walton and I just keep putting it back down. No fault of the book, I'm distracted. Reading A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick on the Kindle at the gym too. So far, it is cracking good, but I hear it fizzles out.

1907 Wisconsin with A Reliable Wife. Put my stakes in for it on April's ER but looking at the odds of being selected for that one, I just decided to pick it up at the bookstore today when I saw it on the shelf!

#174 enaid: I thought the first hundred pages or so of Goolrick's A Reliable Wife were pretty terrific, but it sort of fizzled out soon after that, and had to slog my way through to the end, a total disappointment.
