Civil War
Jews in the Civil War ( )

All other nights is a fictional account woven into an historically accurate time period. Good, if you like historical novels. A nicely woven story of love, war, espionage, and forgiveness. ( )

This book grabbed me from the very first sentence. I love when authors can do that! I made the mistake of judging this book after a quick glance at the cover and thought it would be about President Lincoln. It is not. It tells the story of a young man who joins the Union Army during the American Civil War and accepts missions given to him by the Union Secret Service. Later he must deal with his guilt, as he has affected many lives and struggles to atone. The story rolls along quickly, with many twists and surprises, until the very last page. I highly recommend it and am eager to read more by Dara Horn. ( )

I really liked this. The poor hero's life got so complicated, I felt bad for him. I didn't much like his wife and her contortions. ( )

Loved the set up -- a young Jewish man from NYC enlists in the Union Army in order to flee a creepy arranged marriage, and is recruited to serve as a spy within the Confederate Jewish community.

Loved the basic theme -- can we change the course of our own lives once we have set out on a certain path, or do critical decisions and actions bind us to a particular track?

A little impatient with some of the execution. Too much expository dialogue (hello, I have just met you, let me tell you a long story for no particular reason about a situation that will become very relevant to you). There was a forced quirkiness that didn't work for me. I think it was supposed lend a capricious tone to the events as they unfolded, but it didn't feel true nor did it seem so absurd as to be intriguing or mysterious.

Grade: B+
Recommended: Historical fiction readers should enjoy this particular twist on the Civil War setting. ( )

Descrição do livro

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0393064921, Hardcover)

A gripping epic about the great moral struggles of the Civil War. How is tonight different from all other nights? For Jacob Rappaport, a Jewish soldier in the Union army, it is a question his commanders have answered for him: on Passover in 1862 he is ordered to murder his own uncle, who is plotting to assassinate President Lincoln.

After that night, will Jacob ever speak for himself? The answer comes when his commanders send him on another mission—this time not to murder a spy but to marry one.

A page-turner rich with romance and the history of America (North and South), this is a book only Dara Horn could have written. Full of insight and surprise, layered with meaning, it is a brilliant parable of the moral divide that still haunts us: between those who value family first and those dedicated, at any cost, to social and racial justice for all.
