Don't expect great literature or stellar writing -- but as historic Americana Horatio Alger's books have interest. From rags to riches is a classic American narrative and Alger perfected the theme.

Ben Bruce, like all of Alger's young characters, is penniless, but smart, honest, industrious, kind, and preternaturally lucky. He goes through a series of wildly improbable adventures and finds himself at the end with all his heart's desires. Good as wish fulfillment, but a little Alger goes a long way. ( )
