I remember this book being surprisingly funny in places and definitely unusual. It was interesting. Keith, the darts player, was a memorable character. ( )

Here is a monster novel written in a fetid sweat of genius. It vies alongside Money at being Amis' greatest tour-de-force. Gritty, grimy and uncomfortable - it's like finding yourself suddenly transported inside the skin of a character in a Pinter play. Frantically, you grab at your former self, but too late - you're trapped. Permanently at the edge of violence, frighteningly at the mercy of relentless tumbling events and forced to take part in the dirtiest of practises. You may leave London Fields feeling exhilarated but you won't leave it feeling clean. And boy can Amis turn a sentence - in the same way that Nabakov turns a word.

This is one of those novels you either love or hate. I loved it; it seemed so fresh and different. Its very self-conscious but for me the author gets away with it due to the wit. Much better than The Information, which i read afterwards with excitement and then couldn't finish. ( )

Well, wasn't sure what to expect as had never read one of his books before. His style was a little alienating at first, but the characters drew you in. Dated now a bit with some of the references, but worth a read. Am looking forward to reading more of his. ( )
